Poland is Central Europe in every respect. Eastern Europe is primarily countries with Byzantine heritage (Orthodox Christianity). They are geographically located in the east of Europe but there are also differences in architecture, art and many other issues.
Population of Bytom is around 120k not 50k! For sure it's the city of contrasts. Nevertheless, it's great that you saw some renovated buildings. For the next time I would recommend seeing building of Court, Music school, Silesian Opera or renovated Train station! Also there is a one of a biggest climbing walls in Europe made on old mine area. Glad you visited the city!
I love Bytom. ❤❤❤ Back in 2001 I took my girlfrient there for a date. She loved it. I later bought an apartment there in the centre as an investment and it made me 100 percent profit and not to mention I had it let out to the local business for 7 years. It was great.
Thr building you called gothic (actually it's in Renaissance Revival style) is a custody building, built in 19th century. The 'creepy' people were probably waste pickers. They collect waste metal so they could sell it to the scrap yard. They're harmless. Worst they can do is a mess aroud your waste bin. The grave yard you visited was a Lutheran one. The second one that was closed is a Jewish grave yard. In general the architecture is mostly German as most of these buildings were built before WW2. That's when Bytom was within German borders.
We are not eastern Europe. We are the most central country in the whole European continent.
Ok...
this is not just slippery Poland, but the annexation of Poland by the Soviet Union
Just take a look at bloody map, I know you yanks are not very good at geography
