It has been a long time since I‘ve read Cannery Row, but I enjoyed it so much. Steinbeck certainly is one of my favorite American writers, too. My son adored the “medieval rodents” of Redwall back when he was young. We’ll have to listen to this together next time he’s home!
I've never read Cannery Row but I think I'd enjoy it. I've always heard Brian Jacques pronounced "Jakes." Sounds like it's time for a Redwall revival! One time in the 90s when I taught sixth grade reading, a student brought his real cat, wearing a costume and wielding a foil wrapped spatula, as part of a Redwall book report!
I also love Steinbeck! Just finished reading Travels with Charley in search of America!❤ My favorite is East of Eden so far but I haven't read The grapes of wrath yet...
Another very enjoyable video. Thank you. In my neck of the woods, one local independent bookstore closed in January and recently, so did another. I live in a remote area, so it’s an hour or so to the nearest bookstores. Luckily, we have our libraries.
Hi Kim, I'm sorry the bookstore is closing. I'm fearful for the future of reading in the coming generations. I read "The Grapes of Wrath" many years ago and Cannery Row sounds familiar. I either read it or watched the movie if there was a movie. I want to restart reading the Torah. It helped me so much when I read before bed. I've been having a stressful month. Aloha friend.
Great video. Thanks for sharing about Mark. Great book of the Bible. 🥰 There was a bookstore similar to what you’ve described near me. The owner was a widow. She was open on Fridays. She was 85 when she chose to close the store. It was understandable, but heartbreaking. Now, the closest bookstore is 2.5 hours away. What is wrong with ppl and real bookstores (not the big-box)? Don’t they realize how close to extinction quality bookstores are?
Hi Kim. You know, I led a parent-teacher book group on Haidt’s earlier book, and as you were talking about his new book on cellphones, I was thinking, “This sounds like the earlier book,” and then that’s exactly what you said. How disappointing. I was kind of looking forward to reading the cell phone book as I’ve observed so much that is really disturbing among students and clients. I know of several young girls who have had to transfer schools in high school because of social media bullying-really horrible stuff. I was thinking this book might add something to the discussion. But maybe not quite what I’m looking for? I’m a big Steinbeck fan too. You’re making me want to revisit his BIG books. Hope you’re doing well. I came home from Ireland really sick, and I’m just now getting back on my feet. Ugh.
@@BookChatWithPat8668 hi Pat! I hope you’re quickly on the mend and improving fast. ❤️ You’re right. There’s a better book out there. In the second half he talked about raising more independent kids but he lost me as a fan when his advice was universal for kids even though he lived in NYC and has opportunities and privileges most families don’t. It’s horrifying what’s happening to kids in schools and I’d love more thorough information to read.
Professor KIM: I'm only 280 miles away! I hope you find a few great books. Internet friend and Booktuber loves Brian Jacques and that's where I first heard of this author. I'm grateful for all the independent/used bookstores in Northern NJ that are no more than 40mins away. Great content.
That so sad about your local bookshop. I looked up Ariyon Bakare and he narrates The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents, the only Discworld Novel I haven't read. He really does have a great voice, and I've decided to listen to it next week. Thanks for the heads up.
Love your deft humor and thoughtful book recs! Always look forward to your videos. Here's a rec for you: a former clergyman, storyteller with family tie to C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien ... Mark Stibbe. I think you will love his latest RUclips video where he is interviewed about his book, Dead Man Talking.
Kim, have you watched The Chosen? It's fantastic. And have you read Mary, Called Magdalene by Margaret George? I'm about halfway through it and it's really good!
@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH The Chosen is a recently made drama series about the life of Jesus and his choosing of the disciples. It's very well made and I think you might like it. :)
I'm curious about the Bible audiobook...did you have a recording of just Mark or does it have the entire Bible? I've been looking for a good audiobook of it (I've read it several times, so I thought I'd listen to it this time) and I like Juliet Stevenson as a narrator.

I read Cannery Row this year, and I really liked it. I plan to read Sweet Thursday next year which is also set in Cannery Row.

Cannery Row is an all time favorite. Read it several times. Steinbeck is also an all time favorite. Good stuff. Enjoyed your Mark commentary was well.
