@@andrewlarson7895 I don't know. Boeing allegedly didn't listen to UA and KAL, which implored them to develop a longer-range 757 successor. Instead, Boeing proposed the 737 MAX 200, which doesn't have the range of the XLR. Meanwhile, greedy Boeing declined to improve the 757 because they wanted customers to purchase their 787s which was obviously foolish. After all, not all markets can support and/or sustain a large aircraft like the 787/A330/50. As an aside, I'd like to see the COMAC C919 and the Irkut (I could choke Putin) MC-21 play into the mix, breaking up the duopoly Boeing and Airbus have enjoyed for decades.
It wasn't a dumb decision though. I know what you mean, I love the 757 and hated to see its production end when it did. But remember it was an early 80's introduction, a truly great aircraft for its time. Its performance went unmatched, that is the reason it is still flown in large numbers at airlines like DAL and UAL. But, after 9/11 things changed in the industry and airlines were looking for more fuel efficient aircraft, like the 737NG and A320 family. It was all timing, and Boeing couldn't just re-engine the 757 like they have with the 737 and A320. Remember it was the airlines and customers that had such interest in the 737, looking for more fuel efficient aircraft to replace their aging fleets. The 757 order book and interest in it had all but dried up. If Boeing went the route of improving the 757, they would've cannibalized market share of its best selling 737. And who knows how much interest/orders would've gone to an improved 757.
