I think this is one of the best explanations on Mohr's circle I have found sofar. Both in books and online.

Hello Professor, this video has been really helpful for me. I have just begun studying advanced soil mechanics with no background whatsoever in civil engineering (I'm pursuing my masters in Environmental Engineering and need to study this subject for waste treatment design. I'm a mechanical engineer). I am subscribing to your chanel so that i can turn to your videos when I'm in doubt.

Can you elaborate on why the normal and shear stress acting on the plane is always located 2(theta) away by rotation about point O of the RM line? Thank you for the video!

  • @lloydwebb6200

With the orientation for the major and minor principle stresses @31:20, are they with respect to a horizontal Cartesian axis or the inclined plane at 30 degrees? I compute the rotation to the horizontal axis sigma which is 41.5 degrees in morh's circle (20.75) in real life but then I'm stuck on what to do to get to your answer, any help will be greatly appreciated!

    • @bonkoFL
      @bonkoFL 2 месяца назад

[Obviously the question was long ago, but still a good one for anyone looking at this now.] His answers are relative to horizontal. Your 20.75 deg is the amount the box would need to be rotated clockwise from its tilted starting position in order to counter the effect of shear stresses. Since the minor axis of the tilted box starts at 30deg, 30 - 20.75 = 9.25 deg relative to horizontal, while the major axis starts at 120deg, 120 - 20.75 = 99.25 deg relative to horizontal.

Whether through a field test....kindly explain

The principal stresses at a point are sigma1= 250MPa and sigma 2=120 MPa
    (a) Determine the (i) mean stress, (ii) differential stress, and (iii) deviatoric stress.
    (b) Using the Mohr circle below, what are the values of the normal and shear stresses acting on two planes
    whose normals are inclined at:
    (i) 0 degrees to the sigma 1 direction? What quantity does this point represent? Based on your calculations, do
these results make sense with the orientation of the plane relative to sigma1? Explain.
(ii) 45 degrees to the sigma1 direction? What quantity does sigma n at this point represent?
    (c) Using the Mohr circle below, what are the values of the normal and shear stresses acting on two planes
    with normals
    inclined at:
    (i) 60 degrees to sigma1 direction?
(ii) 90 degrees to sigma1 direction? What quantity does this point represent? Based on your calculations, do
these results make sense with the orientation of the plane relative to sigma1? Explain.
