I drove the 75 1.8 as a taxi driver, compared to my 1.8 Vectra at the time it was gutless. I used to be able to overtake no bother in my Vectra, but the 75 didn't give me confidence to get past someone! I had 2 75's prior to my current 75. The first was a 2.0 CDT,vthe second was a 2.5 v6. My current one is a 2.0 CDT. I tried the synergy 2 tuning chip in it I was happy as a pig in shit with the performance. I since took it out as I got points last year.
The reason the 'K' series engine is susceptible to head problems is that on the two production lines one of the machines was not set properly and mis-drilled one of the coolant holes incorrectly, this led to overheating and gasket issues. GET IT SKIMMED! Engines produced on the other line were virtually trouble free. (Used to work for Rover!)
@@daveabbott I had a 1.4 single cam Metro and that version of the K was great. Knocked spots off the Ford and Vauxhall competitors. Just a shame the body was so decrepit.
Well done both on another great video maybe as a precaution get the head skimmed to make sure you know it’s correct It’s giving a good canvas to build back from
I think that's the sign of being in a proper workshop you can't tell what tools are designed for the job and what the mechanic has fabricated themselves though necessity.
I did all that twice no change, the liners were within tolerance, in the end I bought a brand new old stock complete head, checked all waterways thermostat circulation, fitted new rails and bolts, latest head gasket. End result , complete waste of time and money as it still boiled up.
I will be very interested to see if this excellent work cures the problem. The K Series engine is an enigma. Everything your dad is doing is exactly right and with the new polymer gasket it ‘should’ cure the problem. I have read stuff about ‘thermal shock’ from the thermostat opening too quickly and the difference in coolant temperatures causing HGF. Thermostats being re located to somewhere else in the cooling system and many other mods. I have everything crossed for you guys!
That head needs to be skimmed and valves reseated or you Will Have issues again. It’s aluminium head and over heated once they will warp they are very temperamental
Your dad is a fantastic, talented old school mechanic! 😄That 75 is gonna run perfectly ! Are you taking it to Pride of Lonbridge? It's on the 13th of April.
@@JonCoupland It just seems a bit marginal with the head warping up a bit and some of the liners dropping a bit… but if the elastomer gasket can work with that then fair enough……
Piston slap on a car with under 60 thousand miles thats not good , seems Rover just made badly designed engines , the cars did drive well but engines were naff
Too small an engine for the body. Really should have bought a 2 litre or 2.5 litre. Hence why the engine sounds like a diesel. It is knocking it's guts out to carry the car and the occupants.

It must have been a Vectra B? I've got a Vectra C 1.8 (122) and it's very slow. Good on fuel though, and a much better engine than the K
Another very enjoyable video, guys ... Do you think you will ever get to Mablethorpe.... I'm starting have a keen interest for the place 😄.... 👌
Fingers crossed 🤞
A very big 👍 from me, you've got me hooked on getting a 75 now.
Thanks for watching
I utilise the flat glass out of an fridge to check for warped heads if its a pronounced wobble I get it skimmed. No special tools in my house 😂
That's a good idea though!!
or buy a big block of glass, glue sand paper to it and sand the head flat yourself

@@smithp573 Eventually! But not before the reputation of what, in theory, was a superb power-unit, was trashed.

Taking out the valves is a fiddly job 😮 slow and steady progress. Looking forward to the next video.😊
Coming soon 😁
Next episode. Jon visit the hospital to have his camera surgically removed from his backside, courtesy of Dad 😂😂
😂😂 gets like that sometimes in the workshop
Another quality episode both. “Yes mate” 👍
Many thanks for watching 😊
even broken the 75 is a beautiful car
Absolutely 😁

Many thanks 👍
Please don't lean on the jack handle while your dad is under the car.
Heart in mouth time
Good point! Thankfully under the car was also 4 axle stands 😂 but absolutely I understand your point
@@kevinthacker8349 axle stands doing their job 😄
Got to look after youre dad jon, I hope you are making him plenty of bacon butties

Borderline, that means in my book skim the head.
Stay tuned 😀

😂🤣 Your both horrible to that poor 75 . Anyway putting the collets back is my favourite job "not".

Not quite yet 🤣
hurry up valve removal tool lol
