Urban Is Not CQB

  • Today I discuss why the notion that Urban Combat is 100 yards and in only, especially for civilians in a WROL setting, is wrong. Not only will the average engagement range likely be much higher, but it won't imitate range practice.

    When I was in Ramadi, we had all types of engagements to include: clearing houses, patrolling urban and sub-urban streets, and rural farm lands. Most, and by most I mean the grand majority of all firefights happened within 75 yards. Even in the rural areas. And we were using iron sights. I didn’t get an ACOG until halfway through my deployment. Most people saying that they need magnification probably cannot even calculate the bullet drop of a 5.56 round at 600 yards in the first place. I’ll trust my ability to be able to properly move through urban environments and close-with on a person than their ability to try and take a long shot at me. Situational awareness and movement is more important than optics.

    • @SituationalCitizen
      @SituationalCitizen 2 года назад +437

      @@rt66rc86 shotguns do not have the penetration of a rifle cartridge. In a real firefight, you are shooting through doors, walls, windows, whatever you can. Shotguns are only really good for exposed targets. Even slugs I would pass on. In a gunfight I want more ammo, which a shotgun does not have. Most people don’t even really aim in a gunfight, so they fire a lot of rounds. And also, people do not go down with one round. The guy who thinks they are just going to drop targets with one well placed shot all the time is way misguided. I have seen a full grown man take over a dozen 5.56 rounds from under 20 feet away before dropping. Unless you’re hitting “T” box every time, on a moving target that is shooting back at you…more ammo and volume of fire.

      If I'm anticipating a "gunfight" happening past 300-400 yards I'm going with a full power rifle cartridge, not an intermediate cartridge. Granted if I'm anticipating a fight that far in advance then I'm just going to do whatever I can to avoid it to begin with, but like he said, the fight picks you so if I *have* to engage at extended distance with 5.56 I can because the vast majority of lpvo's come standard with a BDC reticle or at least have it as an option.
      Training is king no matter what, if you have an LPVO then you need to know your holds by heart with your ammo, and either get really good at estimating range or carry a rangefinder (I carry a rangefinder because I live in the sticks and it's not uncommon at all for me to have 1000m+ sightlines) I have 3 rifles for different "scenarios" I have a 13.7 with an LPVO and canted red dot for 0-300 yards, I have an 18" AR10 with a 4.5-27 for anything between 200-800, and for reaching past 800 I have a 300PRC with a 5-35 and a rangefinder mounted directly to the gun.
      I have my dope cards attached to the rifle calibrated for my ammo and I only use that ammo to keep it consistent.
      The biggest difference between ramadi and anywhere in America is the level of equipment and training, they didn't have readily available access to high quality optics like Americans do, and 99.9% relied on irons and spraying which needs to be relatively close to be effective. Even If they had the ability to attempt to fight beyond 75 yards that put them at a further disadvantage because of the tech and training superiority that we had. I want it to be clear that I'm not discounting your experience or service, but the reason your engagements happened at relatively close range is because that was to your enemy's advantage, if they felt confident picking fights at longer ranges they certainly would have, just look at Afghanistan for proof, they would often shoot from so far away they were straining the capability of their (and our) weapons because they had the ability to choose their fights.

    People forget the biggest reason for magnification, Identification. Sure, you can take a shot at a few hundred yards with irons or a red dot. But do you actually know what you're shooting at? with your naked eye at 500 yards, can you positively identify that the target is your friend, your enemy, a neutral person, a decoy. magnification can help you detect a trap before you bumble into a trap.

    • @gordonjohnson405
      @gordonjohnson405 2 года назад +18

      Identification is MET-T dependent. At 300 yd a person's silouette is a little narrower than an M16's iron front sight post. At 500 yards it is about half of an M14's front sight post... But the M14 has a really sharp front sight post and its corners are good for measuring.
      Outside of an Iraq situation you look at the uniform. On the uniform the easiest distance indicator was usually the shape of the helmet or other headgear.
      In an Iraq situation, who cares? In tikrit in 2003 guys would spray-and-pray from the bridge over the Tigris down into Camp Ironhorse every single day. Their buddies would take pot-shots at the gates every single time a convoy entered or exited. Those guys were mostly not capable of marksmanship beyond about 50-75M. At that time, you ignored those guys, and only worried about the ones who did it right.

Or is that the guy who tried raiding me last night or is that some new person that might be a possible friend.
      Since I don't view shooting everything that moves as a viable solution, identifying and figuring out what I'm looking at is doing is paramount

    My experience in Iraq tells me it will always be hard to see an enemy or even where they are. And the sounds of shots being fired echo wildly all over the place due to so many walls and buildings. Is it on your street or two streets over? Two houses down or a whole block? Don't expect to be able to know where bad guys, even actively noisy and obvious bad guys, are. You WANT magnified optics, believe me. It can be the most chaotic and insanely hard to comprehend shit ever.
    Doesn't matter if you are the most accurate and fast shooter in the world, if you don't know where the fuck those bullets coming down on you are coming from you can't do shit. You're going to panic, hunker down somewhere, and maybe start blasting places you can see that they MIGHT be. It's going to suck, luck plays a big role, and you'll likely get lost in the shuffle. If you've got shooting, kit, and supplies down pat, work on orienteering and navigation. And STRONGLY consider finding a community to prepare with. Heavily armed loners who make it out of urban areas to the country are likely to get shot on sight.

    In urban combat in Kandahar and Helmand, we were caught in close ambushes 100 and in multiple times. We were also engaged more than 1 km out multiple times. It was nice being prepared for both. Having the capability to magnify while also having the capability to kick in doors with your rig is really the bread and butter of suburban and urban combat. However, there are use cases for red dot only setups. I would just typically recommend the person running that setup also have members within their group who have the capability to target identify at distance a the least. If you're alone in an urban environment, good luck.

    Ironically it's densely forested hills where you're going to wind up in sub 50 yard engagements. Foliage and terrain can really absorb sound, and so its entirely impossible to round or crest a hill and find yourself staring at someone in throwing distance that you didn't know was there. Plus even on flat ground, all the trees become a solid wall after a certain distance, depending on the forest.

    I want magnification not necessarily for long range, I want it for targets that are small and easily obscured by your sight or for targets with little contrast between them and their background. Another option is a killflash. A poor man's killflash is a piece of window screen secured over the lens of your optic. Focus past it and you'll be g2g. For red dot systems you can run a few strips of tape over the lens of your optic, leaving your dot itself uncovered. if you use it properly with both eyes open, it will still work fine.😊

    Most people forget the VERTICAL threat -response to it has to be trained into most people. Most US urban areas have high buildings and that vertical distance also matters. You can be 50 yards away from the building, but the threat may be another 75 yards up (real distance about 90 yards). Lots of cities are grid-based, meaning you have long, clear streets as fire lanes. Seriously, study the British WWII tactic of "block-busting". Most suburban areas more akin to operating in hilly terrain, and urban areas are like mountainous terrain.

Anybody can stand there and maneuver around some barrels shooting at paper. But in an actual event where people are shooting at each other. It’s a different story. The airsoft guns may have short ranges, but you’re actively battling a real person or team who can possible out maneuver and out smart you. I stopped shooting Limited division in 3 Gun, even at the local club that only has bay stages, max range 100 yards. Why? Because that club makes up for its lack of distance with smaller targets. Hitting a small target (i.e.: head sized) with just a red dot is a lot harder than with magnification. A flip magnifier gives you the ability to keep your red dot but get magnification when you need it. It's not a perfect solution, but what is?
    I also never understood the idea that you can't see a long ways inside of a city. Have you ever been to a city? They have these long, straight, unimpeded stretches of open space called "roads". They have lots of them, actually. Catty corner from my house is a park that's about 1/3 mile long. After that is a major road. Across that road is a lake. That lake is 1 mile long by about 5/8 mile wide, farther than I'd be confident in hitting anything.
    People also need to understand that in a WROL/SHTF urban scenario, you're not going to be seen or treated as a good guy if you're doing suppressive fire on the shitbag in your neighborhood. Launching dozens of rounds into your neighbors' houses and other property (to say nothing of the neighbors themselves) is going to make you more of a liability in their eyes than an asset, even if you do take out the bad guy. Think more like a hostage-rescue guy than a WWII infantryman.

      Another big point is that most of your targets probably won’t be man-sized. People that are shot at or are shooting at someone often have a tendency to take cover (crazy). Engaging a brightly covered silhouette at 300yards from the prone is much easier than a kneeling shoot at a partially obscured, low contrast target at 200.

    Really appreciate your content! As always a very interesting topic - one that gets underestimated quite often. The most heavy firefighting during a war takes place in urban areas. In sniperschool we prepared for engaging distances up to 600 Meters/Yards in urban war (for most european cities this works well, new-world chessboard alike settlements are a completely other mess!) LPVOs seem to be the most practical sight in such a scenario. But a point to think about is the magnification ratio. Although a 1-10x gives you great surveillance capability and flexibility it's more prone to malfunction if ill-treated than lets say a 1-4x. This is due to the moving parts and longer travel distance of the lens inside the tube. Unless I get hands on a really high quality optic i'd stick with less magnification ratio or even fixed magnification glasses supplemented with a fixed 10x or 15x monocular for obs (because those tend to get thrown around the most :S). To be able to cover CQC and be able to take longe range shots is quite hard without cutting corners - either work in a team with designated roles or carry two rifles. What are you guys thinking? Also about the ballistic effect of .223 at 600y?

      So I'm not too worried about durability. my longer range stuff it's niche enough that It's a acceptable trade off
      556 blows at 600 yards, but it's not useless by any means. Especially with the lack of higher care in these scenarios.

    • @Kross8761
      @Kross8761 2 года назад +2

      @@BrassFacts and the fact that we have access to ammunition that the military doesn't use (not that any 5.56 performs spectacularly at 600) but offerings like the Sierra TMK or Hornady ELD-M are capable of still expanding at velocities as low as 1300fps so while you're not getting stellar performance, you can still do a lot of damage if you put the bullet where it needs to go (and the bullets I mentioned also have the added benefit of being highly accurate match rounds making the job of hitting those shots easier.
      My general purpose rifle is a 13.7 with a 1-10 LPVO, a canted red dot, suppressor, and a weaponlight, and it's plenty capable of hitting targets accurately out to 500 with not much difficulty while still being pretty short if I do have to go indoors.
      I'm of the opinion that more magnification is almost always better if I can switch magnification easily via throw lever, because if I am making a difficult shot then I'm probably going to dial in as close as I can get, and even if I don't need it in a fight it functions as a scouting tool.

      This is exact same larping, this fallout apocalypse scenario is straight up impossible. There will always be some resemblance of states and militaries. Since he mentioned special kind of cottage, there's nothing civilian in civil war, if it starts, military will play major role and if it gets overstretched, they will recruit and forcibly conscript more men. By "they" I mean all belligerent sides. How do I know? Because that's how it always played out in history.
      So larp proudly! Be it airsoft, medieval, fantasy, fallout or the second civil war.

    Fact of the matter is if you’re getting or think you’re going to get engaged at 400+ yards you should think about breaking contact and leaving not trying to take long shots.
    The infantryman lives to close distance with and kill the enemy, and this has been done through histories in relatively close ranges.

    This was a great video. I think cqb is important though. Think about going into buildings for supplies, shelter, or moving through buildings and like back yards in order to conceal movements. Chances are that if I'm moving through a town in that kind of situation I'm going to do my best to not use streets because that's wide open and ambushes are much more likely. If do move through streets a grey man style of approach is probably going to be my go to, i.e. red dawn style grey man, normal clothes, no tactical gear, no extra gear I don't have to bring, pistols probably concealed, unless the dress code for the apocalypse is drastically different, either way dressing for the situation is important. One thing to point out though is urban is a very diverse term. Moving into my closest town for supplies or networking would probably look a lot like you described, however going to a more dense population center (or starting there) somewhere with more high rise buildings or just more dense buildings would look pretty different. Phoenix, salt lake city, and Las Vegas are all urban as well and yes they have their longer distances but they also have a lot more structures that create typical cqb environments. Which is why it's hard to set up one do it all rifle. I feel like it really depends on how long it's been too into the situation. The first week or two I'm probably best off with a pistol or something small and compact for cqb because I'm more likely to get into a fight at Wal-Mart over toliet paper or a gas station then I am to get into a long drawn out engament down a street. So that "Looney tunes" style of bumping into each other on a corner might happen. 2 weeks to 3 months will probably see gangs or neighborhoods that have formed gangs, in which case an ar that can engage multiple targets or provide suppressing fire might be handy, especially if moving a family or group. 3 months to a year will probably see more stabilization, solidified control over certain areas and some restoring of a type of order, either those gangs controlling a bigger area or what not, but it's the bigger more dense population centers that will still be more lawless, so more cqb and again, probably more grey man, though at this point in a lot of areas open carry will probably be more common but not the uber tacticool style, probably more just a gun on the hip or a long gun cross body carry with a hunting sling. We would probably also see a lot more check points and restriction of movements at this point probably by local militias. 1+ years and we would probably see a return to some kind of normal life, though it will probably look very different, unless it's something global like nuclear war then we would see local or regional governments (possibly we would see outside influence) formed people going to work (though maybe not in the same compacity) and then it's either going to be carrying under different capacity of a whatever the new laws would look like or back to grey man style of concealed carry. Also there is the not of training, most people who own firearms aren't training with with, so the criticism of most people don't train past 25 yards is applicable to the bad guys too. Possibly more so, the chances of someone springing an ambush at 2-300yrds is very unlikely, even with training and unless you are not in an urban area there really isn't a reason to shoot out that far. At that distance the likelihood is that they would completely miss or that you'd already be hit. Think more Viet cong style ambushes, relatively untrained militia group with the element of surprise conducting very close range ambushes. Yes it might be helpful while breaking contact to reach out at touch someone but at that point you're mostly out anyway. I love that you actually went through and measured distances but I think the scenario is unlikely even for an unlikely scenario like total societal collapse across the nation. Also for people who own guns according to pew research among all gun owners 72% own handguns, 62% own rifles, and 54% own shotguns, of people who only own one gun 62% own handguns, 22% own rifles, and 16% own shotguns (2017). Also urban people are half as likely to own a gun as suburban which are half as likely to own a gun as rural (pew research 2017). So the likelihood of running into someone in an urban area with a gun is already unlikely and on top of that it's most likely to be a pistol. Instead of getting into a long distance gun fight down a street it's much more likely to be mugged at close range (even in a shtf situation) so cqb is much more likely. Thank you for your time making these videos, even though we might not agree I appreciate the info you put out.

    New subscriber. Fantastic content! One small but important point I'd like to contribute is too many folks use LPVOs as little more than magnified red dots. The etched reticles aren't understood or even used. Dialing elevation with turrets are understood even less by the typical ar15 training community. I learned the long range game shooting PRS with a bolt Tikka 308 in matches out to 1000 yards. When I ventured back into the carbine run/gun world I realized how little my friends knew about all the things on thier LPVOs...cause they simply wanted 6x or 8X or 10x at 100 yds! I run a 3x magnifier on a 10.3 mk18 which I set up as a 0-300m gun. I have light reece and a mk12 for 300-600m. Again, great content man!

    Loving your videos, you're definitely one of the few reasonable people when it comes to talking about this sorta stuff. One thing I'd like to comment on though is consider holding onto your mags during reloads and putting the empty one back into your carrier. Not only will it extend the life of your magazines, but I also think it's generally a good idea to treat your magazines as well as the weapon as opposed to disposable (although I can't take credit for the idea, the military drilled it into me :p) because even for people who have a shit ton of mags, usually a lot of them have issues, hence why they bought new mags. So even in an actual gunfight you'll ideally want to hold onto the good mags you're using as you likely won't be able to recover them if you just drop them on the ground.
    Also if you do any tactical reloads, this allows you to keep the low magazines to be used later if you run out of full ones.
    If you want a good reload technique for doing this, the one I was taught in the military is very good. I don't know if it has a name, I tried a quick search for "Army rifle reload" and can't find it so I'll attempt to give and adequate description over text.
    Basically you tuck your elbow into your side with your elbow bent at 90 degrees and the rifle also rotated 90 degrees so that it's still pointed down range, but the magazine is pointing inside or across your body. You then take your forefinger and thumb and "pinch" the mag in your carrier with these two fingers (another protip, have your mags in your carrier so that the inner side of the curve is facing your shooting side. So as a lefty the tops of the mags in the carrier would point to your left shoulder). Place the new mag on top and perpendicular to the one in the rifle with the open end of the new magazine facing towards you. Again pinch the mag in the rifle with either your fore and middle finger or middle and ring finger. Remove the old magazine and rotate your hand and put the new magazine in and then return the old magazine to your carrier.
    Writing it out makes it seem way more complicated than it is, but it's not, it's incredibly simple and doesn't take long to get used to at all.
    Anyways, great videos keep it up!

    • @BrassFacts
      @BrassFacts  Год назад +2

      yeah I took tac loads when I need too, I'm well versed in the method. I do them occasionally on the channel.
      I'm of the school of thought that mags are disposable once depleted (in training I go back and get them later).
      I have enough mags that I will die before I burn through of them in any "real world" scenarios.
      Thanks for the input though. appreciate it.

      The military doesn’t always pick equipment because it’s the best application for the task. And LPVO’s are garbage. Jack of all trades, master of none. That is why guys also hang an offset red dot on their gun. Why add the weight, cost, and complexity of a red dot is the 1x on a LPVO was even remotely useful? And the exit pupil on a lot of 1-8’s isn’t very big. So, again, meh. At that point get a good 3-9 with an offset red dot and call it good. Something like the D-Evo from Leupold is the future. Or at least should be.

      "the military" has not officially moved to anything. The cutting edge $3000+ LPVOs that certain branches of the military are looking at have very little in common with those sub-$500 pieces of junk that most civilians are buying. Those things have little to no value in actual combat when compared to a quality red dot or holographic sight.

That said, it was the fact I was with a unit that had spent the last 18 months training together and had leaders who had been doing it for years that really counted as our edge. If you are alone, or your little crew doesn't have extensive training together, you ain't gonna make it. Especially since you won't have a helo on standby 5 minutes out to come casevac you if you go down. People need to know that in SHTF where any normal people have any chance of actually doing this sort of thing that if you go down, you will probably stay down.

    It has taken me a long time to get over my 1980s infantry training which was before all infantryman had optics and I was in the Army where we were told our main tactic was to 'find and fix' the enemy with shots that weren't necessarily hitting them and then having fire support from big weapons directed by our squad or platoon radios (individual soldiers didn't have radios that I remember) "finishing" them. Old person mentality can be a problem for sure. However, like most, I think cities after rule of law is gone will be death traps. Way too many "tangos" (I heard that in a movie:-). I suspect that if you are in an urban area the only sensible thing to do in WORL is GTFO (where your magnified optics will be even more useful.) I also wouldn't want to be walking around where there are 10 mile lines of sight in multiple directions either. This is not criticism of your choice of training grounds as they look like a wonderful place to train or just hike to me.

I got into LR rifle when I lived in AZ, and scopes were a must. Still can’t say I know what I’m doing, but I can hit relatively small targets at 500m with a decent AR on 10x from a very sold rest-supported bench or prone. My subdivision is still surrounded by rural terrain but getting developed at a rapid pace with virtually no straight line streets inside. If there was an an “a-pockeyclyps” or a breakdown otherwise, I red dots or irons would still be adequate for most of the block - 6x on an LVPO at the most.
