- Please watch in high-quality -- it looks and sounds a lot better.
When I was a kid (seems like much too long ago) I used to listen to a tape of Wendy Bagwell and The Sunliters, a gospel group. I listened mostly for the funny stories that Wendy would tell, which always made me smile. When I came across some of the stories, I really felt the need to pass along the light hearted and clean humor that put me to sleep with a smile so many years ago.
There isn't much visual to this video, it is mainly here for the audio - the pictures are only there to keep you from having to look at a blank image the whole time :)
First time I ever heard this- or any other Wendy Bagwell story- I was about 8 or 9 yrs old (mid-1960's) & I had a 9-volt transistor radio that I would put under my pillow at bedtime & lay awake till midnight when Bill Mack's "All Night Open Road Truckin' Show" came on on WBAP-820. One night he had Wendy & the girls as in-studio guests & opened the show with this recording.
I laughed all night long.
Reminds me of my transistor radio and earphone in bed nights listening to the Charlie Douglas Road Gang show on WWL 870 AM. That is where I was first introduced to Wendy Bagwell, Jerry Clower, and Justin Wilson. Heck, I even remember hearing Bob Newhart's comedy on that show.
@@BeingRomans829edBill Mack & Jerry Clower did a lot of work together. They had a Christian themed radio show "Country Crossroads" together for many years.
That’s where I heard it too. I was a kid in the 60’s like you, but I had never heard this story until sometime in 1992 coming home from work on the night shift. I laughed a good bit of the way home several times as old Bill played it over and over for a while. He also played a Foster Brooks Coast Guard boating safety spot that was hilarious too.
I remember the first time I heard this. I had never laughed so much in my life. Wendy is one of the funniest storytellers ever. Right up there with Red Skelton.
Red Skelton & Wendy Bagwell were the sort of comedians who could make you laugh without a cuss word to be heard.
I never even saw one of those Volkswagen cars before we went all the way to Jacksonville, Florida. THIS IS CLASSIC! ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES.
I had this on an audio cassette . My grandma tuned me into listening to Wendy . Our local gospel station used to run his stories .
yeah it does i saw wendy in winston salem,n.c. when i was 5 yrs. old.i was born with open spine.& by the grace of God could walk,he picked me up at intermission,"he was at sales table,he said,God has a reason 4 you.,it took me 30more yrs. too know, why i can get around, but that's another miracle from God.take care & God bless you ALL.
I can remember, as a kid, sitting in my basement with daddy's record player and listening to this. It bring back so man memories, thank you for adding this.
I, too, had this on a cassette tape about 40 years ago, as a teenager. I could pretty much tell the story word for word from listening to it and telling it so much. This is almost identical to the one I had but I am almost sure that in the one I had, the wife said "that heater will run you outa there!" instead of "why didn't you have the heater on!" Boy, that's a detail but tells you how well I knew this great story!
I still have the 78 of this album. in fact a couple more of Wendy's albums. love them all
Thanks for posting this. I listened to this a few years back?? and this just brings up memories of the times when my kids were still small. Loved the radio back then sorry to say most if it now is all the same no matter where you go. Time to go spend time with the grandkids, gee they sure grow fast! Bless all of you and God Bless America.
I Listen to Wendy Back in the 60s on am radio Great Comedy ,what

thank you very much for this ive put in my favorites...R.I.P. WENDY,he tells me,Gods got a sence of humor...God bless you & yours....
One of the funniest stories I have ever heard.
My parents had this on a 8-track tape. One of the funniest stories I've ever heard. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
And not one cuss word to be heard.
8 track huh? I forgot how we used to find our way home by following the tape stretched down the shoulder of the highway. Early GPS.
Brings back such great memories as a kid listening to this with mom, dad, grandpa and grandma.
I remember hearing this as a kid. I actually saw Wendy in person at Wilkesboro NC, my hometown. He was absolutely awesome.
This brings back many memories of listening to this on vinyl in the mid 70's. He was a funny guy! R.I.P. Wendy!
Thanks for putting this up I loved wendy's stories!
Never get tired of Wendy Bagwell
I first heard this about ten years ago when I lived in Tallahassee. As an old VW Bus owner (40 years ago), I have to say this is one of the funniest things I have ever heard.
He and his group would play at the annual "Sundown to Sunup" gospel event in Springdale, AR back in the mid- to late-seventies. It was in the summer and would start Friday and Saturday nights (all night events). There were other big name groups there too (The Blackwood Brothers comes to mind). Lots of good memories, music, stories and overall well-behaved crowd. Thanks for posting this and triggering those memories.
oh my! I was thinking of this Wendy Bagwell the other day...this is SO funny. Thanks for posting.
I hadn't heard this in over 20 years Thank you

Used to hear Wendy's stories on 870 WWL with Dave Nemo back in the Big 80's......
Thanks for posting this. This was the most requested "cut" from my days in AM Country Radio.
"There also ain't no reverse. There also ain't no radiator. There also ain't no heater and I'm glad we won the war" LOL LOL LOL My parents were huge fans of Wendy Bagwell and I remember listening to this when I was a kid :-)
Thanks for posting that -- I love his stories. I have most of their records, including this one, but my stereo is on the fritz, so it's nice to be able to hear this again.
Thank you SO much for posting this. I heard this about 20 years ago on a bluegrass segment on the radio. I've been searching for it ever since. Sooo funny!
While my dad could have bought a new car at anytime, his FIRST NEW CAR was the VW. I remember when he drove it home...and being appalled that he thought a family of six could sit comfortably in that little 'bug'. We were all ecstatic when he bought our mother a VW van for Christmas. We took many family trips on that van, and we all learned to drive on the 'bug'...but not until we first proved our skills on the family farm tractor. Then Dad knew we were road worthy and safe.
Love your story Mama Kaye. I made sure my baby and only daughter after 6 boys that she was gonna learn on a manual stick transmission. Also she had to learn on a car and the big dodge truck! Well she is now on her own and proud that she can drive most any car or truck unlike a lot of the young men she knows! Had her on a horse when she was 3. To bad the old farm house was lost to a Hawaiian Lava flow in June 2018. She was supposed to get that house and acre for herself. The boys had the pasture/field. Also lost.
I love it! With my hand up!
been yrs. since i heard this, thank you very much for posting,God bless u & urs.
I have been looking for this clip since 1976, great!
From an ole country boy, this is priceless!!!!!!
Love this story...
I love to hear wendy talk about those stories
He was very sincere, too. I do miss him. He's telling stories around Glory, though.
I first heard this on WPTF out of Raleigh, NC. It was the Summer of 1975 and I was 10. I had no idea one day I would live in Smyrna, GA.
Thank you for posting this I so love him :-)
Thanks for Sharing these videos.
I remember hearing this one when I was in the navy driving from the navy yard in Charleston S C to Jacksonville Fla.
My ship USS Mahan DDG 42 was homeported out of Charleston.I was assigned there from 1985-88.
I remember hearing this when I was young man on WBAP 820 AM radio station.
That's where I first heard it too. On the Bill Mack show.
Looking since Bill played it
If you've ever driven an original Beetle, this story is HILARIOUS! If you haven't, this story makes no sense.
I remember playing this, as a dj, on WGTT am 1500 in Alabaster, Alabama.
I live near Alabaster, where was WGTT located?
@@quacksackerthegreatstarfir6996 Industrial Road. Right behind railroad tracks off highway 31
This was from 1975, I believe.......My freshman year of High School. Brings back memories.
Loved it, thanks
love to listen to Wendy
I like the one about when he went to the snake handling service.
Love Wendy Bagwell
In 1971 on a cold winter day i was at work and it snowed. By the time i got off work it was so deep people was not able to drive
I was having problems too
Cars in the ditch and snow coming down. Very bad.
I looked and here came a guy in a Volkswagen. He zoomed by with no problem and was gone
Also a man i knew said they got 50 miles per gallon
Boy, I miss his stories, the German Police Dogs has to be one of his best though!
With my hand in the air!
Lol I've heard this story a lot on the old paths radio
The peoples car. We all loved them.
LMAO First heard this back in the early 70's on the mighty 1090 KAAY in Little Rock on Beaker Street
Heard this on The Truckin' Bozo show when I was a kid. R.I.P. Bozo and Wendy.
I can remember a 1962 VW. cost was $1600.00. the AM radio was optional!!!!!!
This must have been before VW added the rear window defroster grid, complete with a toggle switch hiding, completely unmarked, underneath the dashboard, behind the ashtray.
This Goes out to all of The New F-150 pick up truck buyers.
1st car a 61 foldback top! This is for real. ..
VW Beatles were the best!!!!!
VW has come a long way....just recently being named the #1 car seller in the world. Das ist aber schone!
Jay G did you have Spina Bifida?
I thought the punchline to Miss Mary Ellen's assessment of the car was"Boy,that little heater'll run you outta there, won't it?"
😂👍
They also served as an effective means of contraception.
tooooooooo funny!!!!!!
Now THAT'S a fact!!!!!!
I once owned a 1957 Chevy car my first car in 1969 I knew where the gas cap was
But anyone who never saw one didn't know
I got a kick out of watching people esp girls try to find it
LOL soooo Hillarous story!
I have owned many of these beetles over the years and I actually sold one to a guy who called me two days later and asked me if it had a reverse gear?
he recorded the story twice on the second version it was
My guess is Volkswagen cars like that had only am radio. I don't know why Wendy didn't say anything about that....
radio was an option
IT WAS FUNNY .BUT IF YOU EVER OWNED A V. W.. CAR .IT WAS NO FUN TRYING TO GET IT INTO REVERSE
Aww, it was easy! Once you knew where it was.........
@@flyboy2610 I think they kept reverse in the trunk...with the heat and the engine. 😂
It might have been in 1981 where I live and Wendy and his group sang
I laughed
One thing he said was it was a Jesus name church
I went to a Jesus name church
Jesus name only means acts2.38 and the bible church of Jesus Christ
After that people often ask me if we handled rattlesnakes
I answered
'Only with a shotgun'
ain't got no engine up in here.
funny funny funny
it's on
True fact..... Volkwagens were originally designed in the 1930s by Ferdinand Porche. Yeah, THAT Porche!!!! That's the reason some people call Porches "Volkswagens on steroids".
Ok. I’m jealous with regards to my cousin’s closest friend. He’s actually been alone forever. Then again, he made a part-time model to state to him she loves him in less than a month. How is that manageable? He said to me he used the Cupid Love System (Google it!) I wish someone stunning fell for me… I really don’t recall ever previously seeing him so fulfilled. Kinda makes me feel bad.
Ioan Gerosaby
me either
I'm sure it wasn't intended to be offensive. What's wrong with taking a joke as a joke?
my names Michael Chase bagwell
I love the snake song better but I can't let 2 of my cousins listen too it
Paul Russell why
Fact. xozone
You know, this kind of “dad gum”, “aw shucks” storytelling is so outdated. I grew up in a southern state and almost all my teachers were southerners. My 1st 2 cars were a ‘56 V dub and a ‘58 V dub. Dumbing down these stories just further stereotypes a big group of people.
Zzzzzz. Grumble grumble Zzzzzzzz.
I grew up in VWs- the new Beetles can't compare to the old ones- suckers would go anywhere a Jeep would.
