    I have to give Perry credit, having to deal with contradictions from the very games you’re hired to adapt isn’t easy.

      It's also why you ask for important details when you're adapting a game into a book, or you'll wind up making a character a clone when the people didn't plan on that.

    It’s always interesting to see novelizations versions of events vs the movie/game versions. Like in the Revenge of the Sith novelization, during the Sidious and Windu fight, all Anakin can see is the streaks of light their lightsabers are making since they are moving THAT fast. Obviously, that’s not possible with humans swinging glow sticks in a movie.

      Also Palpatine makes the case against the Jedi attempting to assassinate him all the more credible as he offers a recording which has him be framed as a confused, desperate old man who had done nothing wrong (even citing the fact that his being a Sith isn’t illegal) and cuts it off right before the fight starts. Also his hammy scream has an explanation in the book as it was an ability that stunned a few of the Jedi Masters.

    One thing about the Perry novels I like over Capcom canon is Jill being a former cat-burglar. In my head canon, after her father was caught, he told her to go straight but she initially refuses. She's caught during an attempt to work solo and Wesker offers her a position at STARS to avoid jail. Her background in Delta Force is either a cover story fabricated by Wesker or she did some boot-camp with Delta Force for training. At first she doesn't like being a cop but the two girls, her neighbors, she befriends only for them to die pushes her to embrace her role as a cop. At the Mansion, when Wesker reveals she was brought in just for extra combat data, she starts doubting herself as a cop, hence when Raccoon City starts to falls, she's torn between saving herself and wanting to save the people. Nikolai's antics convince her that she's meant to be a cop.

    videogame novel adaptations as a whole are a really funny concept to me... going from one media thats mostly audiovisual to one thats the extreme opposite of it. It's a noble attempt that honestly should be explored, explained and also discuss more often

    I always remember loving how Perry treated the Jill Sandwich line, because not only is it recognized as a bad joke to try and lighten the mood, but IIRC it's also framed as him acting awkwardly because he's worried about how Wesker's threatening his family if he doesn't help with Umbrella's plans.

    Perry did pretty well juggling the evolving canon, and I enjoyed most of her novels, though I wasn't a major fan of the 'Trent' character and how she tended to make each villain a 'control' freak even back in the day. For some characters it works, like Irons, she absolutely nailed the lunatic's character, but with Nicholai, he starts fine...then randomly goes nuts midway through the book. Her best work easily is Zero Hour I think as that novel fits so well with RE0's game while adding to it that it's downright seamless. After that is probably City of the Dead and the first half of Nemesis. The Umbrella Conspiracy has probably aged the worst due to all the continuity errors and you can tell she was still getting into her groove.

  • @DarkOverlord96
    @DarkOverlord96 Год назад +9

    Videogame novels have always been such a fascinating concept to me because, I dunno, there's something funny about the idea that companies are like "remember that fun game you played on your console? Well, now you can READ it and without pictures!," especially when a lot of the people who play those games around the time the novels are published are all kids or teens and also because they tend to have stories and concepts that are different from the games that are usually overlooked because they're only in those books and people are more focused on the games, comics or movies.
    Like, the fact that there's a *PRIMAL RAGE* novel is just kind of amazing that it exists at all.

    I think its funny that the timeline of Alpha's going after Bravo is way more realistic. I have had arguments about the effed up timeline of adding Zero and the fact that no police force with any kind of competence would wait A WHOLE DAY after losing contact with a team before going to find out what happened to them.

    I'm so happy you made a video about these books. I think they're underrated and deserve more recognition. Especially City of the Dead, it's one of my favorites, and I read it every so often. I can tell Perry struggled with adapting, and she did well and her best. I wish we got more like CVX instead of just CV, and RE4 would have been awesome. I wouldn't have cared much for RE5 and RE6, other than the book focusing on Jake and Sherry, but I would have loved so much to read a book on RE7 and Village.
