  • Gibson says the graphic battle scenes in 'Hacksaw Ridge' are meant not to glorify war but to convey the magnitude of the danger faced by the soldiers fighting it.

    Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

    Apocalypto is still one of the most underrated movies to this day, IMHO. If any other director had done it, it would have instantly been declared a masterpiece. But, because it was Mel Gibson, it hardly got any recognition at all, let alone the accolades it deserved.

      Everyone knows talk shows are rehearsed, but that has nothing to do with what I was saying.
      I was saying that I hope in the future the media in general can put Mel Gibson's massive mistakes behind him. It was 10 years ago, yes what he said was gross, yes we all know about it. But he isn't comfortable talking about it, and I don't find it interesting hearing him still having to talk about it after all these years.
      It doesn't matter if it's rehearsed or not, I know that he knew beforehand that he would have to talk about it. That doesn't matter. I was saying that I don't want to read about it anymore in articles, see it talked about by news outlets, or see him talk about it in interviews. It's old news, and frankly boring. He has been re-embraced by the film industry after being a pariah for 10 years, so let him talk about what he is there to promote and actually wants to talk about.

    I never judged Mel Gibson, nor did I judge Shia Labeouf for his breakdowns or outbursts.
    1. It's not in my place to judge someone I barely know, and only through cinematics.
    2. They live a life in the spotlight, and so everything they do is on display.
    3. If our "friend" had a tough time, we would help him/her through it.
    Unless he raped, killed or otherwise did something similar of terrible nature - I don't care.
    I recognize Mel for his skill/talent, and have been a fan of his work for many years.

      A good interview always has to have hard questions, those are the ones the audience really want an answer to. At least imo.
      Just an example. I don't want you to invite Kanye West to talk about his new album and how "good" he is. I want you to invite him to ask him "are you delusional or just trolling all of us" xD (not the best example since he'd either walk off stage or go on a rant but you get what I mean)

And when they climb and the blood drips down....Because it's not some bogey man. That's a real life terror you're going into. "I asked Mel to present this award for me for a reason. When I couldn't get sober, he told me not to give up and encouraged me to find my faith. It didn't have to be his or anyone else's, as long as it was rooted in forgiveness. And I couldn't get hired, so he cast me in the lead of a movie that was actually developed for him. He kept a roof over my head and food on the table and, most importantly, he said if I accepted responsibility for my wrongdoing and embraced that part of my soul that was ugly--hugging the cactus, he calls it--he said that if I hugged the cactus long enough, I'd become a man.
      "I did, and it worked. All he asked in return was that someday I help the next guy in some small way. It's reasonable to assume at the time he didn't imagine the next guy would be him, or that someday was tonight. So, anyway, on this special occasion and in light of recent holidays including Columbus Day, I would ask that you join me, unless you are completely without sin, in which case you picked the wrong f--king industry, in forgiving my friend his trespasses and offering him the same clean slate you have me, allowing him to continue his great and ongoing contribution to our collective art without shame. He's hugged the cactus long enough."
      -Robert Downey Jr. (2011)

      It really shines a light on the type of person he is in real life. He strikes me as a very genuine person. He wrestles with demons like many of us, but he's also the type of guy who wouldn't hesitate to take time out from his busy life to help RDJ. I mean, he really took him under his wing when RDJ was at perhaps his lowest place in life. And he never talked about once, never wanted a pat on the back that so many others would have savored. But most importantly, he's a brilliant filmmaker and I'm very much looking forward to his future projects.

    why was Colbert trying to make it awkward?

    • @george_was_curious6710
      @george_was_curious6710 7 лет назад +4

      That's what he does. Colbert has a Ph.D. in subtle sarcasm and ball busting, and its almost always nothing personal; he just has fun with it. When you get a little free time, look up his interview with Eminem. The shit had me rolling.

      That is what parts him from let's say Fallon who laughs like a silly boy at everything the guests say.

      Colbert is a corporate tool, so he was trying to distance himself from Gibson in order to avoid any damage to his own reputation.

      his antisemitism comes to mind

    • @Jaysen6740
      @Jaysen6740 7 лет назад

      And just how is he antisemitic? Because he directed the Passion of the Christ? That was not an antisemitic film. It simply told the story of Christ's crucifixion which was in fact because of the Jewish leaders. I remember at the time the movie came out, Jews were shaming Mel Gibson for antisemitism and saying that Christians would be lashing out at Jews and there would be riots...blah, blah, blah. Never happened because Christians understand that without the crucifixion of Christ we have no hope. Mel Gibson most certainly is not antisemitic. He simply told the biblical story.

    • @BigOlWalrus
      @BigOlWalrus 7 лет назад +5

      Jaysen Gill Those are some wild conclusions you made there but I was referencing to his anti-jewish rants which included saying things like:
      "Fucking Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world"
      I'm surprised you haven't heard of this yet, just look up: Mel Gibson antisemitism. There's a lot of trash he said

    • @Jaysen6740
      @Jaysen6740 7 лет назад +1

      So if he is so antisemitic, then why did he cast Andrew Garfield as the main character of his new movie who is a Jew?

    • @BigOlWalrus
      @BigOlWalrus 7 лет назад +7

      Jaysen Gill That's not really an excuse for his past comments :/ He could have learned from his mistakes but I'm just saying that statements like those are why people might dislike him

    • @leetledrummerboy

      Sure, there are some self righteous asshats that won't watch a movie because a guy who was involved in its production at one point said a thing they didn't like (spoiler alert btw that's every movie ever so to really live up to that dumbass standard you'd have to stop watching movies altogether).
      Normal people would watch the movie anyways if it looked like a good movie. But the decision wasn't made by the actual movie buying public. It was made by a few powerful people who bullied him out of the industry cause they decided that kind of thing is their decision to make.

    Props to Mel Gibson for not shying away and being ok about talking about his past "wrongs". I think it's irrelevant and a bit rude to bring it up, but understand that it can become a bigger elephant in the room if not addressed. It takes a certain courage, humility, faith and knowing yourself to open up like he has. Also feel bad that his life is under a microscope. As if he is the only person to ever make mistakes and say something out of line
