Real person here - not an ebay employer!!! :) The best way to fix it is to become a top rated. Yes, you have to offer free return, but: 1. 100% bad and neutral feedback removes by ebay, 2. So easy to get help from ebay if needed (MUCH faster), 3. Small ebay discount on final fees, 4. You can give a partial refund to buyer if something comes back not right. Once I got back completely ruined item and refused to refund the buyer. Ebay gave me a full refund. Ebay takes care of you and the buyer if you a top rated. When I get a return once an while, I always think of all the benefits I am getting and stay calm.

ebay feedback removal is facilitated by AI. Take this into consideration the next time you contact them. Be sure to bring up how the feedback violates ebay policy and thus is eligible for removal. Bring up certain ebay policies, whether they actually apply to the feedback in question or not. If you do this correctly, the feedback will be removed in minutes.

When you use your VISA card at Walmart, Walmart pays a fee to their credit card processor based on the total amount of the sale (which includes sales tax). Some States do not collect sales tax on "shipping charges". I hope eBay is accounting for those States correctly. Some States do not collect sales tax on clothing. I hope eBay accounts for this when somebody sells a "wedding gown worn by Princess Diana".

I think some people in the comments are forgetting to subtract the shipping cost and sales tax from their final payout amount. Example: Total sale $80 but only got $54 payout. So they think they got charged $26 in fees but in reality they got charged normal fees but forgot they also paid shipping and taxes out of that $80. Does that make sense?

People complaining about fees should try running their own independent online store and see how they do. My family ran their own business for years and we spent much more time behind the scenes than actually selling. I’d gladly pay fees and do less accounting and marketing.

Sorry but that makes no sense. Accounting is not that hard. In fact that is the easiest part of running any business. What is hard is sourcing merchandise, handling massive deliveries, issues, returns, organizing / storing goods. None of which eBay does for you yet charges exorbitant fees as if they do. They can charge these fees because these are established monopolies and small independent stores can not complete with a company that has monopolized marketing.

At least if you have your own online store, there is no VeRO harassment, no censorship (can sell any legal product, including Dr Seuss books and Aunt Jemima cookbooks), and no throttling or shadowbanning or hiding listings, and no "promoted listings". We pay a high premium to eBay to sell and make money, but also to be abused. States have sales tax reporting and remittance threshold limits, a small store may never hit most of them, and there are services like TaxJar that can handle it for a price.

I wanted to add this to your video. Besides selling on eBay, I also have a small quilting business. In order to purchase large amounts of fabrics and supplies at a wholesale cost I have to have a state resale license (I live in Florida). When I sell a quilt to a fellow Florida resident, I must charge them the Florida sales tax of 7% and my county tax of an additional .5% (7.5%). I pay the collected taxes to Florida State Revenue Dept quarterly. One month I forgot to send in my taxes by one day and was penalized. For that infraction I was given a pass. When I went to pay the taxers for Q4 this past year I made a $10.00 error. No pass this time - I had to pay the additional $10.00 PLUS a $50 penalty! Even if you had NO sales and collected NO taxes in a quarter and fail to file you will be fined $50.00! What a nightmare it would be if I had to pay taxes to every state where I made a sale on eBay. I will gladly pay eBay to collect my taxes. Several years ago I rented a space in an antique mall. They took 10% of each sale which was ok, PLUS I had to pay rent. I had to pay rent even if I had no sales - so I never understand why people complain so much about eBay fees. Many years ago I owned a brick-n-motor store. There were days in the beginning there would be no customers - some days customers and no sales. My landlord didn't care- I still had to pay rent! It would be great if we didn't have to pay so much in eBay fees, but I would rather they do the paperwork than me!

Probably 10% of my store is promoted and my prices reflect that. On most items I don't promote. I just buy low, and sell on the low end of market value. Not low enough to change the game for other sellers, but I beat them by up to a dollar. If my item is in stellar condition, I don't lowball myself. Anyway, I rarely promote. They'd stick around even less time today because buyers are more savvy. They know it doesn't cost $99 to ship a pair of shoes(not yet anyway). The market would take care of these sellers because buyers don't like to feel like they're getting ripped off.
eBay could have addressed this issue in a number of ways. They chose the way that makes them more money from every seller, which is fine. They're in business to make as much money as they can. But let's not pretend it's something that it isn't. They didn't HAVE to address the issue in this way. They CHOSE to.

Ebay calculates seller fees on the gross. When a seller passes on the reduced shipping rate to the buyer the gross paid is lower, so Ebay actually makes LESS in fees.

I’ve never understood this Kevin, and I have probably watched more of your videos than anyone except maybe yourself 😝… You seem to want to downplay the number of viewer sales, as of having as few of those as possible “validates” you as a real reseller? You, and others, work very hard on your social/RUclips and this ABSOLUTELY accounts for many more sales than if you didn’t do those things... own it? But to say “I only had 5 viewer sales out of 23 today…” I think is disingenuous, because many sellers buy to support folks like you (Hairy Tornado, ADHDave, Cary, etc) but they DO NOT do this to be seen or acknowledged publicly… solely for support. So, maybe something like “we had at least 5 out of 23 viewer sales today…” would be much more accurate, to account for the many many viewers who are supporting you but are NOT doing it to receive any public acknowledgment??? You’ve all worked hard for this support, so I hope you’ll never downplay it and act (or allow others to act) like higher possible % of viewer sellers “invalidates” any of you.

When sellers start selling items for $2 and charge $200 for shipping, eBay is going to react (which was happening all the time). If you don't like giving eBay 10%, you simply DON"T understand the business. They bring millions of buyers to the table. This coming from a seller who has been blasting eBay for certain concerns I have for 20+ years. eBay is far from perfect but someone who thinks giving them 10-15% (if you use promoted lsiting, etc) simply doesn't get the business. Funny to hear some of the nonsense that people think out there. Cheers

I do not have a problem with paying a fee on sales tax because I do not want to be responsible for distributing that money to all the different states where sales are made. I do feel that paying fees on the shipping is really hurting my bottom line. On all my sales Ebay takes 35 to 40 Percent in fees. They charge 15% for jewelry and then promoted fees and I have not been able to figure out where the rest is being taken. Anyway my point is if the buyer pays $6 for calc shipping and ebay takes 35 % or 2.10 I am getting about $4.00 for the postage, THEN the ebay label costs an average of $4 each I am NOT saving anything and nothing towards my supply costs AT ALL. I am thinking I might be better off opting in to giving the buyer the discounted postage but adding a handling cost to cover my supply costs . I use Jewelry boxes so my supply costs are over $2 on each sale. The seller hub showa my fees are 35%. jewelry fee is 15% and promoted is 8 to 10% so I cannot figure out where the other 15% is taken from?? do you have any ideas that might help me figure that out. Thanks,Diane

We can all appreciate that e-commerce business are in it to make money for their shareholders. For those who do not upcharge on shipping the added Ebay feature is not an issue for these Sellers. However for those who do take advantage and overcharge on shipping, those will have an issue. Majority of Sellers are appreciative of having their items shown globally to millions of prospective buyers and we pay the Ebay fees inclusive. However, what Sellers have issue with is Ebay allowing scrupulous buyers ripping off the ethical Sellers with their fake returns, item switch and false negative feedback, the constant Ebay website technical issues (search, payment, combined shipping, listings disappear, drafts disappear, etc), the Buyer only focus, etc,. Ebay needs to do a better job to investigate the scam Buyers and not allow them to get away with ripping off the very good reputable long term Sellers and improve the constant technical issues at hand. Until then, many more Sellers and Buyers will leave the platform.

I understand the fees on shipping especially when you see items listed for $20 with a $200 shipping fee. I would be curious if fees on shipping would actually be needed on calculated shipping. I understand a seller can change the shipping method when they purchase the eBay provided label and could profit off of it. Rather than having the seller go through the shipping process, eBay keeps the calculated fee and then just sends a label to the seller. There isn't any adjustment unless you contact eBay to make those changes but any difference in the label cost is kept by eBay or they can make the internal choice of refunding the buyer the difference. This could help with fees as they aren't taken out of shipping costs and keeps shipping more honest. With the other option of free shipping or seller provided shipping, a fee can still be tacked on there. It would give an incentive to sellers use eBay shipping vs going out and looking elsewhere. Free shipping technically doesn't have fees anyways as it still applies to the total.

Sellers made Ebay what it is now. They feel like we are "fat" enough to be bled without it effectively hurting their business model. They have gotten to the point that they feel that they are the only game in town. If I could sell things locally I would and avoid the hassle of all of this....but that is not possible most of the time. Maybe at some time their actions will come back and bite them in their butts.

eBay charging fees on the shipping simply comes down to people used to scam the system and charge excessive amounts of shipping and lower down the cost of the item when they only charged fees on the cost of the item. They should not be charging fees on taxes though.

I think a couple extra bucks per sale is worth ebay taking care of all that.
This constant fee complaining is just ridiculous. It's not like they are hidden, everything is laid out to you before you start listing. Before jumping into things maybe they should do their research and educate themselves to have the most info to start your resell business. Seems pretty uncomplicated to me. If you don't like eBay's cut on their platform, sell somewhere else. I don't personally like the amount that eBay takes, but most of the "crap" my dad had hoarded for years is ONLY being sold on eBay, esp. the old video games. And I am not even a business. I am just trying to liquidate his stuff to help my mom pay for her living expenses, since the household's overall income went down after my dad unfortunately passed away. I am just grateful for buyers actually choosing to buy from me, since there are other choices (bigger, more efficient resellers) out there. Yeah, it breaks my heart to see my dad pay $50 for something, and I am lucky I can get $10 for it on eBay, and of course, after all the fees & taxes, my take home is maybe $4. But again, it is either get $4 to put toward the electricity bill or throw the item out. Though, I am not sure the amount of time and labor and supplies is making it worth it. The flexibility between three jobs has value to me, plus, selling so much stuff allows me to increase my ratings on eBay, since my acct was dormant for over a decade.

It's a given that any fees eBay can pass along to the sellers, they will. Fees on shipping became a thing because jerkwads ripped off eBay, selling a $100 item for $1 with $99 shipping. eBay at the time took no fees on shipping. So ever after, fees on shipping. (BTW, some states do not charge sales tax on shipping. Mine gouges for every penny they can. ) One thing that cheesed me off were fees on collected sales tax. I know they have their reasons, but it just grates since sellers don't get one dime of that money. Fair or not, it grates. like paying property taxes here when they won't fix my locally notoriously undermined street. (more of an obscacle course at this point)

I'm ok with fees on the taxes. Ebay does alot for selllers in tracking and submitting taxes for us. I think if sellers pass on the shipping discount to the buyers than fees should NOT be on shipping. If we pass on the discount then we are getting hit with more fees on shipping money that is not ours. I'd love to pass on the discount, but I'm not going to pay more fees so no go for me. I'm sure there is a way for ebay to do this. They should have figured it out and offered it when they rolled out passing out disc shipping fees. Lower shipping fees do play a role in getting the sale. I think ebay dropped the ball on this one. Great video and always.

As a history teacher, I am surprised you didn't mention the atrocious "Wayfair" decision. Not that us "little people" can do anything about it (the Supreme Court usually gives the political machine what it wants, the constitution be damned), but this whole sales tax mess was started by the Supreme Court a few years ago and their unconstitutional ruling, reversing the long standing (and constitutionally correct) "Quill" ruling. I wouldn't feel so bad about the fees on out-of-state sales tax if it had some actual constitutional backing behind it, but it doesn't. It is the out-of-state buyer's responsibility, not eBay's or the sellers, to pay their sales/use tax. Whether the buyer does so or not is constitutionally irrelevant.
