For me movie is a travel from self pity to Oneness of all(Advaita), Four purusharthas namely Kama,artha,dharma & moksha are fitted against Shilpa,Dhanasekar,Mugil & Kaaji respectively. Traditionally adolescence is attributed to Kama, youth to artha, middle aged to dharma & old age to moksha. Director has cleverly shuffled the end goals , adolescent Kaaji getting the bliss of moksha, youthful mugil ranting about dharma , middle aged shilpa getting the love she longed for & Elderly dhanasekar getting the wealth. This shuffling is directors s way of questioning the Order or Tradition on the Whole
Further , there are numerous acts which happens twice 1)Mugil & Vembu Visit the rail track twice, 2) Berlin’s Standoff with Shilpa twice in Police Station 3) Boys gang visit Settu house twice 4) Dhanam comes back to his Sabha twice 5) Shilpa deciding to leave again but stopped,6) plane seen through the roof, this makes a curious case of repeatedness of events possibly hinting at rebirth or second chance
Further, there are various clues in the background as the movie moves on indicating for things about to happen (Vazhvin Ragasiyam & Alien movie posters) a touchy crafty way of hinting at the role of Intuition
Further, most touchy of them all is how Kaaji is split into Two indicating the first cell splitting into two a revelation most needed to understand the oneness of all
Further, heady cocktail editing, music, old songs timelessness of the visuals makes viewers lose their time orientation, possibly indicating eternity of Time
Further, Director reposes his faith on Karma & Morality unstatedly , Berlin s end may be a work of Chance but director punishes the most evil , for other characters have their redemptive moments despite all their faults perhaps second coming of everyone of them is their chance for redemption which they grab on to, all except, Berlin. In him we watch excruciatingly helplessly the unfolding evil.
Full hundred marks for those two pickle jars as installations

Super deluxe....super explanation..... you express the director precisely....all other people are simply talk about the dialogue and sex....but you only told the idealogy..... good

After 26 years, I have had to change my policy to watch this movie again solo... Anything for this man TK.
I'm proud to say that I have watched Aaranya Kaandam in theatre with just 10 people in theatre including 3 from my group which I pulled them
*Super Deluxe*
A plot inside which there are 4 sub plots and all these plots has different story line and different genre though it's within the main plot all the more nonlinear story telling adds a vibrant hook to the film... I need to write a separate write up to talk about the director Thiagarajan Kumararaja for his brilliance in the craft and the way he staged the film.. let's discuss about individual performance first.
The very first frame a black screen and title card and you are already in to the Crux of the first plot even before the characters are introduced.. That brilliant is the directorial skill and story telling and screenplay writing.
Samantha as vembu- Sexual feeling can come to anyone upon anyone and at anytime... Her simple dialogue reveals all that.. she has done a very cheeky role in a fantastic way.. life is all about the space you give and space you get to be you is the thread of her character which she holds it till last frame of the film..
FAHAD as Mugil - A Subtle character who doesn't over react even though he sees a dead body is what he is made of.. his screen presence is tidy though less scope for acting.. I felt there is a separate scene which is added just to portray his skills which was very obvious as we already know his abilities...
Dead body - after magalir mattum (Nagesh) a full length dead body character who just steals the show a well done job..
Gaaji - A cool hero minded Character well portrayed by this man... His dialogue delivery has a unique punch and it just steals the show...
Thuyavan - an ordinary specs guy who has nothing but friends and his presence on screen is equally great..
Mutta bonda - this man is soooper on screen he just gives u a comical relief and does it so well..
Soori - An angry boy who could not digest someone on screen runs with a weapon and that run ends up in a different plot.. well executed stuff..
Mohan - a runner boy who runs through out the movie and engages us with his pace..
Ramya Krishnan as Leela- she just transforms from Sivagami Devi in bahubali to an actor of a porn movie and a typical mother who is worried about her child and inabilities of hubby.. just mind blowing performance inside hospital shows her experience.. Her versatility is well utilized...
Myskin as Dhanasekar (a) Arputham - A well written character and a well maintained acting skills throughout.. he steals the show just by his dialogue delivery skills..
Ramasamy - His harmonica and his naan satchi dialogue is extremely well crafted and used whenever required .. he does his role well..
Mirnalini as alien - she just did her bit in explaining the oneness in everything and the duality in everything very well.. infact that's the thread of the movie too..
Gayathri as Pooja - does a family based mother who is waiting for her hubby to come back after he left them for 7.5yrs as tidy as possible.. her tear filled eyes are best utilized.. The moment she accepts her husband as what he is, is the kick of her character and she does a seemlessly neat job...
Master Ashwanth as Rasukutty - his serial experience has helped him to do this important and meaty role so beautifully... He just adds so much value to the entire sub plot.. An award on the way baby.. Get ready.. Director guaged his skills very well and wrote this...
Vijay Sethupathy as Manickam & Shilpa - he just tones down his voice and tuned up his performance as Shilpa... In scenes like police station fight with Baks and underground scene with myskin he just rules it...
Bhagavathy perumal as Berlin - an irritating police officer does his best to irritate us so that we feel like killing him... Well portrayed character of his lifetime..
There are few characters more who grabs our attention and steals the show like auto driver, grandpa, grandma, aeroplane, TV, black cover, Ilayaraja songs as RR, who just did their roles so efficiently..
Nirav Shah and p s vinod have just given u a visual treat without disturbing our eyes and vision and without irritating with lights and played a beautiful script with colours, tone and pallette..with Rgb as the colour tone R they trying to tell that they are showing us the basics of everything? ... kudos to both..
Art department at it's best starting from costumes to postures to narrow lanes and congested roads to a manless level crossing to a old company set up and those black covers... U guys marked ur presence very well...
Editor Sathyaraj cannot cut this film better and serve it to us the most complicated script with a simple narration.. amazing work..
Yuvan Shankar Raja - U just played with your job man... U played single key for long time and created that irritation in the scene.. u played a jingle to ease out the pain.. u played star war music in nadaswaram and nailed it in one scene ... U r just amazing man... One of your best works.
Sound design - I wish I could get a audio track of the entire film to hear it and enjoy . It's so amazing... Loved it . Cat sound, atmospheric sound, layers of sound mixing... pppaaaa... Will watch it again only for you Arun Seenu Duo..
TKR - you are just a monster in film making.. you gave ur work to talk about you for next ten yrs and by that time u will prepare for another movie..

I have never written anyone before. This is my first time. I have lived abroad about 35 years. I just started
watching Tamil movies. I have not seen super delux, but I like Mr. Vijay Sethu pathis acting. I try not to miss his movies. I like only unusual movies. I have to tell you I accidentally saw you this afternoon your review on super Delux, you do a fantastic job,step by step. I appreciated you not putting anyone down. It takes lots of finance and guts to act in movies. You were so wonderful. Keep up the good work. I will look for your review from now on. Blessings.
...strong women characters in the movie...iyalba life la epdi womenku equal part irukko andha maadhiri dhaan padathlayum irukku... expect an 'U' rated movie from this great director so that we all can sit up together as a family and enjoy the 'Thaen' 🍯 😀

Amazing review. This review is a perfect proof that this movie is a classic. Any classic - be it movie or literature tends to give the room for it's audience to add their imaginations to the actual art. Kudos to the way you have perceived the movie. Hope your reviews will keep getting better and better.
An in depth analysis of the metaphors and callbacks in the movie(spoiler alert) my favorite part of this movie is minute details in it 1) when the "body" mattress falls of the balcony and the desi instrumental version of star wars theme plays and the scene is edited in a way to resemble the initial scroll that we see in star wars 2) when ghaji is in the tv shop for the first time as he's watching a song playing we see that a feature on aliens is playing in the second t.v down below foreshadowing his choice & fate 3) ghaji wears a shirt which has a half cat on it's front & the other half on it's back. i think it's symbolic of schrodingers cat & the quantum mechanics concept of "superposition" especially when the alien creates or pulls out another ghaji from the existing ghaji. 3) berlin says that heart is like a monkey and he gets killed by a t.v whose company's name is "flying monkey" 4) right before shilpa comes back home there is a shot of army of ants marching up & down the door frame with people in the background conversing and as soon as raaskutti mentions his father a large & a different ant enters the frame signalling how the expected guest will be different from others 5) berlin saves a worm in the station from being squashed & in the next scene he's cursed by shilpa and the whole shot plays out like shilpa is trying to squash berlin with her hand, which shows that berlin is the worm hence his unnatural kindness to the worm in the previous scene.

@@balasai7975 i didn't notice it but i guess it must be a forewarning of the things that are about to come which will engulf them and turn their world upside down, just like the wave. the mis-en-scene of the film is mind boggling.

Centipede is similar to Berlin.. he said that to remove from here or else it will get crushed by someone. Like that bucks was crushed by TV (kids thrown unanimously).

I love the way you started this review.. I can connect to most of your thoughts. This the craziest cinematic experience I've had in a long, long time. Dark, funny, eccentric and layered; this is Tamil cinema's boldest attempt in recent years. A terrific social commentary on life, sex, gender, science, religion, spirituality, marriage and faith. I cant recommend enough to watch this gem. Take a bow Tarantino of Tamil industry..
Loved your in depth review and analysis of the movie...I have seen the movie twice so far and one thing that always keeps me wondering if there's a loss of connectivity is....The movie time line is pretty much happens in one day...Berlin when they show him for the first time he is entering the police station & is wearing white shirt & dhoti with a flower garland (I'm guessing the time frame is morning) yet he follows Sam & Fahad throughout from their apt till remote location to the warehouse.How this transformation happened? what's the logic

Sudhir, impressive review intro. But, you mentioned that filmmaker made a movie for his own satisfaction (then it's masterb*****). TK might also not agree on it.
