- Piercing has the potential to be a very healing and empowering experience if we allow it to be. Part of how we do that is by incorporating trauma-informed care practices into our work as piercers to create safe spaces for clients to access the healing and catharsis that piercing can provide. But what does it mean to be a trauma-informed piercer? How exactly do we apply these concepts? Let's talk about it.

It's not just SA or DV that can cause trauma.... There's a bunch of medical trauma as well, everything from accidents to cancer to chronic illness to pregnancy loss and everything in between. Unexpected deaths of loved ones can be traumatic as well. Doing body modifications is so much more than just poking someone with a sharp object to change the physical appearance of an area, it can be a very emotional journey for the client and the professional.
Thank you for putting this video together to help bring this topic to more people, both clients and professionals alike. I personally haven't had a new piercing in about 20 years, it's so refreshing to see how things have evolved for the better and it's giving me a renewed desire to get new holes in my body for my upcoming milestone birthday! 😊
I was...essentially tortured by my dentist as a child. They PHYSICALLY HELD me down and I felt 100% of what they did. You can imagine the state of my freaking mouth now. It's bad.
I’ll start out saying I’ve been very lucky in choosing tattoo artists I feel quite comfortable safe with.
I’ve noticed that I really like when my tattoo artists brace on me firmly/hold me steady while tattooing (I had one artist who (after checking I was okay with it) basically laid the upper half of her body on me to get the best angle). I appreciate that firm touch tends to be less ticklish, and I feel very comforted (I suspect similar to the comfort of a weighted blanket) by the weight/firmness/feeling of being held down in a safe, consensual way. But I was thinking recently that there are other folks who would probably hate that feeling of being held down. I like to remind myself how different everyone’s experiences can be.
I literally got chills because I got my first tattoo months ago and I guess I have ptsd and I was having a trauma responce and the artist literally was like "i cant sit here with you all day" it was a walk in... meaning he probably did not have appointments after so idk what the hurry was and to this day ive gaslit myself into think I wasnt cut out for tattoos because I have ptsd, wow
A lot of people get into body modification as a way of reclaiming their bodies after trauma- the only people who aren’t cut out for tattoos either don’t want them or have some medical contraindications. ♥️ Don’t let them stop you from getting more if you want them, sounds like a d-bag who doesn’t need to be informing anything.
i think many professions should be more trauma informed, love this video!! hell not even professions, just as a human it’s nice to be able to support victims!
For real!! Having a trauma-informed dental hygienist was a game changer for me.
@@antumbra5616omg I’ve never thought about it before but that makes so much sense, because dental work is an incredibly intimate experience. I’m glad that you have someone that makes you feel safe ❤
Thank you for this video and providing more information and education on this topic.
Oooh I didn't know you added more to the media list! Time to order Trauma & Recovery from the library! Thanks :)
@@Juno_What I update it somewhat often with new books and media as I find them! Trauma and recovery is amazing and genuinely life changing tbh
@@Lynn_Loheide can't wait to read it then :)
i've seen so many people who work with body mods saying they're trauma informed, kept wondering what makes someone actually trauma informed? just to be informed? that's nowhere near enough to be brought up no?
