    I actually agree with Mr. Toyoda. With the same amount of lithium battery, you can build 1 BEV or 10+ plug-in hybrids. And for most people, their plug-iin hybrid can run on full EV mode 90%+ of the time. And no range anxiety or long charging breaks on long trips.

      Range isn't the isuue with BEV-s. It's the long charging time which is the real problem! That's why BEV companies glance over it and talk about range and acceleration instead!

    • @nderezic
      @nderezic Год назад +15

      @@aymanhawari2589yeah but in 15min BEVs get maybe 200km of additional range if the battery is totally discharged. You get much much much less of extra range if the bat is at over 50%. To charger from 0-100% it will take you about 45min and that's providing you find a fast charger which is available. As for charging at home, this only works if you live in a house and even then it takes over 11h to charge 0-100% on a standard home charger. You're out of luck if you live in a apartment building and are forced to park in a public parking. These are figures for Tesla 3 Long Range. Look it up. Filling up a normal car takes about 3 seconds per liter, which for a 50 L tank results in 2.5 minute of 0-100% refueling time. Since refueling is so fast waiting in line is not really an issue. So yeah ... range is not an issue - it's the charging time which is the problem with BEVs.

    Toyota isn't falling behind on EV R&D from what I've seen (quite the opposite - it has been a key research area within the company for at least a decade). They're merely taking the practical approach of "we won't stop producing goods that still have a clear market demand."

    • @urphakeandgey6308
      @urphakeandgey6308 Год назад +3

      It's exactly this. Anyone thinking Toyota will fall behind doesn't realize two things: First, they were one of the companies to push hybrid tech to where it is now and that's easily their strength. Hybrid is not too different from an EV. Second, they've been researching hydrogen powered cars like crazy and there's a small possibility that could still end up being the actual future of cars. (Especially since it isn't reliant on the electrical grid, which is notoriously not very eco-friendly.)
      So anyone saying Toyota will fall behind simply isn't informed on the amount of R&D Toyota has been hard at work over. Plus the fact that hybrid tech can easily be turned into EV tech. If EVs are the future, I'm confident they'll still be leagues ahead of most.

    Living in Japan, I have a different perspective that wasn't considered in your presentation and may also have much to do with Toyota's hesitance to go all electric. The vast majority of people in Japan live in the cities and most of them live in apartments with parking provided by their apartment and no way or plans to provide electric outlets for overnight charging which is the most common way to charge your car preparing for the next day. Most apartment complexes are controlled by a board of residents made up of people with time which consist of older people who are conservative in their opinions and slow to move into expensive technology such as charging stations in the community parking areas. If they do create charging stations, it will be only a few from what I've seen 2 or 3 places for a couple hundred cars.
    Japanese always look in before looking abroad and isn't going to create a bunch of vehicles that Japanese people have little interest in. That is why hybrid vehicles are so popular in Japan. Hybrid depends on gasoline to charge the batteries.

Commuters like myself only need 10-100 mi of range and could go battery only for a lot of that.

      It's actually similar here but the issue isn't being acknowledged. 27% of the homes in the United States are not single family homes and that percentage is increasing. My community will never install charging stations in all the parking spaces. They can't afford to do that. So, they're installing 2 stations for 458 homes. That's obviously not going to allow anyone to get an electric car.

Without his support and pressuring Subaru and BMW we would never have got the FR/BRZ/Supra. He came in to get Toyota back from being too safe and boring and become an exciting brand again. The Prius Hybrid did more to shift public openness to alternate powertrains than others IMO. Japan also has a unique situation being in the earthquake capital of the world and high-power demands from dense population centers and electric trains already providing most transit for the populous. They have a love/hate relationship with more Nuclear power being their only option in an electric anti-carbon world. Here is their other problem: A major earthquake takes out the power grid and auto-shuts down nuke plants for safety and all those electric cars become useless after they run out and things stop moving when time could be crucial to save lives. Then you are looking for diesel generators to charge cars because gas can be poured by hand from a can or hand crank pump or gravity siphon without electricity. The one size fits all silver bullet approach is unwise.

    All good points in this video. BEV's can be a great choice, for some people, under a specific set of circumstances: When the community you live in offers residential electric rates of no more than 12~14 cents kw-hr. When you live in a single family home where you can park the BEV in the garage or at least close enough to reach a 240 volt outlet in the garage with a 20 foot EV charge cable. When the community you live in has a winter climate that never gets colder than the low 40's. When you have a second, gas powered vehicle for making long road trips, and will never need to take your Bolt, Leaf, or Tesla more than 100 miles from home and thus have to worry about "range anxiety". When you will never need to tow a trailer with your BEV. Under almost any other circumstances, a regular Hybrid or PHEV, like the Prius, Prius Prime, Rav4 Hybrid/Prime, Camry Hybrid, or Corolla Hybrid, is probably a better choice. Comparing the BZ4X to the Rav4 Prime SE: They both cost $42,000. The Rav4 Prime can go 550 miles on a tank of gas, or (up to) 45 miles in EV mode. Never a worry about range anxiety, or whether the fast chargers along the way are all working, or all occupied when you get there. Take a road trip in a Rav4 Prime and you can get gasoline anywhere, same as you always have. Live somewhere like St. Paul, Minnesota, or Winnipeg, Manitoba? Where it can get down to 30 below zero and your 230 miles of range BZ4X will maybe make it 90 miles before the battery is kaput? No worries in a PHEV. The fuel economy will go down slightly in sub-zero temps, sure, but not in half, and you can still re-fill with gasoline in 5 minutes or less at any gas station. Live in an apartment complex with no way to charge a BEV at home? Then a regular Hybrid like a Prius will get you 55 mpg and you will never need to worry about charging it.
    Mr. Akio Toyoda has thought about these, and many other issues, and he well understands that his customers live all over the world, in vastly different circumstances. And even if everyone worldwide had a middle-class American/Canadian standard of living, it will take at least a few years to beef up electrical grids and charging infrastructure enough to support a massive shift from internal combustion engines to all battery electric. And there are STILL going to be tems of millions of people who live in sub-zero winter climate areas where battery electric vehicles are always going to face difficulties in providing adequate performance, range, and fast charging for 4 to 6 months every year.

      We could have vehicles powered by hydrogen derived from water right now. They have been around for years, but every major car company refuses to mass produce them. Hmmm I wonder why! Oh that's right, if you can power your car with water they can't control you and suck money out of you like they do for gas. I saw a car of this kind developed in Japan that could even run on bubble tea. It's really the water in the tea but still. Splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis should have been instituted ages ago. The interal combustion engine has been obsolete for nearly 100 years. Yet we are kept in a state of arrested development.

Toyota built its reputation from the grass roots and knows its market. Toyota will develope EVs, but they know that the Prius reputation wasn't built overnight, it was a long term strategy. The Toyota system requires a pipeline of suppliers to be certified to fully participate in the Toyota quality systen.
