Its.. sortof crazy that after all these years later, the only one I really watch now is AVGN on the odd occasion. The whole "angry gamer" thing really fizzled out with me after some time. Nowadays, I get my kicks with the likes of Scott The Woz, Caddicarus, or Somecallmejohnny.
Them kids of today will never know what a magical time the Angry Vidya Nerd vs Irate Gamer era was. I watched either a little because I cared more for the games than the people doing the "review", and honestly Chris has covered enough games that James didn't to warrant his channel's existence from that point of view. What I did watch the most however, was all the amazingly funny Irate Gamer parody channels like iSuck Gamer, and especially Third Rate Gamer, a true master of his craft.
I remember when UrinatingTree did angry video game reviews (The Fat Man Judgeth) around 2006 2008. At some point, he changed his style to be less yelling and was a little bit more sophisticated yet still with humor. Eventually, it died off and he wasn't really active until 2016 where nowadays, he's blown up with doing sports related content.
I'm glad someone else remembers Jedite1 i watched him that led me to my AVGN back in 2006 they both definitely inspired with my little channel lol also keep up the great work!
The first video from these type of RUclipsrs was actually Irate Gamer's SMB2 video back in the late 00s/early 10's. Only recently started watching AVGN in 2016 after it somehow passed me by for ages
i was there for all of them... I was first introduced to "angry reviewers" when I stumbled upon Spoony's video for Sewer Shark randomly one day and i laughed my ass off. I'm old...
God damn boy! This took me back man! I was like Holy Shit I remember that guy.... the Archfiend!! And he still uploads. Time to take a walk down memory lane!
I agree, but for different reasons. I honestly think covering notable AVGN fantards may also be a good topic, because there're substantial enough. I'm sorry, but the rose tinted sunglasses are off for me.
Funny thing is last I checked the Archfiend is still somewhat active. Makes pretty chill vlogs and stuff. I remember back in the 00s chatting with him a bit over stupid internet arguments about videogames and stuff
There are a metric fuckload more that werent mentioned, to say it was an outbreak would be too conservative He11sing920, BigAl2k6, Urinatingtree, Luizprower, Darknessthecurse, and such were some of the first channels that brought me to YT It still blows my damn mind knowing Emer's (He11sing) has been dead for 5 years. That shit is an eternity in internet time
The story of James Rolfe is almost a kind of Shakespearian-level of tragedy, and it's like a great work of literature; James is the man who sees off all of his enemies and obtains the keys to the kingdom. And then a couple of years later, it burns down around him; everything James thought he'd built and everything he had is gone. IMHO James is like Macbeth, and Ryan is Lady Macbeth.
I think if the Irate gamer had gone out with that video where he explains what got him started with video gaming reviews at the start of his career. then he would probably have been able to avoid all the negative attention he then received over the years ... For having been a copycat. he should also have had someone to check his facts when he does a review..because his videos are full of flaws. These two changes would have have helped him become better known for his content, and less for being an copycat that barely checks his facts.
It seems like the game review genre was what made RUclips what it is now, from Avgn game reviews to pewdiepie let’s plays to commentary channels with games in the background, watching someone play a game in a video was the pinnacle of ideas and entertainment on this site and I can’t see any other form of video topping it.
Absolutely phenomenal editorial. This took me back a solid fourteen years to binging AVGN, Nostalgia Critic, and Irate Gamer content feverishly. Really enjoyed the unbiased and respectful way in which you handled all of the many people and channels covered in this video.
I'm a huge AVGN fan. I started having a disconnect when he started putting the commercials before the nerd video. It's like a stage actor coming out without the makeup on and taking a bow before the stage play. You cannot believe the character performance after that. Does anybody else understand what I mean?
I have a hard time going back to a lot of this content, not so much because of things the creators have done, but how the style of these reviews is now used un-ironically.
tbh when i first watched James i thought he was a copy cat since i didn't know him until 2011 and at that point i was into Nostalgia Critic and the whole that guy with the glasses website. Little did i know that james is like the OG and i loved his videos since i discovered them. Had a blast watching those episodes, i usually don't laught a lot but oh boi i wept tears xD Great video!
The first person I've found was Jedite1. I was looking for help with beating DragonBall Z legacy of Goku and Jedite had a review on it. That video opened the door to all the other channels mentioned here. I still have fondness for Jedites videos, even though they are pretty bad if I take the nostalgia goggles off. He seems to have moved on and has a job now. He probably deleted his channel because he didn't want those videos to come back and haunt him as there were a lot of... Non-pc language that was used.
@@devindeel5830 also JonTron was the co-creator of Game Grumps in 2012, that's something I've seen a lot of people not know. The old Game Grumps days were pretty awesome.

13:25 - I talked with the creator of that Irate Gamer Documentary, @CommonNonsenseMedia, about the collab that Chris did with James. If you want to know what he thinks about it I can share it.
The quality of the technology in the old avgn videos is definitely worse but the production quality is better then anything being released on RUclips rn by a channel that’s ran by one person
I enjoyed watching AVGN and the fanboys doing parodies of AVGN. I’m a spoof person, and I did remakes and parodies of other GoAnimate and Vyond videos including my own series “MTN Gang”, and now, my own “Goldie” series which were parodies of “TheJoJuan4444’s” “Dylan” movies, and it has Goldie as the main character from “Goldie & Bear”, and it will be voiced by Pinkie Pie from “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” originally voiced by Andrea Libman, the same who did Fluttershy as the voice of Little Bo Peep. I have to keep making these movies.
thing to remember a lot of those old youtube channels were made by hobbyists and enthusiasts. The intention wasn't initially to make money a lot of the time, or even to go viral.
More of a straight game reviewer, anyone Remember Roo from Clanofthegraywolf? I feel like he was one of the first doing the super in depth reviews, and he was great.
jontron and scott the woz seemed to come out on top. I honestly can't see the appeal in scott the woz. I find him cringe rather than funny. but I heard ppl say that about jontron, so I guess that's where my sense of humor relates to. but scott?... I just dont get what stands him apart from anyone else doing a well produced retro review
Hi, great video. I have a small nit-pick I need to say. I don't think you can call GameGrumps pioneers of let's plays. Pioneer means to be amongst the first to do something. I have watched let's plays in the same form as GameGrumps since at least 2007, which is 5 years before GameGrumps began. Mind you, I'm a fan of GameGrumps. I actually remember the video Jon and Arin posted on their channels that said, "New Channel Game Grumps!" and remember thinking, "Oh god, you guys are also doing let's plays now...". I still watch the channel here and there and have enjoyed it throughout the years.

Lmao no way your wife is satisfied.
Same, even if I don't enjoy the episode as much.
7:06 No matter how much time goes forwards, the words "I may not be on RUclips much longer" remain constant.
Its.. sortof crazy that after all these years later, the only one I really watch now is AVGN on the odd occasion.
I'm old...
Aqualung wasn’t really a angry gamer or AVGN ripoff
He was just way too calm
God damn boy! This took me back man!
I was like Holy Shit I remember that guy.... the Archfiend!! And he still uploads. Time to take a walk down memory lane!
The "Angry Gamer" concept was a thing before RUclips and AVGN.
SSFF is one of my favorite gaming youtube channels tbh. Always has been even way back when he did stuff like the Journey to Silius review
I have no doubt that Spoony could still be thriving today if he kept his shit together. It's sad to see what he eventually became.
Spoony could've been labelled as one of the all-time greats of RUclips alongside AVGN if he had kept his head on straight and kept his cool.
The Irate Gamer parodies like Third Rate Gamer, Save State Gamer etc might be a good video topic
I agree, but for different reasons. I honestly think covering notable AVGN fantards may also be a good topic, because there're substantial enough. I'm sorry, but the rose tinted sunglasses are off for me.
Spoony was one of the biggest L's we lost from early youtube.
I always liked how the happy nerd became his own character over the time now he doing stop skeletons from fighting
Not gonna lie, I was one of those copy cats. Look up a video called Funny World of Warcraft moment. It's the one from like 15 years ago. Lol.
Funny thing is last I checked the Archfiend is still somewhat active. Makes pretty chill vlogs and stuff.
I remember back in the 00s chatting with him a bit over stupid internet arguments about videogames and stuff
There are a metric fuckload more that werent mentioned, to say it was an outbreak would be too conservative
He11sing920, BigAl2k6, Urinatingtree, Luizprower, Darknessthecurse, and such were some of the first channels that brought me to YT
It still blows my damn mind knowing Emer's (He11sing) has been dead for 5 years. That shit is an eternity in internet time
AVGN should go drag queen and then irate gamer too just to rip him off
Wow, I remember watching your old reviews back in the day, like, damn, it reminds me a lot of AVGN.
IMHO James is like Macbeth, and Ryan is Lady Macbeth.
beacuse he let it go on fire,he saw it starting but he didn't have the time to stop it beacuse of "muh kids"
Exactly.
@@somo4227 dude you seriously need to go outside
I think if the Irate gamer had gone out with that video where he explains what got him started with video gaming reviews at the start of his career.
then he would probably have been able to avoid all the negative attention he then received over the years ... For having been a copycat.
he should also have had someone to check his facts when he does a review..because his videos are full of flaws.
These two changes would have have helped him become better known for his content, and less for being an copycat that barely checks his facts.
Still miss Spoony while derivative I still found it very entertaining.
I love your channel jargon, I'll probably binge ur vids soon
It seems like the game review genre was what made RUclips what it is now, from Avgn game reviews to pewdiepie let’s plays to commentary channels with games in the background, watching someone play a game in a video was the pinnacle of ideas and entertainment on this site and I can’t see any other form of video topping it.
How are you going to leave Angry Joe out of this???
He is the Game Dude, he is so rude
He flees the country when his court date is due
What makes me feel really old is that in 2006 I was 22 years old, I've been an adult through all of these eras 😔
Absolutely phenomenal editorial. This took me back a solid fourteen years to binging AVGN, Nostalgia Critic, and Irate Gamer content feverishly. Really enjoyed the unbiased and respectful way in which you handled all of the many people and channels covered in this video.
wait, Stop Skeletons was The Happy nerd? Ha ha... I really haven't been paying attention. That is very amusing.
I'm a huge AVGN fan. I started having a disconnect when he started putting the commercials before the nerd video. It's like a stage actor coming out without the makeup on and taking a bow before the stage play. You cannot believe the character performance after that. Does anybody else understand what I mean?
the game dude sure is an interesting person
i'm pretty sure he made a second channel named GameDudeOfficial (later renamed to GDO) which is still up
@@jamalgordon8883 he used to live on Canada you mean lol
@@jamalgordon8883 in Mexico to flee his court date
Great video, though I wish you had brought up IGSRJ.
I have a hard time going back to a lot of this content, not so much because of things the creators have done, but how the style of these reviews is now used un-ironically.
16:21 Agulung isn’t really an AVGN clone although he did make references and did review some of AVGN games
15:49 I miss Stanburdman, wish he'd come back :(
tbh when i first watched James i thought he was a copy cat since i didn't know him until 2011 and at that point i was into Nostalgia Critic and the whole that guy with the glasses website.
Little did i know that james is like the OG and i loved his videos since i discovered them.
Had a blast watching those episodes, i usually don't laught a lot but oh boi i wept tears xD
Great video!
Armake21, The SpoonyOne and AVGN were my childhood heroes on youtube been watching them since 2006
James, Chris Bores and Jon Jafari are the only men left standing.
Holy crap, I did not know StopSkeletonsFromFighting was making content way back. That's amazing.
He's og RUclips
I'm shocked their was no mention of silent rob
I just learned uncle dereks origin story. My life is complete. Great video man.
You didn't know he was the HVGN for seven years? lol
@@xenos_n. nope didn’t start watching him till a year ago lol
@@devindeel5830 also JonTron was the co-creator of Game Grumps in 2012, that's something I've seen a lot of people not know. The old Game Grumps days were pretty awesome.
@@xenos_n. that I did know as I’ve been a job Tron fan since like his tenth upload but still fun fact regardless :)
Man i loved most of these youtubers in high school but time is really rough on a lot of these guys how many have been banned or quitted or even went insane or vanished.
i wonder if one day ill be one of the film reviewing greats.
James will always have a place among the kings in my heart
There's a difference between copying and having the same idea as someone. Sometimes 2 people both have the same great idea but when they use the same exact phrases...
Nice video👍
Any video that has Spoony in it becomes a video about Spoony.
More of a straight game reviewer, anyone Remember Roo from Clanofthegraywolf? I feel like he was one of the first doing the super in depth reviews, and he was great.
movie reviews and nostalgia critic could be a whole other vid.
Have you watched angry joe show
Anyone know what happened to deafgamer and where i can see his videos?
you forgot Square Eyed Jak
RIP armake21
Angry reviewer type videos still go hard, i don't care what anyone says
they dont
ep 200 STARTS with a sponsorship and it is almost just a clip show
part 2 of ep 200 was mediocre, close to good
part three of ep 200 is shit
feel free to screenshot
jontron and scott the woz seemed to come out on top. I honestly can't see the appeal in scott the woz. I mean... his videos are produced well, great content and information... but I just can't stand him.
