    Consistency has definitely helped a lot! And it actually also helps me to recognize hurdles much more easily, because if I have the habit and am still experiencing resistance, it must be coming from elsewhere. Very happy to have such an awesome and consistent co-working buddy :D

    My 'writing habit' is now about one year old (I have always seen myself as a writer, but there was a lot in my life keeping me from consistent writing, until in the early months of 2022, I decided that now was the time).
    Lessons I personally have taken away: Make the act of sitting down to write a habit in itself. Some days, when writing isn't going to happen for one reason or another, even five minutes of sitting down, writing a sentence or two about why writing isn't going to happen today, can help keep that habit alive.
    Aside from that, giving myself compassion and grace on the days where I can't write (chronic illness, in my case, but any other obstacle can apply) has helped a lot to keep the frustration barrier low, and make it much easier and more pleasant to sit down the next day and pick up the writing again, without any self-recriminations getting in the way.

    ... yes multiple projects. And importantly, different sizes, types and due dates/flexed... and then pick one for today's/this morning's session.
    And James's advice is great - but also see BJ Fogg's on the building of habits, and he and his team will walk you through the initial steps, fun too. Good luck with the running. [[Tiny Habits - BJ Fogg ]]

    At least for me, having at least one other person to "share" the experience of doing something helps me to move forward as a game developer. However, I can say that when writing it is not the same. When I am writing, I immerse myself into that world and imagine the story as it unfolds. Let's just say it wouldn't be easy to do that if I were constantly interrupted by incoming discord texts. hehe. But, everyone is different. So, if it works for you...

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Год назад

      Omg, I hear you about discord!! I find that very annoying and have to fully quit discord when I'm writing. I meet my writing buddy on a private zoom call and we work for 25 minutes, then chat for 5 minutes, then go back to working. So, the distractions are scheduled and offer a nice break!

    I’ve been trying to get into writing every day for my PhD. However, ‘every day’ for me only means two days per week, since I’m doing my PhD part time and I’m trying to not work on the weekends until I absolutely have to. I still think it’s working really well though, because it’s every PhD day.

    Do you have any videos on overcoming imposter syndrome?

  • @chocomendoza
    @chocomendoza Год назад

    morgan this is brilliant thanks a lot!. though the tricky part gets to how to crack, in the first place, the impostor syndrome we have? which tips and knowledge could you share with us about that battlefield inside our heads? as a racialized migrant women in a top university in Europe this haas been one of my biggest, if not the most, challenge i've faced in the last years doing my phd. Therapy is crucial, yes.. bt girlll. i sense you can share a ton more of insights, practicalities, etc.. Thanks in advance and for your amazing vlog!

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Год назад +1

      Maybe I'll have to make a whole video about imposter syndrome. I feel like every PhD RUclipsr does it eventually :P My top tip would be to talk to other PhD students about it. Because many of us feel inadequate and like outsiders; you're not alone in this! Lots of times I'll see other PhD students who look like they're doing super well, but then when I talk to them, it turns out they are struggling just as much as I am. We just don't talk to each other enough, so we think we're alone in our emotions. Also, for so long academia valued objectivity and emotional distance from research to ensure its authenticity. But c'mon! We're human! We can't help but feel emotions towards our research and they won't always be positive ones! So, I think sharing our emotions - both positive and negative - with other PhDs is a great step towards recovering from imposter syndrome! Even our supervisors likely felt like an imposter at some point - or still do.

    How did you crack the code for imposter syndrome? I internally struggle with this. I often don't recognize myself having self doubt, and it's really hard to getting around it.

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Год назад +2

      I've been thinking about how to respond to this comment. Then I did some reflecting on this past year and how I managed to mostly eliminate my perfectionism, procrastination, and imposter syndrome. And I think it all came down to one thing for me. It was a fear of criticism/other people's comments on my work. When I feel imposter syndrome, I'm afraid I'll be "found out." But that just made me HIDE from other people. And if we hide from others, we will never break into a field; we will never experience success; we will never stop feeling like an outsider!
      Posting on RUclips helped me realize that having other people comment on my work is not so bad. Yes, some of them tell me I'm an imposter, but we can't please everyone. The more of my work I share, the less I feel like an imposter. The more of my work I produce and publish, the less I procrastinate and the less perfectionistic I am with each piece. So, all of these things contribute to each other, for me!
      I will make a video about this, because these were some big revelations for me last year!

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Год назад +2

      So, in summary: Do your best to ignore the imposter syndrome for a minute and start sharing your work. Talking about our imposter syndrome and our work helps us connect with others and realize that we are not imposters. We're all struggling with these things and we're all contributors to academia (or whatever field you're in).

      @@morganeua I appreciate you 💜 with the pandemic, I've been really isolated so I'm guessing it's what exasperated my imposter syndrome. My Supervisor has also been MIA for a year... I appreciate you. I will definitely focus on healing that part this year.

    What do you like to write? Do you feel this would work with video scripts or ideas? I guess that would be a type of writing. Also Is there a magical place to get a good accountability buddy?

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Год назад +1

      Honestly, I think this would work for nay habit you want to develop. Habits get created accidentally, too, like if I woke up and spent 2 hours watching netflix, that'd be consistent, but accidental. Or if I woke up and went for a run, that habit would develop eventually too, especially if I had someone to run with, etc. So yes, it would work for video scripts/ideas! And I probably should set aside a time to work on RUclips content myself so that I do it on a regular basis!
      And I don't think there is a magical place :( Especially because I think it works best if the relationship forms organically and you like each others' styles of working and you get along. But if you start searching for someone, put it out into the universe, then I'm sure you'll find someone/a group of people. That's what happened for me!
