For me I’d rather play and modify a Chibson rather than tearing into a valuable original. Chibson sounds great for the average person and the most bang for the buck.
Thanks for an honest review of the most controversial guitar in history. I don't support counterfeits but you just reinforced what I already knew - these guitars have a lot of potential if you know what you're doing.
lets hear what that chibson sounds like on a clean channel compared to a real LP, without distortion, gain or any effects. Any playable guitar with effects can be made to sound reasonable.
Had to do the same to my Chibson. Tuners, bridge, pups, Burns low friction pot. Just for bridge pup. and nut. I also had to address fret issues on mine. Just some leveling and dressing. I love mine!! Sure I'd like to have a Gibson, I'm not gonna spend that kinda cash.
Cool video David, the parts and the set up make the guitar. I built a few guitars with guitar kits I bougth from Thomann where I used spray cans and did some epoxy resin. They look cool and sound really nice, but when I want to let them sound great I have to do some upgrades. Have a great weekend Bert
Thanks Bert! Same here, have built a few kits but unless I throw a bunch of $$ into them they are never going to touch these pricey guitars. I picked up this chibson cause I got it as cheap as a kit without handing to do any finishing for a change :)
I enjoyed your video. I recently got my hands on a Chibson and I must’ve gotten lucky 😀 but after I upgraded the electronics I really like the sound and feel of it. Like I’ve heard many times if your happy with it that’s all that matters
Thanks for stopping by and that’s great to hear! Not all are made well that’s for sure, but if you get a decent one and with some upgrades you get yourself a pretty sweet guitar. 👍
Hi, pretty often the chibsons come with cheap pickups but occasionally you might get a decent sounding one. The pro buckers should sound better so you should be OK. 👍
Good pickups will def help the sound.. Most of them have trash electronics.. I bought one and it plays fantastic, but tuners were trash, pickups are microphonic.. ordered a roller bridge for mine from guitar fetish for $30... Its a gamble though, you want one that plays good, that is painted/crafted well. Then its worth spending the money... I used to believe in all the tone wood hype but after seeing guys build things to just hold the pickups, i became a believer that its allot of marketing hype. I do think the wood effects sustain though, but the pickups pickup the vibration and send it to the amp... A well crafted guitar is one that stays together physically and can be setup to play well, the neck should feel good to you.. then its worth spending money on.. if it doesnt feel right, id abort mission... Its rough because you have to order them so its the chibson lottery, i never buy guitars without playing them first until trying these chibbers.. I still want my heritage core but it will be staying at home :)
I bought a custom Chibson, swapped all hardware to Epiphone, Probuckers wiring set, bridge and stop tail. Tuners swapped to Gotohs. Costs were about 420 € all in all. Now i got a nice looking custom Les Paul which sounds like a high end Epiphone. I looove that guitar!
One thing I'm curious about is what type of replacement bridge is compatible? Are they Epiphone equivalents? AB-1? When I order mine, I'm going to order the upgrades as well and need to know exactly what I'll be needing. Thanks.
Hi! I went for a Gotoh bridge on mine, I'm not entirely sure if they all come with the exact same bridge sizes. I actually took the guitar into my local guitar parts store and made sure the bridge I chose fit perfectly,
@@DavidsMusicChannel I'm actually buying on Amazon and ebay, depending which comparable part is least expensive, so I don't have the luxury to "try before you buy." I just don't want to have to wait for the part and then find out it's incompatible and have to send it back and wait for a replacement.
Also, I had a 1973 Gibson SG I found in a Classified ad for about $450, which was stolen years later. It would cost me thousands today to find a replacement, so to make a long story short, I can get the "sense" of playing my ol' "Black Gold" SG again by buying a replica, without selling a kidney to do so.
That's so sad about your SG, that totally sucks! hope you can relive some memories by beefing up one of these copies, yes they are way too expensive to even consider any more unfortunately.. Thanks for sharing.
if yer lucky you'll receive a Chibson that really speaks to you. Mine is a combo tobacco / honey burst with light flaming. It's weight is rather light. and the D shape neck is really thin ? Frets were scratchy. Called my luthier and had him replace all the frets with SS, all the electronics Pot switches jack plug, pick ups ABR and Tail PC and bone nut. not tuners, he said they were fine ? $1000 can upgraded and very special. so glad. In for a Penny...
Nice.... Some ppl swear by Chibsons, others swear at them. Great video... Editing and a solid/fair comparison....you've upgraded that Chibson with high quality parts and it still isn't as good.... I'm sure the distance would have been further with it's original parts. The point is: you made it a "player" with a little TLC.... that's promising for those that don't want to pay for a Gibson.
Thanks DC! Maybe I should have been a little clearer, the body and neck still doesn’t look as good as the Gibson, playability and sound wise it is as good as the Gibby!
From what I see, with about a grand worth of upgrades and tons of labor the fake guitar became more expensive than the real guitar and the fake one is still a pos despite all the upgrades.
tbh a well setup chibson is really hard to beat in Price to performance ratio. Real Gibson are better no doubt. But is the thousand(s) of dollars price difference justified? Maybe. Until you remove the gibson brand.
With about a grand worth of upgrades and tons of labor, the fake one became more expensive than the real one yet the fake one sounds like a pos even with distortion. Needless to mention that the fake one has absolutely zero resale value while the real one has excellent resale value. Why bother to spend time and money to do the obvious. There are tons of videos about fake guitars.
Thanks for the feedback and it appears so. However there were two reasons for me; curiosity and i managed to source all the parts on the cheap. Sometimes the best way to come to ones decision is to experiment. I watched a lot of videos and wanted to see for myself. I enjoyed the process and laid down the facts so that people can make draw their own conclusions just like you have 😃 cheers 👍
Wood is wood. The electronics is what I feel makes the difference. I could be wrong but for a newbie who wants to learn guitar... come on.. i would take a chibson over an Epiphone any day
Yeah definitely agree and in this case with the Gibson pickups it sounded pretty close. having the better finish on the real deal did tip the scale for me but for the money, the Chibby was well worth it!
For me I’d rather play and modify a Chibson rather than tearing into a valuable original. Chibson sounds great for the average person and the most bang for the buck.

It works well especially if you can pull it off for much less$ like I did. Had a lot of parts lying around so the build was below budget in the end 😀

Kris Derrig and Slash resurrected Gibson with a fake copy. LMFAO
Totally! Although I think their copies were made with a lot more attention to detail.
but gibson says play authentic.. how about the resale value.. how about the woods? 😅
