I want that one that changes when you flip it over.
Cam Sutton 😂😂
Me too a different bass every day ;)
Lol Me too.
There is no fight whatsoever. You need both.
Every model of bass Fender has ever made.
Agree!
Could not agree more
You need 3
1) jazz bass
2) precision bass
3) modified precision PJ
I like the Dimension Bass, too...
Bass is the real winner here ;-)

@@DrKFC69 I'm a trumpet player too but nothing beats an organ or piano not even a Guitar.
Absolutely and 1000s of hit songs. Remember those things?
and the loser
Jazz Bass sounds amazing alone, but P bass sits so much better in the mix. For me PJ is the answer :)
Jaroslav Jančár i'd rather having a full P and a full Jazz than having a PJ
PJ just sounds wrong and should only be on cheap beginner basses
Bar Goldstein Something about opinion....
Ask Mr Wooten :-)
That's the most stupid comment I read on the internet for months. Like really? PJ is a very universal configuration and it is loved by many pros and studio engineers. I 100% sure, that you never tried something like a Sadowsky, Fodera, Sandberg, Spector and Fender higher stuff. And that's not just my opinion, it's straight facts, so what you just told is your stupid opinion, because again you have no clue what are you talking about.
aha :)
Definitely leaning towards the J just because I’m really fond of the way it sounds when slapping. I absolutely love its clear, bright sound with every slap, mute and pop!
BUT the way that P blends better with the mix and it’s deep, round sound it’s something to seriously appreciate.
Yes that's exactly how I feel. To me personally I get more joy out of playing a jazz, and digging in getting down with the music, but I cannot deny that sometimes I'm a bit jealous that the precision bass sometimes when played with a pick especially, sounds better in a band mix 👍🏼
I never get tired of watching this. Great bass playing, great music, great bass guitars, and phenomenal video editing.
clarity, brightness and articulation = jazz
muddiness, thickness and darkness = precision
Umm... darkness? Turns out I had already fallen to the dark side when I got my p bass.
The names are kind of counterintuitive
Kyo Kayne - not really, that has nothing to do with their names anyway... the Precision is called that because it was made for upright players (who are accustomed to fretless instruments) and the frets made playing and intonation much more precise.
Jazz can sound as the p or similar, p bass cant do that
@@juancruzvitelli8484 PJ bass
Personally I am a Jazz Bass type person. But in music there are places for both sounds.
Philipp Grünert ikr
Me too, I personally love jazz basses due to their tone.
@@samuelc2399 that's what I love about them is there tone and slap qualities
This comparison made me 100% certain that the only logical choice is to buy a P bass then sandwich the split humbucker between a pair of J bass pickups creating one bass to rule them all
Damn I want one like that now
Look up the stu hamm fender sig. you’ll dig, at least I think.
I get that you're probably not serious, but that doesn't actually work. The P-bass pickup occupies more or less the same point along the scale length as the Jazz Bass neck pickup. Harmonic position of the pickups along the scale length is VERY important in terms of tone. Like, a bridge position P-pickup sounds absolutely brutally hot and bright, while the mid-position sounds like we all have heard a billion times. If you put low-output Jazz-style pickups at the same points along the string length as a Rickenbacker, it makes VERY convincing Ric tones. That's more important than maybe any other single factor in solid body bass tone.
i had a sx jazz that had a j neck pup and humbucker bridge pup. it had it's own unique sound, more of a stronger, deeper jazz tone than a punchy deeper tone you'd normally get.
Bastard Mike Like a Music Man humbucker? J/MM is probably my favorite 2-pickup bass arrangement.
J for solo and P for the band~

Geddy Lee: *Hold my fire*
If you can't make a J cut through a mix and sound fantastic the problem isn't the bass. It may be the band, or it may be you.
@@DrKFC69 lol hold your fire
A simple convenient truth.
Exactly !
That slapping sound of Jazz Bass is so iconic
I have used both basses over the years, and I just favor the faster, tonal response of the jazz bass all the way around, but, both are top notch basses....
I dream of a full version of the Tone Off Track. Damn' so trippy and good.
best comparison video on youtube. Both sound great. but the best part is you made me realize the worth of the Jazz Bass I already own. Thank You!
That J-bass sound at 2:40 when tone is down, sounds so good!
Sounds like the same with the pbass
The track with Tone Off at 2:42 is amazing!
i made something similarly sounding stuff before, check it out if you'd like

Horog Péter sounds good man
I have had both a P Bass and J Bass at one time. When the time came to sell one for financial reasons, I kept the P Bass. In a band setting, it just sits so right. Im also a firm believer that if you can only have one bass, make it a P Bass.
Peavey T40
I have one Bass right now. And it's a Jazz Bass. Soon I will buy a P Bass. Because I need both sound characteristic.
I agree. I took it a step farther and put a Jazz neck on my P bass. Really, it's all I need.
All taste are not alike. I'm not sure what "sits in the mix better" really means but I play a J bass and have had no complaints. Wether I'm live or doing a studio session, I get my sound with my J bass. I do have a moded P bass(J pickup in the bridge position). I've never been a fan of the P bass slap tone so that's why I added the J pu to mine.
@@jamessmith-zk4co i think what "sits in the mix better" means is that a p has more of a rounder sound and is easier to produce whereas a j has a more brighter tone and can be overwhelming at times, although beautiful live. i've recorded with both and both sound great, although a lot more tweaking was involved with the j . just my two bits..
Fingers, P
Pick, P
Slap, J
Tone off, J
Chords, J

I love The pick sound of the jazz bass! I have a fender jazz mexican and it sounds amazing, finger pick and slap :)

In my opinion:
Fingers - Precision
Pick - for the high notes - Jazz; for the low notes - Precision
Slap - Jazz

You guys are my goto when i wanna hear the differences between certain types of bass or guitars.
No talking bullshit, just playing, how it should be
I got both. The right tool for the job. My '64 P has fat flat wound strings for reggae and a '72 has bright round wound for the growl thru my SVT. I got the first run of the MAJ Jaguar. 30 years playing
I wish the backing tracks were a bit lower
It‘s to demonstrate how they sit in the mix rather than the bass sounds themselves, I found it really helpful
Sometimes I wished they were slightly lower, but I think they managed to let each bass's special characteristics shine through just enough while still sounding like a real mix. I don't really mind it. It was really cool.
The bass is very present in the mix. I'm glad we get to hear it in the context of other instruments, to see how it sits in the mix.
The music is so loud you can't hear, do over with no tracks !!
I agree with Speelbergo but I also appreciate it was to demonstrate how they sound in the mix. I personally would have preferred a comparison with the other tracks lower at first then everything properly mixed so that we can hear both how they sound when pronounced and when alongside other instruments.
Great video.
Great playing.
Great tracks.
Really well done.
Yeah, I'm a firm believer in having one of each. The p/j combo just doesn't seem to do it for me (the p pickup doesn't sound full on, maybe because the wiring routes through the j, and the single bridge j doesn't get me there for the full on j sound). Plus you get two basses when you go with 1 of each, and one can never have too many basses. Anyways, great demo, as always.
I'm not here for the comparison, just enjoying your bass licks. So awesome
For any beginners - choose a jazz bass. For the same price you get tonal variety to play with, and can get pbass sound as well as the bridge pickup 'burp' plus a fantastic slap tone with both pups
And don't forget the beautiful neck of J bass.
Yes exactly. The neck is nice on the jazz bass. Hence why players swap a jazz neck on a p bass.
Also the jazz body shape is much cooler imho... The P body looks like it's failing to be rectangular and kinda griddier as a shape, while the J is like, naahh fuck simmetry!
@@mattseymour8637 also seen many players put a P bass neck on a Jazz body. I like the thicker neck, it has more meat to it, the strings respond differently.
This is the best video ever. Mad props to you guys for all this editing!!!
Judge?!? I don't think so. You made me fall in love with both again. They are two sisters I want to be with forever. Incredibly good playing dude. You feed me with those amazing Fender tones. These instruments built to be sound exactly like this. What a strong compositions by the way.
So this is something that I've been wrestling with and learning for quite a while. I've always gravitated towards the Jazz bass, while looking down my nose at the Precision bass because that's what I saw come in every starter bass pack at the store that was the bottom of the barrel starter bass 👎🏼 lol so I had the impression that the p bass is the most basic bass for beginners. I started learning that although I prefer my jazz, there are some times where the p bass may be a better fit in the mix. I'm blown away by how many hit records have a p bass on them. 🤷🏻 What can I say, they have a lot of home runs on the p bass, it seems a more reliable bottom end to have in a lot of different styles and settings. But to me I get so inspired when I hear that bright crisp, tight single coil sound of a jazz bass or something similar with single coils, I prefer to play that. But I do acknowledge that there is a place for both. 👍🏼💯
I really love the musical power and emotion of the P-Bass in a Band.
The P Bass laid a Low End Foundation on the bottom that makes the other instruments sound better .... Like the Shades of Black, Grey, Brown colors that makes the other Colors Pop ... the P bass tone is sitting on the back grooving :)
i cant stop watching this video, this guy is in another level, like the god of bass
Vine a ver una comparativa y me quedé por la tremenda música con la que hicieron este vídeo. Una belleza total. The music is incredible nice. Thanks.
This is the most helpful video i have found to clarify the fundamental differences between each other. Thanks for that. They sound so different it is difficult to say witch is best. To me JB is more versatile but PB has a far more round sound.
This really helped me decide thanks. Love that the fat is trimmed, no long talking segments
BOTH are amazing
Precicion: more bass tone.
Jazz: more mids and trebles tone.
ALSO when you roll off the bridge pickup on the jazz you get an IMITATION of the precision tone even NOT that MUDDY and ROUNDED as the precision.
Man the Jazz bass with pick is so underrated imo, love that growl
Im 100% for Jazz Bass, always love it in the mix
Tough battle because both are unbeatable in their PROPER PLACE! My 1st Jazz was a 68' and my first precision was a 71' fretless. I'm a 40 year bassist and have own countless brands but I always gravitate back to the jazz bass. I only own 3 basses now, all are "Squiers". A stock 07' deluxe vm V; a 09' deluxe vm IV w/ an Audere Classic 4 band preamp; and a 98' mim Precision w/ an Audere Classic 3 band preamp. I record and play these basses live, Proudly displaying the "Squier Logos" and watching the expressions on the face of the listeners and hearing them say: "That's a Squier??? I love it! As for the jazz or precision... I have to have them both!
Anderson McCant doesn't it stop being a precision if it's fretless?
Nice to hear you say this. I started out on a Squire, then bought a MIM and thought....hmm, that Squire actually plays better! After reading lots of reviews of Squires....it seems the secret is out. Squires are preferable.
Every time he plays the Jazz Bass I think the Seinfeld theme is about to come on.
That’s why I have such a hard time liking it/taking it seriously
All you need is love and a P Bass.
Got both!
LOWD jazz bass brah
Which bass is the p and which one is the j?
@@calebbesiata2128 the jazz bass (the best) is the yellow one
@@DaniloSilva-pl3sq oh okay I love the J bass alot better hahaha
love them both in different amounts, I own a 5 string Jazz Bass Elite from 2017 witch is awesome in almost all situations, a very modern and versatile sounding beast but my most beloved bass is a 2006 Precision 60` reissue that had some tweaks and upgrades, It just sits even better in the mix, it`s fucking awesome.... in this video it`s obvious that both basses sound good but the Precision is killing on most of the tracks... you can`t do better than a 4 string precision with a slim, fast jazz bass neck...
Great! Really helpful for me. Thanks.
It amazes me how just changing basses and change the way the entire mix/band sounds like. For me, the P-bass wins 😛
0:24 i always listen to it with my mouth open how this pboy amazingly sits in the mix
is it me or J and P sound almost identical when tone rolled off?
Troy zhx I agree with you, It's very tricky to know which bass is if you are not watching the video.
They really sound the same
P bass has much more pronounced low end. Put a bowl of coins on your amp and try both. P bass will rattle them easier every time.
Good! its not just me. He was able to get the same sounds out of both.
Troy zhx I agree, the jazz is just a little bit snaky.
I liked the jazz bass in a lot more of the examples than I was expecting to!
3:55 que coisa linda! Da vontade de nunca mais parar de escutar
Got one of each. Love them both! Practice with my P and gig with my J most the time.
Jazz bass, baby, all day long. The P has personality, to be sure, but for my ears, it virtually disappears in a mix where the J stands out without being obnoxious.
The jazz bass does sound distinctive and just keeps in the mix enough without getting lost
Yeah I agree.., with a P Bass it fades in the melody because then you can barley hear it and the Bass Lines sound muffled and flat sounding.
P disappears in the mix? huh? listen to any Motown song, the bass is there all day long. I do think the older ones have more distinct tone, the newer ones more generic.
@dhouse I agree. I also think what the mix sounds like without the bass has a lot to do with it. I find a P sits on top of the kick and below the snare, guitar and keys, and also has a high mid presence that all somehow fits right into all the the open frequencies without competing with the band. If the band is already taking up the same frequencies as the bass, that's when you might need a Jazz or Stingray to cut through like a chain saw.
Best comparison and playing demo on youtube i feel...thanks in assisting my decision.
Precision is more bass-y, Jazz is jazzy, but the winner is great bassist!
Great editing. A gold star for the day.
I can appreciate the Jazz for a lot of reasons but the Precision definitely cuts through the mix a little better and a punchier sound/tone which i desire.
Each to their own but an incredible video nevertheless
God, just listening to the various, great bass tones was enough for me, controversy be damned!
The Jazz - every tone you'll ever want :)
Props to the player!! Jazz is better presence while P is a blend in background
This was awesome man very well done great mix and playing loved it! Subs!
I´ve got a Sire V7 ash 5 string (jazz) and a P7 5 string (P/J) and a Music man Bongo 5HH. I almost only use the P7. Just love the sound of those precision pickups, and together with the jazz bridge pickup, you get almost the same "snap" as on the Jazz bass on both pickups, but with the warm precision depth.
Sire deserve all their praise but if you grew up with the Fender tone, the Sire probably will dissapoint. Sire has a very functional tone but lacks the colour and mojo of the original. Certainly for a P that you drive hard with powerful fretbuzz, Geezer Butler style. It might be as easy changing the passive pickups or some of the routing but this is the truth.
GREAT Video Comparison! Get a Fender P/J Configuration and get the BEST of both Worlds!
Thomas Puzio Sr since there's only 1 Jazz pickup on a P/J configuration won't that hurt the sound quality
Thomas Puzio Sr don't agree at all. PJ should only be on cheap beginner basses. It sounds totally wrong for me. but PJ works better on fretless basses than full Jazz
Douglas Jones it really hurts the sound
Bar Goldstein thats what I thought since there's not the balance between both pick ups on a P/J bass. I like the sound of a P bass I think I'm going to go that direction.
Douglas Jones i prefer an active Jazz or a Musicman, but P is pretty good too
プレベの奥から突き上げてくる感じの音がすきです〜
What a battle!
The first song really shows the difference. Before all of the other instruments come in, the J just kills it! But same tune, a few bars later with all the instruments in, the J gets buried and the P pulls ahead.
Please may I buy both?
Yeah, buy a PJ Bass and be happy! ;)
I must say, the recording theme of this video is really cool. It reminds me of like, the beginning of those fantasy basketball games where you pick your player, lol
The only difference between a P-bass and J-bass is that
P-bass has a distinct ''growl'' for rock music that suits really well for hard rock, jazz bass has a distinct slap tone that works for slap bass music especially funk
P bass is the original bass for soul and funk and not to mention slap bass was invented on a p bass by Larry Graham.
The J-bass sounds so good. Want it... Even though every bass guitar sounds a little different because of basic things like the set up/ string age, etc. And the vibration feedback feel while playing the notes is a thing too. The way a good P-bass feels is magic.
Would love seeing a list of these songs. Something to aspire to... beautiful playing btw, and yes, P bass all the way.
Thank you mate!
Shortest possible answer: Team J.
A little more nuance: I much prefer the look and feel of a P, but not only is the spectrum of sonic possibilities much much wider on a J, with that amazingly expressive thin bridge, and a respectable approximation of both the ubiquitous 57 P and even moreso, the original "tele" 51 P by way of the Jazz Neck, but even the hallmark "J Bass sound" itself (that is, both pickups on at once) I prefer over the P sound in greater than 50% of contexts (with, once again, a relatively decent P-Bass impersonation on deck already with the neck-only mode for when you need / want that sound).
The P vs the J neck is a matter of "chunky" vs "waxy" with more low mids and mids in the P, and an overall "fuller" sound, vs a more articulate sound that, yes, is a little brighter with stronger highs and high mids, and can easily be perceived as "thinner" with the weaker low-mids. But what surprised me is that in direct comparisons, the extreme lows have actually been stronger on the J neck. Whether that "waxy" attack on the J neck is a blessing or a curse relative to the more hallmark "chunky" of the 57 split-coil P is one part subjective tastes and another part context.
Yes, overall, I at least slightly prefer the more ubiquitous P over the J neck. But I see both as excellent sounds, and close enough that the one could fill in for the other convincingly well in a real pinch. And again, the neck is one of only three broadly defined sound styles the J gives you, where love it or hate it, what you get with the P is what you get, and it's a lot more one-dimensional.
Lastly, where am I coming from on this, like, am I saying this as a J-Bass owner, P-Bass owner, both, neither, other? Well, I have (among others) a 2008 MIA Fender standard J-Bass, and a 1984 Electra-Westone XJ700B Futura bass, which, cosmetically, is insanity, but functionally, in terms of electronics, neck shape, size, scale, as well as in terms of tone woods, is just a P-Bass. In fact, it's been modded with a 2008 MIA standard Fender P-Bass pickup, so it's an even more direct comparison. So, both, is the short answer.
My one complaint with this video is that you didn't show bridge and neck-only modes at all. It was just JJ vs P and that was it. So you only showed one third of the J-Bass, and missed a great opportunity to compare J neck vs P. Otherwise, I loved it! The sound quality, the visual presentation, the riffs and playing, as well as the background tracks, and the various play styles are all wins in my book! Only you shouldn't have bound yourself to just the one JJ mode on the J.
Cheers!
I love the sound of the Jazz Bass by itself but the P Bass really does sit in the mix so much better. I wonder how a Stingray would compare.
Between the two, I'm a Jazz Bass kinda guy, but they (like everything) have limitations. If I could just have one electric bass, it'd probably be a Jazz with P/J pickups. Since I can have as many as I like, my passive basses (fretted and fretless) are both Japanese Jazz Bass Special (an 85 and an 88) necks with Warmoth alder/flamed maple Jazz bodies routed for P-pickups and 2 controls. They both have EMG GZR-P pickups in them, which are a pretty damn good interpretation of a good 60s P-Bass but with brand new reliability and clarity.
If I want less of a P-Bass sound, I have my Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling 4 H fretted and 4 HS fretless, which (to me) make Jazz Basses (and several other classic models) unnecessary, if not obsolete. On the rare occasion that I want a tone I can't get from my Jazzcisions or Sterlings, I do have a G&L L-2000 that is an absolute chameleon, those things can do anything.
Excelent video! Thanks!
Man, tone off is where the battle's at
They both have the sound , i can't choose cause i own and love them both💞
Jazz bass seems to have that twang that I like about telecasters
So smooth, so relaxing. Loved this video!
I just really like the sound of single coils. J for me.
Both sound great! I have both but play the Jazz more.
I have bought a Jazz Bass a few years ago. It's just more versatile than the Preci. If you want P-sounds, use the neck pickup...
Thank you! 50 comments to find the obvius smart answer.
You need both. They are awesome basses
I feel like they got the names backwards: the precision seems warmer and jazzier and the jazz sounds more articulated and bright.
Anyways I prefer the p bass because that’s what I own haha love that off white jazz I’m tho 😍
The Precision is named as such because it has frets, which made it way easier to play in tune than with an upright bass. The Jazz Bass is named as it is because... some reason. It was probably aimed to be for jazz players but has also been adopted by at least someone in every genre.
@@blue-tb2fd the jazz bass was first introduced as the "deluxe bass" because of the wider range of tones provided by the two pickup configuration, but it was then renamed "jazz bass" to be aimed at jazz players who still preferred the thinner neck of an acoustic double bass. Precision bass necks start wide at the nut and remain fairly constant while jazz bass necks start thin and then get wider towards the body. The name is also a nod to the jazzmaster guitar, which was the inspiration for the body shape. Despite all the effort, most jazz players still favoured acoustic double basses, but the name was kept.
Superb bass playing Vadik
The precision bass wins for me,it has warmer tone and overall simple setting 👌
true, you just plug it in, turn up the volume knob and perfect tone for a band.
Convinced by this excellent demonstration, both have that special something that make them unique.
The Jazz Bass sounds so iconic and has so much personality... That snarl and growl is my favorite bass sound. The Precision Bass is kinda lifeless and has no character, but that's exactly what you want a lot of the time. Jazz for those complex, feature bass lines that matter in the song and are meant to be heard, and the P Bass for taking up bass frequencies and delivering that low-end punch you need to really make a track bloom.
Exactly what I was thinking. The Jazz bass sounds really distinct and instantly recognizable. The P bass just sounds dull to me
I've Always thought it was kind of opposite but that's when being a heavy handed player. A Hard driven P sounds so incredibly iconic to me. I used to think the jazz was just quite versatile and a bit, just, funtional and slighty too unballsy most of the time, but now I think the Jazz sounds very sweet in a way. I've grown to love it, but I'm very much more a P-bass fanboy. All hail Geezer Butler.
I like the elegance of the Precision tone for session musicians.
How do I say to my wife that I’ll buy two basses instead of one?
By telling her that they're squiers 😂
Hahaha say they came as a "bundle" a very expensive bundle... 🤣
Solution: buy one PJ
Thats why I made my el degas japanese P bass into a frankenbass PJ with seymour hot stack jazz pick and seymour steve harris p pick ups and boy its a MONSTER lol ;)
I want the P Bass! NO, no I want the J Bass! No wait wait, I want the P Bass!
The best Pbass v Jbass comparison I've ever seen, nice job...
Great comparison. I'm more partial to the Jazz Bass.
Love it, I own a jazz and sterling, that jazz sits so well in the mix but that p sounds so direct, almost mono. Love em both
The P bass is more interesting in a heavy mix... In the rest of I would prefer the j bass.
Fantastic work. Great comparison, superb editing, and awesome playing...
precision is my choice! 👌👌
Thanks for this ingredible demonstration!
I am gonna buy a new bassguitar soon.
But I still can't decide! Both are absolutely GREAT!
But I think the P will make the race!
P-Bass just sounds warmer and better ;)
this video proofs it! here its finally clear! you need both!
what kind of sorcery is this / nice playing
Yea this answers the question which one I need.....its both
