Whiskey blows my mind how everything is almost blueprint yet Soo many flavours. It's all about that Barrell...yet every other step can change things...I thought it was much simpler...thanks to you guys and well STILL IT. without him I wouldn't be here.
My favorite combo is savory, salty, sweet and chocolate notes with peat such as the Bunnahabhain Moine Olorroso Single Malts. It sounds like the Westland Garryana hits also those notes but without the peat. FYI, both John and Lazarus are referred to as "the one Jesus loved" or the “beloved disciple” (John 11:36).
7:46 That's what I've been saying. I'd rather buy whiskey that had some variances between batches and some uniqueness than have it be doctored up in strange ways for consistency.
Actually Garryana oak is used in quite a few whiskeys up here in the NW. There is only one barrel maker, south of Portland the story is interesting. But all of Eastside's distilling whiskeys, some of Mcminnimans distilling, and Trails end bourbon are a few that come to mind.
Because of this channel I've been drinking more whiskey than ever before. As I just don't get wasted like I did in my 20s. Now 31 I'm starting to enjoy what's in my glass. Just bought Glenlivet 15 and yes I can really taste banana bread.
The Garryana wood is protected and can't be harvested until nature falls the trees and then you have to have a gov't agent with you to determine it was natural, hence the rarity of the wood to be available to craft the casks. That blah blah aside, I totally agree with Rex and his passion for this bottle, just amazing! So happy you had a chance to review and share your thoughts!
That may be true is some areas around Puget Sound, but it is not true in Oregon. Rogue for example is making their own barrels from Garry oak grown near Newport, OR.
Y’all need to make a trip out here to Seattle and do an event at Westland. A symposium or something. The Balcones guys were there doing something similar for their Peat Week, but I unfortunately couldn’t go.
Garryana is magical stuff, indeed! I was lucky enough to get to taste it at Distill America XI, and was transfixed. I can't wait until this year's version comes out. Hopefully my Total Wine will get it...
Have you guys ever sampled or reviewed South African Whiskey? I would love to see a review on Baines! Love the channel. My collection is growing steadily.
I had an earlier Spirit Hound single malt bottling and it was brown sugar all the way, simple but pleasant. They also make gin and stuff I haven't tried yet.
Westland sources their peated barley from highland, so it would be more like Balvenie and less Islay peat. But in a couple of years they will have a Washington peat smoked Washington grown barley.
I'm not a huge fan of the various Islay cults... but Bull Run and Westland make me want to start a NW Whiskey Cult... (and McCarthy's, and Westward, and so many others)
Westland cannot even cut down down this species of native oak since it is protected , they are paying experts to source mislabeled stock of "cedar" just to make new cooperage. In a way it is like Japanese Mizunara oak but luckly doesn't need 20 years of aging to make the desired effect. It is a really awesome whisky from a great distillery and I highly recommend anyone that can to take the distillery tour to do so. Cheers
I doubt this. Particular trees inside city limits or protected areas might be off limits, but Oregon Oak in general is plentiful. Because it warps more than other oaks it usually isnt used for more than firewood, but Westland shouldn't have any trouble buying barrel staves since it is being used for wine barrels.
You cannot cut down Garry Oak, it has to fall down naturally. You can look it up. In 2016 they produced 2500 bottles, in 2017 they did 2600, 2018 they did 1638. Their supply ran so low they couldnt replicate as much.
New subscriber here! I saw a few earlier episodes where they have their own whisky now! I really want to buy a bottle but I’m having a very hard time finding any information on it. I’m in Dallas. Can anyone help?
yup... That's what happens when there's only 1600 bottles of a good whisky. *shrugs*... then again, even their base entry level standard bottles are around $70
I am sure there are comments already correcting Rex but I will say it anyways. Rex, the book of the Gospel according to John is actually written by a different John. None of the books of the Gospel are written by anyone who knew Jesus.
I feel that our Mooch has not been exemplifying his skills properly in recent days. The # of whisk(e)y's being consumed is down to a near disappointing level. My heart is saddened.

P.s. our bars are open lol doubt that's a good idea but our population is tiny compared to most...idk...
Bingo, there it is. Happy Thursday everyone.
Garryana Oak is also known as Oregon Oak #OregonPride

I believe Eastside Distilling in Oregon is using Oregon White Oak as well. Probably was doing it first. Oregon!
It is definitely an Oregon thing now. Bull Run and Burnside Distilling use garryana too, but McCarthy's was probably first.
$150 for the Westland in MI.
i was certain rex was gonna say "if you steal, you RUN OFF WITH THIS BOTTLE OF WESTLAND!" and book it off screen...
So did Rex feel the rain in Africa?
7:46 That's what I've been saying. I'd rather buy whiskey that had some variances between batches and some uniqueness than have it be doctored up in strange ways for consistency.
If you are lucky enough to find the 16, 17, 18 of westland, they are all incredibly different.
Wow so much talk about the whisky this video! And a lot of it coming from Rex! I'm thoroughly impressed.

Did you guys get any vanilla sugar in this one? I got quite a bit in the Edition 4 that just came out.
Westland is hands down my favorite American whiskey I’ve ever tried. I haven’t tried this one yet, but when I find it I’m buying the store out
Will be going to Seattle next month will hopefully get to tour the Westland distillery

I'm so tempted to splurge on that expensive Garyana after watching you guys talk about it... Would be my most expensive $/year of aged whisky yet.

Pretty sure something is wrong with RUclips. None of the recently uploaded videos in my subscription are available.
Same with mine
That bottle though, with the liqour looking reddish as well. I want one.

Only Daniel would be a Milk Somm

And so will your group of friends expand for some reason

Sure - RUclips Issue... Sure

Adam Farnsworth I’ll join, does it come with a T-shirt
@@RydersCove Not a shirt, but your fez is in the mail!
Adam Farnsworth even better
um video unavailable?
Go home RUclips, you're drunk. The first video didn't work right away for me, then after about 10 mins it did. Now the new one doesn't work for me.
There IS a scotch that hits this combination. In fact, it's SO Scottish. It's call Edradour The Caledonia.
I was smart enough to buy 3 of each edition of Garryana. 2016 had the most peat, 2017 and no peat, and 2018 was right in the middle
Try Spirit Hound barrels 89 or 101 if you get a chance - some of the best ones yet!
Someone please make a GIF of that eyebrow action! 😂😂😂
Is there a difference between Westland garryana and Westland Peated Single Malt?
Yayy Spirit Hound!! A good distillery only 15 minutes from my house.
Spirit Hound is really really great. It's a necessary stop on the way to Estes Park.
JUST saw the Garryana at the local spirit shop. 🤯
👍
What's the difference between a Patriot Saint and a Magnificent Bastard?
@@scottbuzby528 oh I see, thank you
Daniel, the plural of genus is genera. Sincerely, a scientist! :p

I think bottles are only available at the distillery. They dont have enough volume yet to support distribution.
contentioushackery well I want to take me girl out to Austin and just wondered where the distillery was and if they would have bottles there!
Google Crowded Barrel whisky company. It is west of downtown Austin, towards Dripping Springs.

Omg Daniel’s eyebrows
Garryana was unsurprisingly out of stock when I was there in July.
Umm 2nd go i guess
Some how. Not sure how. I missed this video and the Westland kept coming up and I was like what the hell are they talking about lol. I now know.
Rex: Steal that bottle of Westland Garryana from the vault and start your own secret stash.... ((insert evil laughter here)) you’re welcome
AWW isn't that cute, Rex finally hit puberty with that high pitched patron saint intro.
thought he might have got something caught in a zipper
Blend one up! What would get you close? Westland that is.
Garryana is quite expensive - $160, before tax. Same as Glendronach 18
yup... That's what happens when there's only 1600 bottles of a good whisky. *shrugs*... then again, even their base entry level standard bottles are around $70
I tried their standard line, good, but you right $70 is quite expensive and for me 18YO scotch is more cost justified
Trippy
I had to click and refresh like 20 times just to watch this, damn you RUclips
That sound of Red it wasn't human!!!
Spirit Hound is great. They'll serve you a flight from several barrels if you visit the distillery in Lyons (like 'lions')
Just keep drinking, just keep drinking, the bad sower smell will go away 😄

Westland whiskey yum yum
What happened?
I get so happy when Rex gets excited over an awesome whiskey..........in totally platonic way.
Two in one
What happened I was first on the last one!!! Lol
Talking a lot about nuts.
