Very interesting watching Jonne Koskis new video him talking about how he re-did the first workout specifically because the box step ups didn’t look good, shows that athletes can and should be checking these things
That masters athlete workout 03… the entire workout should be invalidated. He didn’t get a single Handstand pushup. There’s no 40%. It’s a 100% penalty.
Okay, NOW I get what you were trying to say with the last video. The standards are the standards, BUT CF has to find a way to make EVERYONE accountable, not just the top tier, or someone like Brad will make it to the games...and that is NOT GOOD.
Yes! Especially when elites are being penalized then dropping behind folks who's videos probably haven't been reviewed (and may look as lame as Brad). Super unfair.
I know full well that if I get asked for video review I'm fucked as I only did recordings to see my own rest times and shitpost on Instagram, must be plenty of folks in the same boat
if they knock you down to 600th place in a workout they need to review all the way down to 600th place. Otherwise theyre better off just asking the athlete for a re-do within 24hours.
If you get caught speeding on the highway do they need to check the speed of everyone else that was also speeding next to you? You get caught? You get caught.
I'd say at this stage of competition they only need to validate those making the cut to semifinals. So if they penalize someone in the top 40 or whatever and it knocks them out of that qualifying spot, whomever now moves into a qualifying spot needs to be verified. You cant verify every workout for like 80,000 athletes. As long as all athletes making it to semi's are checked, then its all good.
Oh I can promise you it’s in 45-49. I git hit with no-reps while doing QF because I have judges who hold me accountable. I adjusted mid-workout and continued on. This though, this is on some other shit.
4:35. Watch Justin mederios video (wod 1). Watch how he finishes his box step ups. Then watch pat. Its clear you CAN meet the standard and go fast. Just meet the standard.
Aaaaaaand WELCOME BACK!!! We know ya had a tough couple days but we all do sometimes my dude. Keep doing the same exact things you’ve been doing because IT IS NEEDED!!! 👊💯🔥🙏🏻
What I don’t agree with or honestly understand is how they can drop someone who submitted a video BELOW the people that didn’t. Makes it seem like Vellner would have had a better placement if he submitted a score that was maybe top 60. No one would have watched the video and he wouldn’t have dropped to in the thousands. If you penalize someone they should be ranked against only those that have submitted videos. It’s like how they handle rx workouts in the open vs scaled. 1 rep with a video should be better then 400 without
Or shit, not make it a money grab and not open it up to the top 25% and instead make it so only x amount of people make it where all videos are watched for all athletes
They at least need to be consistently checking every athlete who moves into the top 40. So as some fall out and new ones come in, they have to be checked and so on. Until the final WOD, leaves the top 40 all having been assessed and deemed fit to be there.
100% agree but he standards are what they are however, I do think it’s telling that if the multitude of athletes being penalized are committing the penalty on the same exact thing then a logical person can assume there was a disconnect between CF and the athletes. It’s the same as if if every student in a class missed the same exact question on a test. It doesn’t mean the teacher didn’t teach on that question but they probably could have done a much better job at it because clearly what they did didnt connect with the students.
Box step overs would change a lot. Also having 3 movements that will equal roughly the same amount of reps helps too - I can hit 30 cals in 60sec on the row but there's no way I can get near that on the snatches or box step ups. So then you start taking short cuts on those movements by not completely locking out at the top because you're desperate to squeeze out a few more reps, everyone knows what row pace they can hold but the other movements are grey areas. For the record I got 207 reps on 24.1 - I did 8 snatches in the first round then didn't touch another snatch after that and took 2mins rest each round. I went 30,30,28,29 on the row cals and 21,21,20,20 on the step ups.
Maybe it was because Boz was there. Maybe he watched her judge let her get away with no reps and then went back to hq and told them they need to clamp down on the standards.
I love the strict approach! It’s only going to make everyone better. And I understand you can’t judge every video in the open. But My issue is if you’re going to give someone a 20% (or any %) penalty to someone in a qualifying spot, then if they move from let’s say in the top 100 for that workout to outside the top 400 kicking them outside a qualifying spot you then need to judge the 400 people ahead of them in that workout. There could be 100+ other people doing the same no reps from 50th to 500th changing the result from getting moved from inside the top 10 or so to 60th+ and your year over, to getting moved from inside the top 10 to 30th and still qualifying?
Great video! Love it! 2 Thoughts: 1) when brands, sponsorships i.e. money gets involved, it becomes a really difficult and layered discussion. My opinion: the standard is the standard. 2) How "just / fair" is the standard when looking at what The Crossfit Games want to test? E.g. Does the head really need to be in line with the shoulders, hip, knees and ankles on top of a box step up? Does that really contribute to the test of (elite) fitness? In my humble opinion, that's the feedback that The Crossfit Games Team needs to take away from this, the question: "what standards do we need to impose for "assessing" elite fitness?" AND, to answer my own question: No. From a physics point of view: the head not being aligned with the other joints does NOT significantly contribute to doing work (force over distance) nor expressing power (which is work done i a certain amount of time). It doesn't significantly influence the body' s centre of gravity and doesn't influence the max displacement of the dumbells. Shoulders, hip and knees aligned, locked out knees and a straight back. That could be a suggestion for a standard.
Any chance at all CF will do the right thing and review every video above the athletes they knocked out of qualifying? Paige for example? The right thing is to review every video that placed ahead of her in event 1. Any chance at all? Can’t wait for their justification and explanation of all this.
I’ve never even considered doing a glide kip RMU 😂😂 but now I’m going to have to try it! Can’t say in all the 1000s of CF videos I’ve watched I’ve ever seen someone do one 😂
I agree. An exercise that has a lot of ways not to meet standards probably shouldn’t be an online one. Partially because camera angle can make it really hard to tell. Either simplify the standard, pick a better exercise or be extremely clear on items that will be looked at. Patrick probably isn’t thinking “I’m not going to extend my hips so I can cheat.” He probably doesn’t really notice going at that speed. Anyone who’s done a hard CrossFit workout knows your brain can’t even count reps so tracking perfect form would be hard
Looks like Brad is still sitting in 46th place in his age group. He's listed as 5th for workout 1, overall. That's nuts. Also, his judge happens to have the same last name as him. But I guess he has the capacity :).
I don’t have a problem with the box steps. I don’t think it’s a hard movement to preform to the standard or judge, or at least, I don’t think it’s harder to to ensure a person finishes the rep in a fully stacked position. Also, I tend to give hq slack for not achieving a perfect leaderboard. Brads submission is irrelevant to the games season. He won’t advance in the season, don’t waste resources reviewing submissions that don’t affect the leaderboard.
Man this is your best video so far man and it feels CF listened to your year long criticisms and finally starts to take mis-reppin’ seriously. It needs to expand though elsewise many competitions (on smaller skale) are just full of cheaters
Let's just agree, here and now, to stop with the charade that these "judges" are anything but rep counters. They're not judging anything. They're only counting reps.
Hiller! It's time for crossfit to separate into 2 different entities. CF Affiliates for the "community" and CF Games for the competitions and competitive season. And dana white can be CEO of CF Games and dave castro can be director of programming and sport. Then maybe cf can legitimize as a professional sport.
This is so damn frustrating. That guy is in my age group. First of all, I underperformed. Finished 385 and that’s on me. But you called me out on my hspu for wodapolooza. I cleaned up ALL my movements. Then you have guys like this. And how many other guys like this go unchecked?
I know I am late to the party, but the easiest way to take care of some problems. First and foremost......check every video to see that ALL MEASURMENTS ARE CLEARLY SHOWN. He's ahead of me. I'm on the cutline so he's keeping me out of semis. Thanks, Brad.
Update, I made it! But Heimer is still in 89th on the leaderboard.
That masters athlete workout 03… the entire workout should be invalidated. He didn’t get a single Handstand pushup. There’s no 40%. It’s a 100% penalty.

Yeah I LOLed every time
I got no rep for all my HSPU attempts so I could not move on but I could do them the way the guy in the video did . WTF sad.
My judge was spot on.
I’m in 45-49. Guarantee this is in my division too. Saw a horrible video at the top of 50-54. And this guy is keeping friends of mine out in 40-44.

Having friends and colleagues coach and cheer you is great but NOT judging you. To much slides by just being nice.
Those handstand push-ups were atrocious 😖

How does Paige Powers get docked when Boz is in the same room during her workout?
