SUPER Sharp Swiss Army Knife: SERRATED Spartan!

  • I bought 2 (hard to find) Victorinox SERRATED Spartan SAKs (Swiss Army Knives), not to be confused with their plain old Spartan (straight-edged blade), just to get their rare, 91mm SERRATED blades for a future project. I suspected they'd be great, and guess what? THEY ARE! WOO HOO! I demonstrate the impressive cutting ability in this video. NOTE: Be careful when ordering these because search engines will often lead you to the NON-serrated Spartan and you might accidentally order that wrong one.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  2 года назад +2

      They are hard to find here. In some countries they go by the name "Weekender". You'd prefer the discontinued McKinley, I think. It comes with the Philips instead of corkscrew, but they'll be extremely hard to find new at a reasonable price. Popping on Plus scales to one should be fairly easy though, to make it as you want. :www.smartknives.com/Victorinox-Standard-Knives/McKinley.htm Note: my link is NOT an endorsement. I have never done business with them. It was just what popped up in a quick search. Good luck.

    As a SAK owner you just know to never put your fingers where your tools close... I have a Huntsman and the saw is crazy sharp as well. The tooth can easily dig into your hand hand and the worst possible scenario would be pulling your hand away when a tool closes on your hand. I sharpen/strop my knife from time to time, it can shave and pop hairs. Cut myself a lot but never when closing the blade.

I have one of these and love it, and had one sitting in my online shopping cart forever because I might use one for mods someday (this, with the scissors, nail file hook, and plus scales of a Compact, would be the only 3-layer SAK I'd EDC). Thanks, but I'm not good at sharpening so you don't want to learn from me! One good thing about serrated knives though is they act like saws and here much of the cutting power comes from the points of the teeth rather than the area between the points. These don't dull as quickly, I believe. No more slicing paper easily once dull though, because that DOES use the area between the teeth points.

    I just ordered one. I wish they could make a combo serrated blade, but with the serrations up by the tip, instead of at the base as combo edges usually are. I have one that’s in one of their pliers models, but I would like to see it on a traditional knife like this. There’s a guy I bought a few Frankenstein knives from on Instagram a few years ago. I lave one he made with a Spyderco blade with the hole in it that allows one hand deployment. I also bought a few off him where he etched all the tools on a Leatherman Juice and replaced the scales in copper. It has a steampunk/dystopian look to it. And he added a pocket clip.

    • @5-stringslinger149
      @5-stringslinger149 Год назад

      The typical one-handed Trekker model has top serrations and a bottom chisel type blade. Majority of the blade is serrated and has a circular one handed opening area. I own it and it’s one of my favorite SAKS for outdoors. The serrations are similar, but not identical. This trekker model is also a 111mm SAK. You may be surprised what the Victorinox service dept will accommodate for you as well. Their turn around time is usually 3-4 weeks, but they do a fantastic job. I just received 3 saks in return today and it was all under their warranty. They changed out certain tool implements that were worn or chipped/damaged and even let me choose what color of scales I wanted. Very impressed with their warranty service. Just some thoughts. Good luck! Cheers!

      If the word "serrated" does not appear in the title then the product is most likely the normal (straight edged) Spartan. In some regions (EU?) this knife is called "Weekender".

    Hi,
    First, let me say that I always enjoy your videos.
    I wasn't aware of the Spartan serrated, and of course, after seeing this video, I had to get one :) It's extremely sharp indeed!
    Seeing all your mod videos made me want to try to make my own SAK with the tools that fit me the best. I have never taken apart a SAK (I tried to watch a few videos), so might end up wrecking everything, but still, I would like to give it a shot.
    Since you have so many SAK and made so many mods, I thought you would be the right person to ask.
    Do you know if the tools from an Evolution would fit in a 91mm frame?
    Is the 91mm spring compatible with the Evolution tools shape?
    Basically, what I would like to attempt to make is:
    Start from the Explorer
    Replace the large blade with the serrated blade from the Spartan
    Replace the magnifying glass for which I have no use with the nut wrench found on the Evo S557
    Do you think this should work?
    Thanks in advance.
    PS: I would love to see a video from you where you show step by step how to dismantle a SAK and how to assemble it back afterwards. I could find a few videos that show drilling the brass pins, but none that show how to put the SAK back together and what to do to pin the 2.5mm brass rod, so I'm not really sure how to do that.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  2 года назад +2

      Thanks. Sorry but I'm in the same camp as you. Knowing what will fit, especially when switching tools between different lengths (84, 85, 91mm, etc.) is sketchy and not for the faint of heart. Trial and error is my main methodology for figuring that out and I've never worked on the ones you mention. Good luck though!

    All Victorinox knives are sharp out of the box however serrated edge blades are only suitable for kitchen chores like cutting bread, cake & other food preparation and are actually a hindrance for general cutting tasks such as cutting boxes, paper, string, rope, paracord, nylon sheeting & tubes, all woodworking tasks including carving & whittling and precision cutting of any kind on any material and last of all and this is very important they cannot be resharpened easily by the average Joe & need professional knife sharpening. I have the 111mm Alpiner grip one handed opener & its only useful as a kitchen knife & useless for EDC

      It's just a point and shoot camera and its AGC circuit is the issue. Since the cam's mic is just inches away from those snaps they seem really loud to it so it cranks down the rec. level. gain making my voice faint for a moment. Since I don't experience it myself during filming it's hard to monitor.
