The OG of the modern tenor and bass trombone, Charlie took Jacobs's and Kleinhammer's concepts and came up with the most beautiful trombone sound since Dorsey and Pulis. Charlie is proof that, when you move your air well and go for great sound and beautiful phrasing, it beats "correct", "orthodox" playing (at least from a subjective, musical standpoint- and isn't that what art is ultimately about??) every time.
It's interesting how often he takes a breath. I wonder if he is over doing it in consideration of the people buzzing, or if that is how he would naturally play the etude.
Johnathan Curtman playing with a sound like that takes a ton of air. Also, he’s said in a few interviews that the biggest impact of him aging was his reduced air capacity(still amazing sound).he might have done it for the others but i believe that’s just how he plays it.
