Truth to be told, I always thought Nintendo just didn't know what to do with DK, even before DKC1. After the arcade trilogy, the series stopped being relevant in the 80's. The only thing we got was an educational game and NES ports. Sometimes I imagine what DK would've been like without Rare. Nintendo would probably make every DK game like the 1994 GB game (with the same character design) or only include him in Mario Kart and sports games. But then came Rare and change everything. Rare, and despite being a foreign/British third part developer, had so much creative freedom from Nintendo. Much like how Mario separated himself from the DK trilogy to start his own franchise, with own gameplay, character designs, lore, family, villains, etc... Rare did the same thing with DK. They gave him a friend, an entire clan of Kongs, a gf, an island, unique looking crocodile villains, a main crocodile villain, different design, unique gameplay and so much more. I seriously can't imagine DK series without Rare. In the 90's and early 2000's, they became the main dev for DK, the Sonic Team of DK. But then they left and Nintendo just didn't know what to do until Retro Studio stepped in. I thought to myself "finally, they found another dev to replace Rare". But I seriously have no idea what's going on. Is Nintendo not interested? Is Retro too busy making MP4? Who knows..
I wouldn't say DK doesn't have an identity. Most people tie Donkey Kong to the Donkey Kong Country lore. That kind of took over the brand and is still prominent. This was why King K Rool was so well received for Smash Brothers. He is considered the true villain even though he hasn't really made a mainline appearance since DK64.
Donkey Kong under Rare and Retro will always be THE Donkey Kong for me. That's just how Donkey Kong is supposed to be. I'd even go as far as to say that Diddy's Kong Quest and Tropical Freeze are strong contenders for the greatest game ever made.
Pretty good retrospective of the Donkey Kong franchise overall! Also, I do agree that not all hope is lost, since Pikmin fans had to wait for Pikmin 4 to come out in a lot of years (until the game got released on July 21st of last year), so the DKC should continue to hold onto their hope, even if Nintendo seems to put the King of Swing in many Mario games in the future instead of giving the big ape his own spotlight more often. But at least Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and King K. Rool has appeared in SSB as playable fighters (seriously though, the King K Rool SSBU trailer is actually cool, and I seriously hope that he gets to come back in some way outside of Super Smash Bros, the DKC franchise is not the same without the Kremlings, Y’know?).
Been replaying Tropical Freeze to get a relook and WOW! It’s an amazing platformer with such creative and fun sequences that even rival Mario Wonder today. Awesome vid man, can’t wait for more!
Speaking of which, K. Rool was dressed up as a pilot in a scrapped gameboy Advance game called “Diddy Kong Pilot” (which is assumed to be a sequel to “Diddy Kong Racing” before the scrapped game has been changed into “Banjo Pilot” where the game has Banjo Kazooie characters instead of Donkey Kong Country characters). If you’re curious about the scrapped game, there’s videos with footage of Diddy Kong Pilot that can be found on RUclips.
@@donnae1899 I think it would be a unique idea, and since K. Rool has used some magic before (like becoming invisible for a little while and using teleportation for either himself or his crown in the Donkey Kong Country games), I can imagine that he can possibly use magic from his jeweled scepter, like trying to paralyze the current Kong you’re playing as by mummification (I meant it as just wrapping of who you’re playing as with linen) for a couple seconds as an example. His jeweled scepter could’ve either spawned the linen from thin air or he just found some linen on his way of wherever he’s at and decided to try to wrap it around as an attempt to keep the Kongs still before they can finish them. Who knows? Anyways, the ideas of K. Rool wearing different costumes (or “silly disguises” as Cranky likes to call them) are endless while they’re filled with a lot of great potential!
16:10 you can in fact play the game with just a regular controller without DK Bongos at all. It's how I did as a kid. Idk why this is such a common omission whenever Jungle Beat is brought up.
I'm not quite convinced that Nintendo decided to pull the plug on Donkey Kong. Don't forget that Retro Studios was working in something unknown long before they started to work in Metroid Prime 4, Nintendo also greenlit a 3D Donkey Kong game from Vicarius Visions but Activision pulled the plug on that shortly after the development started, there have been rumors for a few years that Nintendo is working in another Donkey Kong game. ...so, my guess is that DK had a bad streak because the projects that were planned for it gone wrong and got cancelled, but there is still a possibility that there is an ongoing project that didn't get cancelled.

Donkey Kong 64 is still great. I'm replaying it in 2024 and it's fun! The original DK Country was of course fantastic but my fond memories are mostly with 64. The collectathon style works really well today in a completionist era. The characters are well designed and have their own charms and abilities. It's not highly repetitive really as each character has different tasks to do. I'd be very pleased if they came out with a DK64 sequel but I highly doubt it at this point.
We gotta be patient, but man... Ten years is a long ass time, almost as long as that original hiatus from the arcade days up til SNES. Great vid, dude.

My idea for the ultimate Donkey Kong sequel AND prequel: DK/24 or Donkey Kong '24 Story: It's 2024 on DK Island. Funky Kong has a son named Ditto Kong who built a fancy 1920s style car which is also a time machine. King K Rool and Bowser make a plan to steal the time machine car to go back to 1924 New York City to trick the original DK who is now Cranky Kong pointlessly fight against Mario so that Bowser can take over the Mushroom Kingdom and that Cranky Kong never meets his wife Wrinkly Kong who back then was called Jazzy Kong so DK Jr the father of the current DK would never be born. They trick Cranky Kong by making him think Jumpman is his rival Mario. At the same time in 2024 Cranky Kong is dying of a broken heart and can't remember Wrinkly Kong so the Kongs need to travel back in time using another of Ditto Kong's fancy 1920s style car time machine and have current DK fight Mario in 1924 New York City while they get original DK aka Young Cranky Kong to go on a date with Jazzy Kong aka Young Wrinkly Kong. When the Kongs travel back in time they have to join the Brother Bears Gang and dress 1920s mobster style. The Brother Bears are from DKC3 and they were shopkeepers. But here they are notorious mob bosses and they are betting a lot of Bear Coins on whoever will win the Mario vs DK fight. The time machine car can fit up to 4 Kongs at a time and whichever Kong is driving it the time machine car will copy that Kong's own special ability. For example if you play as Tiny Kong you can make the car shrink. If you play as Kiddy Kong the car can bounce on water. Diddy Kong makes the car go faster. Donkey Kong makes the car stronger and many more. It turns out that King K Rool and Bowser were actually bugged by the real culprit: Stanley the Bug Man from Donkey Kong 3 Stanley the Bug Man steals the time machine car to travel to 1994 DK Island so that he can use his bug spray to turn all the insect bugs on DK Island into wire tapping bugs which turn the Kongs into his slaves so he can build a giant bug spray factory so he can take over the world in 2124. However DK Jr who here is Fedora Kong and his brother Uncle Kong arrive in two time machines of their own so now the Kongs, the Kremlings, Jumpman and the Koopa Troopas all join forces to stop Stanley the Bug Man. Sadly though after defeating Stanley the Bug Man it's too late for Cranky Kong and the Kongs have a funeral. But wait why is there jazzy swing music and why is Cranky Kong getting out of his coffin and dancing. Cranky Kong: Haha fooled ya. I was just taking a nap. Let's see how you did. Sometimes I wonder if Indie Devs make their games out of spite for the companies that made or published the games they grew up with. And I also wonder if Donkey Kong really is his own character, or if he's the son/grandson of the Arcade Donkey Kong. It's the textbook definition of an identity crisis.

Yeah I know it has been 10 years since we've gotten a mainline donkey Kong game what is the hold up? Nintendo should just outsource the dkc franchise hell I don't see why they can't just produce a game themselves in house.
this might be controversial but i think that the DK series lost all of its style as soon as donkey kong country returns released. its just a basic side scrolling platformer now. it doesnt push any boundaries or anything. its fine but DK used to break new ground time and time again and that made it feel super unique. i just find it so boring and not unique now. the dk country series is no different from a super mario game but with a donkey kong skin at this point.
The way the fans felt when donkey Kong 64 came out is how I felt after playing legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild for a while... this is not real Zelda! oh well here is hoping Nintendo takes Zelda away from that dev studio and gives the franchise to somebody else. echoes wisdom seems like more of a side quest but so far looks a lot more like the Zelda we want than the one some fans think we deserve.. 🤔

The Brother Bears are from DKC3 and they were shopkeepers. But here they are notorious mob bosses
and they are betting a lot of Bear Coins on whoever will win the Mario vs DK fight.
The time machine car can fit up to 4 Kongs at a time and whichever Kong is driving it the time machine car will copy that Kong's

bounce on water. Diddy Kong makes the car go faster. Donkey Kong makes the car stronger and many more.
It turns out that King K Rool and Bowser were actually bugged by the real culprit:
Stanley the Bug Man from Donkey Kong 3
Stanley the Bug Man steals the time machine car to travel to 1994 DK Island so that he can use his bug spray

Rool fans, just like Mario and Bowser gets the same treatment. Nintendo should've been making a Super Brand Newest DK Game right about now. K. Rool should've been in that New DK Game, and he could've been like a Evil Western Crocodile Boss. Kip, Kass, Kludge, Kalypso and Kopter should've been in that New DK Game with him.
Sometimes I wonder if Indie Devs make their games out of spite for the companies that made or published the games they grew up with. And I also wonder if Donkey Kong really is his own character, or if he's the son/grandson of the Arcade Donkey Kong. It's the textbook definition of an identity crisis.
Nintendo says Mario and Donkey Kong are frenemies
WHERE IS DK 64
Dk 64 makes sense back then, but it wouldn't work now a days.
@@orangeslash1667 I think collecting with different characters with different skills and mini games like DK64 would totally work today. People collect and record everything. How many shows they've seen, books read, game achievements... There are plenty of people who'd buy into that.
@@EvenstarSK I recommend Yooka-Laylee the Impossible Lair, and Kaze the Wild Masks, their based on DKC.
I've been semi-lucky enough to find some Donkey Kong arcade cabinets in the wild (so to speak). I say "semi-lucky" because EVERY cabinet I've ever found cuts out half the game!
They have levels 1 and 4, but the other levels are missing! Absolute garbage!
those are the US versions which reorder the levels
@@shyguy85 they weren't recorded, they were DELETED! Why do we always get screwed over?
Great video but I must say that as a life long general in the great kong army we the eternally patient fans of the big ape deserve a game better than DK as the second banana so to speak we and he deserve better hopefully videos like this will wake up Nintendo or should I say "Ninyendo" you guys want money then make a commitment to donkey kong and give the fans what they want and that is a DK that is a playable character in his own game and full length game no more b.s. Mario v dk
i've been coding alot and want to make a 2d game based on donkey kong. The problem is what different can I pull off with this besides it just being jumping through and over stuff.
No video game crash in Europe, only in North America.
Hey Jak, I just found that you had your own channel. I was going through watching old Jak and Lev vids. I thought yall were just done, how are yall?
Can’t help but fell the same way about Wario Land
Hello I have subscribed to your RUclips channel
hey its seth rogen. great video jak. cheers.
hey thanks seth real cool
@@Jakstalgia The problem is that Retro Studios is too busy with Metroid Prime 1 and 4.
I recommend Yooka-Laylee the Impossible Lair, and Kaze the Wild Masks, their based on DKC.
19:03 Perfect reaction.
Don't come after me but, I actually really liked jungle beat on the NGC
Out of all the chibi robo games, how would you rank them from worst to best?
Bring back DK64!!
Yeah I know it has been 10 years since we've gotten a mainline donkey Kong game what is the hold up? Nintendo should just outsource the dkc franchise hell I don't see why they can't just produce a game themselves in house.
this might be controversial but i think that the DK series lost all of its style as soon as donkey kong country returns released. its just a basic side scrolling platformer now. it doesnt push any boundaries or anything. its fine but DK used to break new ground time and time again and that made it feel super unique. i just find it so boring and not unique now. the dk country series is no different from a super mario game but with a donkey kong skin at this point.
the Donkey kong country games are it to me
Donkey Kong is alright I guess.
I don't care for the SNES games.
Returns and Freeze are kinda cool.
I love dk 64

Two things, first Jungle Beat with motion controls was the best DK game on Wii. Second I flipped when Cranky was announced as playable in DKCRTF.
Donkey Kong
the answer is Nintendo they are the problem
I recommend Yooka-Laylee the Impossible Lair, and Kaze the Wild Masks, their based on DKC.
