This movie is absolutely insane, left me feeling dread and it sucks because a lot of people will be turned off by the fact that its in Spanish but trust me the subtitles are enough to deal with because it’s absolutely worth the ride!
The biological aspect of the possession becomes more apparent if you understand spanish, more so if you're from this region of Argentina. One of the two words used to describe them is "encarnado", which can mean something close to "taking corporeal form" or more literally, "incarnate"; this also feels more visceral because "carne" is "meat". The other one is "embichado", a coloquialism usually meaning either "sick" or "infected", also frequently used to describe wounds with maggots in them (gruesome, I know).
@@seeeeeth1 Festering would be as accurate as rotten. The thing with ""embichado" is that it refers specifically to parasites or other worms using the subject as a host.
I came to comment exactly that lol. For the first couple of minutes once you start realizing that this is something that is quite regular in the universe of the movie I actually thought that it might be some sort of epidemic or disease being understood as supernatural by rural people before the movie actually confirms that it was demonic possession. I really liked how the movie plays with that.

Fun fact: I don't know if you noticed, but in the part where the autistic boy's father goes to the car to sleep with him, he finds a drawing made by the autistic boy that is clearly a drawing of the final scene when the possessed children and the demon They're walking into the sunset... It gives the impression that this boy already had some connection with this, as his brother says in the middle of the film that he keeps drawing pictures in his room...
In the drawing there is a red sun (son) hovering over a family of 5. In the school there is a shot of a paper cutout of a figure above a group of 6 holding hands. When the RED SON is birthed, he helms the group of children, all 7 of them marching through the field.

Easily one of the best horror of 2023. I felt like the movie was really grounded and believable. Usually watching a movie like this I just find it silly and obviously fictional that removes me from fully enjoying it. This is one of those movies where I felt like a silent protagonist in.
I was originally planning to watch The Exorcist a few nights ago, but after looking at reviews, it seemed pretty disappointing. Right below it's listing in the Regal app was this movie that I had never heard of, and I looked into it a tiny bit and only saw positive reviews. I was talking with friends over the weekend about horror movies, and I realized how much I've seen of the genre because of your videos, like this one. Thanks for all that you do! Can't wait to check this one out.
I was watching it with a girl today in the cinema and she told me "the dog smelled the evil, he's gonna bite the kid", and I was like: "I would hate that, but you are probably right". Then it was displayed in such a shocking way I covered my face and I usually don't, I love horror movies but something just got me here; in Argentina we hear stories of dogs biting kids so it was something that could def happen
Three people were present in the auditorium when I saw this excellent film. THREE - including me! It's FAR superior to the other movie released simultaneously. The more I think about it, the better it gets. I'd go out on a limb and give it an "A-." But I suspect that's a controversial rating!
A great horror movie! It has a great story and the best thing is that it doesn't rely on jump scare to carry the movie like most Hollywood horrors nowadays
This movie was fucking nuts. I'd love a deeper dive into the lore, but I love that they drop definitions on us that we can only try to deduce their meaning through the actions of those on film.
I love that we see the physical aspect of a possessed one only once at the begining of the film when it's in its final state, all bloated and putrid like a corpse, like if it's finally externalizing the evil within that has been festering for a long time, whereas at the start of possessing another host we see them like normal people, nothing special at all, until it's too late and they snap violently. That's the true beauty of this film, that at its core is like a metaphor that we don't know the evilness inside another person's soul until they show it through actions we never knew they were capable of.
I came here just because i need group therapy after watching this (it’s insanely good as well as in fn sane)-dude, can’t imagine seeing it alone in a closing theater. Are you OK? Very on point review
In the original language, they refer to he posessed as "enbichados" wich is a term used in the countryside in Argentina that alludes to an animal wound infefcted and with maggots, flies and insects.
I must see this! Terrified has pride of place in my DVD collection, and if this director has made anything as near as good, I know that I'm going to love it
It's funny you mentioned not eating while watching because I was finishing up a meal when I started the movie and as soon as it showed that "infected" person in bed, I immediately stopped eating, paused the movie, and decided to finish eating before watching anymore. There is some gnarly, and absolutely disgusting images in this film. Holy shit. It is without a doubt one of the best horror movies of the year.

This movie is a great addition to top best horror films....I hope many people watches it. It is genuine and crazy. Also very nice cinematography. I usually don't like typical horror but this was great and unpredictable and very well paced. Not a second of boringness. Last I watched was hereditary..which was crazy too... This again is Great addition to horror genre.
People, for those who dislike the decisions of the main character is because they did not understand the background of the same, is a subject that throughout his life made bad decisions. He is not a hero, anti-hero or the smartest person in his town, and he has to deal with something he doesn't know, you can't expect him to pull a Deus Ex Machina to solve everything. Watch it again, the movie is coherent from beginning to end.
I think it's coherent and I mostly liked the lore and set up but hated the main character. If the main character is just that dumb then I don't care if he lives or dies. He is a complete idiot that will end up getting himself and those around him killed and thus I don't care what happened to him. I was ok until the church seen, then I was like ok he can just die now cause that is where this is going.
Solid damn horror movie! It wasn’t exactly scary but there was a couple moments that were so disturbing that it made me feel like I just got infected by the evil. And I think that was the director’s intent
Great review as always Chris! Just watched it in a empty theater as well, had the same feelings as you. It’s a shame not many people will get to enjoy this movie with a limited release and the movie being in subtitles, but that being said, loved this movie!
Just saw it. I'm from Argentina and I couldn't be happier to see that my country is producing horror movies with this quality. Now I gotta watch Rugna's previous film "Terrified". Glad you liked it too, Chris!
ARGENTINA EL MEJOR PAIS DEL MUNDOOOO!! jajaj Thanks for reviewing this! A viewer from Argentina here. I agree with your analysis. This movie left me afraid of the dark (and my loved ones ) for quite some time. About the possession, in spanish they call it "encarnado" instead of "poseido" (witch actually translates as possessed). Encarnado is a word I believe was invented for the film, so even we didn't really know what was actually happening. I think they chose to do it this way to give the feeling countryside legends give, to sort of know about them but never really having seen them, and the certainty when you have something like that in front of your eyes. You could translate "encarnado" like "in the flesh". Thanks for supporting a movie from my country!
Thanks Chris. I tend to have an issue watching subtitled Horror and Action films So i was on the fence with this one, but once you said it was from the same people that made Terrified you've peaked my interest. (great opportunity to raise awareness on that one if you havent already). Admittedly I'll be watching the gorey parts thru my fingers but their depiction of evil is fresh and foreboding. I'm in. Thanks again.

Just saw this last night. And man this movie was creeping shocking and very good. It’s a shame there was only two people in the theater because I would’ve loved to hear/see what there reactions were during this movie. A few shocking things surprised me and one scene diffidently is going to stick with me 8nvolving an animal for a long while.
I feel like one of the jaw drop moments had to be the driving with the lights off scene (way more brutal than anything done to kids in Terrifier 3) but I can’t figure out exactly what number two is.
I feel that calling them "the posessed" is an issue generated by, quite frankly, a poor translation. In Spanish, originally, they're called "embichados", which means that they have a sort of parasitic "bug" in them, an illness, even. I feel like a better term for them would be "infected" or something of the sort.
Just watched it to close 2024 Halloween week. I was thrilled when I realized you reviewed it, proof that it's good material. It's a good movie, like Hereditary level. I'm very proud of my Argentine hermanos

I was talking with friends over the weekend about horror movies, and I realized how much I've seen of the genre because of your videos, like this one. Thanks for all that you do! Can't wait to check this one out.
How nice hearing you name my country in one of your reviews ❤🇦🇷
YAY! Best horror film of the year. I’m so glad you reviewed this!
@DontReadMyProfilePicture.57
Ok I won’t lol.
Talk to Me happened but I respect your opinion
MINOR SPOILERS
The dog scene made me gasp so loud. Something I’ve never done in a movie theater
I’m shocked Chris hasn’t reviewed Talk To Me.
He did a podcast with one of the directors of the movie I believe.
Three people were present in the auditorium when I saw this excellent film. THREE - including me! It's FAR superior to the other movie released simultaneously. The more I think about it, the better it gets. I'd go out on a limb and give it an "A-." But I suspect that's a controversial rating!
I’ve been following you since I dont know 8 9 years?! And I think you never react to an argentinian movie before, I love this 😊 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
High praise. Love how he tried to reframe from spoiling anything.
I liked how complex and completely indecipherable the whole device the lady creates against the monster is.
I have a mental image of Chris eating a sandwich while watching "Human Centipede"
I could eat through that, human centipede 2 on the other hand...
The scene in Terrified - the wife/girlfriend in the bathroom - is still one of the most difficult scenes for me to watch.
This film is easily my favorite horror movie of 2023.
I love how Chris is avoiding the elephant in the room that is Exorcist Believer
Doesn't want to piss any of the Hollywood people he has been rubbing elbows with.
I honestly thought he was referring to Talk 2 Me
@@elliotcrain2383 don't think talk to me was #1 box office last week
The dog and girl scence was crazy! I loved it
I came here just because i need group therapy after watching this (it’s insanely good as well as in fn sane)-dude, can’t imagine seeing it alone in a closing theater. Are you OK? Very on point review
Comentario en español:
increíble, que desde usa, reconozcan esta gran película de terror, muy original y muy argentina!
It’s so hard to believe I’ve been following you for so long. I’ve always loved your channel. Especially the specials and hilariously ( which I have missed ). Keep up the great work Chris. Super proud of your growth and your beautiful family.
You had me at “director of Terrified.”
Had no idea this was coming, but now I’m intimidated/keen.
So happy you enjoyed this movie! Thanks for talking about it 🥰
Just saw it . Definetly haven't been as shocked as I was with this movie for a long time
It's awful how big companies keep us away from good independent productions. But not this time.
This Argentinian film has balls, and I loved it! Damn it was really good :D
Wow one of best horror movies I’ve seen , ever I’m in love with it … originality !
Just saw this. Had no expectations at all, was extremely impressed.
I talked about this film on my channel and am so happy you reviewed it. Cannot wait to watch this film.
Thanx for taking the time in giving a look at the movies filmed in Latin America... we really appreciate that.
Leaving in that small bit of an outtake near the end is a mall detail I very much appreciate.
Foreign films should not be dismissed. In recent years I've been finding Spanish, Argentinian and Korean films contain some gems.
Graaande Chriss. Thank you for talking about this film. El cine Argentino todavia vive papaaa
Just saw it. I'm from Argentina and I couldn't be happier to see that my country is producing horror movies with this quality. Now I gotta watch Rugna's previous film "Terrified". Glad you liked it too, Chris!
Terrified was light years better than this one. Hope you like it. This one left me falling asleep lol
Really awesome movie. I am not Argentinean, I'm Chilean and I feel so proud of this movie coming from my neighbor country. Really blew me away!
Another one for the watchlist 🤘
This was the only movie that scared me to death, i never watched something like that before, this was totally a terrified experience
My local theater only has two showings of this movie and they’re both at night.
Same. I might need to leave the house at 10 pm to check this out.
Best horror movie of this year. Harrowing, gory and cruel. Even more shocking/scarier if You have kids. Brrrr
Thank you Chris for releasing this on my birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like how the world of the movie establishes that the rotter and how to handle them is not a mystery but is actually fairly common knowledge.
another day, another coronation of glory. VAMOS ARGENTINA CARAJO!
Love this review… tell me you hated the exorcist believer without telling me 🤭 will definitely be seeing when evil lurks
Latin American films never disappoint in the horror genre💪🏽
I've been following your content for many years Chris, it make me happy that you like it that much a movie from my country! The realease date here is in two weeks, I'll try to see it! Greetings from Buenos Aires!
That was a very classy Trojan horse negative review for The Exorcist: Believer 😅
I'm so glad you haven't changed your intro music for the Halloween Specials. It's awesome, props to whomever wrote it!!
Argentina has, in my opinion, the best film industry in Latin America, if you don't mind the subs, you'll find some amazing movies.
Two I strongly recommend are "El Secreto de Sus Ojos" and "Nueve Reinas" lml
Argentina 1985 also
And Wild Tales
I was one of 3 people watching this last Saturday night. Holy moly donut shop!!! What a doozy!!! It was great!
When Evil Lurks might be my favorite horror movie I’ve seen in the theater so far this year.
Same here! Had to friggin take a long longgg shower afterwards to wash off the mental grime I had ingested.. Speaking of grime.. Step father looked like Argentinian
Rick Grimes! 🤣
i dont comment as much but i just love that this film is getting the recognition that it deserves thanks to chris stuckmann and to all rewiers who are doing an excelent job on recomending the film
You can eat while watching Martyrs?
This review made me go see it yesterday.. what an awesome surprise.
