Eventide Timefactor - Looper/Sampler Explained

  • This video demonstrates some of the main features in the highly underrated and under-discussed looper in the Eventide Timefactor. I use it extensively as a looper/sampler in my modular synth system, for finding interesting loops to build a piece from, and for making glitchy sample-noise stuff, including granular/wavetable-like effects. Lots of hands-on control for parameters offering a huge range of possibilities, from simple looping/overdubbing, to stuttering effects & music concréte sound collages (both using the Replace mode).
    3:58 - actual looping starts after long intro.
    9:00 - I stop talking and start jamming
    Some music I made with two Timefactors as loopers:

    Very interesting! Who would have thought that Timefactor's Loopmode has so many features? Will try that, hoping it can be synced up to MIDI clock. Thanks for putting this video together! It shows again that there's so much to explore with the gear you already have instead of buying more 😀

    Very thorough video. Thanks for posting this - it was extremely insightful. I just got this pedal today after being an avid fan of the DL4 looping/reverse/double/half-time features for ambient loops. I now realize the DL4 has nothing on the Timefactor - thanks to your video!
    Cheers!

      Hi, thanks for the kind words! I looked into a lot of loopers before discovering what this could do, and never looked back. There's still no looper *pedal* today, in this compact form, that has start/end point control like this, which is essential for the kinds of things I like to do.

      It's amazing that this was released exactly 10 years ago (2008), and it's still in production, and it's still one of the most full-featured delay pedals - stereo i/o, line/amp level switch, MIDI in/out, even a USB port!! It was all there from the beginning and still plays well with anything made today.

    Thanks for posting this. I didn't know the Timefactor could do this. I was going to buy an old Digitech PDS 20/20 for these features but I couldn't pull the trigger on paying $200 on a 30 year old pedal. Plus the Echolution 2 does most of this and more but it's damn near $500 bucks. You can get a Timefactor for a little over two hundred and it's an Eventide which make the sound quality tops!

      Hey Ja'Maul, thanks for watching and so glad you found it useful! Yeah it's totally worth every penny. There aren't a lot of delay pedals, even now, that includes MIDI for tempo-syncing and control of every parameter. And this thing is almost 10 years old.

      Thanks for the feedback (no pun intended!! If you can grab one, I highly recommend it! First thing to do when you get one make sure the firmware is up to date (and make sure the previous user de-registers it if he/she has previously registered it with Eventide), so that the looper has all the features. I believe the reverse playback was added in a later firmware update.

    Does the looper is post or pre fx ? In other words , can we record the engaged delay fx into the looper or not ?

    • @musictech_10us
      @musictech_10us  Год назад +1

      no, the looper is not connected to the fx at all sadly. you're either using the looper or you're using the delay algorithms, no delay effect when you're using looper. but that's why i got two of them :)

    • @saintannsbeach
      @saintannsbeach 4 месяца назад

      Have you considered a Strymon Timeline? It does delay and looper with the delay either in front of or after the looper.

  • @girlinagale

    It's not like a looper pedal, it's like a Eurorack sample looper. Actually really interesting.

    • @tallbridge

      girl in a gale Yeah, I sold my Eurorack sampler module (which was amazing but required a bit too much menu-diving) and bought a second Timefactor, and it’s changed my life and workflow ever since.

      @@tallbridge Just bought a Mutable Instruments Rings and need something like Clouds but can't afford it. But Time Factor offers similar textures/repeats. I have H9 and am looking for Clouds type fx.

    Thank you so much for this video! I don't remember if it has timestretch?

    • @musictech_10us
      @musictech_10us  2 года назад +1

      Hi! The Timefactor doesn't do "timestretching" in the sense of changing pitch without changing speed. If you change the pitch, the speed changes accordingly, more like a tape machine.

    Hello! Just a question
    Can i save a loop or pre record a loop in time factor ? Even if i turn off the time factor
    The loop will be still there?
    Thank you :)

    • @musictech_10us
      @musictech_10us  5 лет назад

      Hi Lance, the Timefactor cannot save loops on power-off. I don't even think you can load loops through the USB (which I think is used for saving/loading delay presets). I've had to basically sample everything into Ableton to save it. There are many other looper pedals (Boss RC-3 and other RC's) and some newer looper pedals with SD card slots or USB that will allow you to save loops and recall them. Hope that helps!

    Can someone tell me how to save the looper on a preset so I can use it with the looper? I can’t seem to figure it out.

    • @musictech_10us
      @musictech_10us  4 года назад

      Hey Mark- You can save the looper preset into a bank just like you save any other preset. When you're in the looper mode, hold the encoder and then pick the bank and slot you want to save it on. Does that help?

    • @musictech_10us
      @musictech_10us  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Frank, I've never used the MIDI clock sync on it, but I believe there are details about it in the manual. I've used it as an experimental looper/sampler for my modular synth system. Good luck!

    • @musictech_10us
      @musictech_10us  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Frank, sorry for the delay! I never used MIDI sync, but I recently went to a friend's house and he had the Timefactor tempo-synced with a whole bunch of other gear, so yes, it will do MIDI clock sync as far as I know. Hope this still helps!
