The shot from the original 1922 film reminded me of the fact that the scene where he stiffly stands straight up in the coffin was one of the most frightening scenes in movie history. They tried to reproduce it in "Fright Night" and it was just OK. In this film. he doesn't do that exactly, but there is a scene where he stands, which is just as horrifying because you see how big and inhuman he looks. It's like seeing a human monster for the first time. You won't see a bald head, Pointed ears, or sharp canine fangs in this film. The Vampire is what would happen if a man for some reason was an undead vampire who lived on the blood of others. He's not part bat, part wolf, or part rat. He's an evil creature the likes of which we have never seen before.
@@Valkonnen I love that you mentioned that scene! It’s so iconic! I’m kind of glad that they didn’t try to recreate that scene because I think we’d be disappointed. I found it to be much more a tragic romantic drama than a horror movie for most of the story. I wasn't scared for people but more just terribly sad for what was happening to these people and their lives and relationships. It was so unfair to the point that it didn't matter if it was monster.
@ Very astute observation my friend. More of a Frankenstein’s monster take except with the romance. Who was the real monster if I’m hearing you right? I’ll have to think on that one! Thanks for watching!

This is probably the most agreeable review for this film I've seen yet and I've been watching a shit ton since I first watched it Christmas night. Watch the movie a second time and maybe you'll agree that they actually do touch on her and Orlok's backstory a bit. It's the very first scene of the movie. It's not much but it does show how they first "meet"

Yeah, I really don't see it. She just looked like she was calling out into the void. If this was supposed to be them meeting with her being aware who it is, then the film failed to portray that.
Quit reaching…..Eggers really missed the mark on that point of the story….and it’s the single MOST important piece. The last part where Orlok deliberately chooses to remain feeding though he knew it would kill him was not convincing and ruins the movie, unfortunately. Eggers focused too much on the visuals as every reviewer seems to spend 90% of their time praising that piece, but Eggers completely forgot to sell us on why such an evil creature would kill itself after centuries of living for some tainted non-virgin blood. 🤷🏻♂️. There were no attributes of Ellen that would make you believe Orlok would die for her.
@ That’s the one thing that bothered me after. That he seemed dumb enough to not know what time it was after living hundreds of years of being aware. But, I still think it’s a visual, and cinematic masterpiece when it comes to film theory. Thanks for your comment!
Can’t be a masterpiece. Most important characters weren’t developed very well. The vicious/ruthless/evil creature Orlok intentionally chose to kill itself for some non-virgin tainted blood?? Nah. Eggers completely missed on this part, unfortunately. He did NOT sell/convince us why such a ferocious monster would just kill itself for another meal. This video/review glosses over that misstep like it’s minor, but it’s the most important part of the entire story.
I loved it! This movie very well may have had my favorite cinematography of all time. Like you pointed out, almost every single shot felt like an old painting that just draws you in; I couldn't look away. A friend of mine said he felt like it (and the rest of Eggers' catalogue) lacked a certain punch in terms of story telling, and I kind of agree with that. I don't think this movie is saying a whole lot, which for me is fine, but I've seen a lot of people online call this movie boring, and I think that's why. For me, just being sucked into the world was enough though. And I also did love the Shakespearean-esque tragedy that was the ending where Thomas realized too late he went to the wrong location, only to realize the count went to her instead. P.S. I don't care what anyone says, the mustache worked for me.
Haha! Love it! The mustache grew on me! I think a lot of people hated it because they wanted the old school look, but for me it represented the look of Romanian men of the time. Your friend is right, the story to me was too familiar because it's more or less the Dracula story we've all seen time, and time again, but it did have a few twists that made it interesting in the third act, and yes!!! The cinematography was incredible! The composition was near perfect, and it reminded me so much of cinematographer John Alcott's early work. Another great comment! Thank you!!
@ I really didn’t like the mustache, but I think it was supposed to represent Vlad the inspector for Dracula. I think. That’s the only thing that would make sense.
@Scene1Take1Roll1MovieRevie-m9f yes and on one hand it's a good design, the issue is it's just not Nosferatu. When u look at the OG design u instantly think oh Nosferatu, u look at this new design and u think oh some methhead hillbilly?
It should've been called Count Dracula the description that Knock gave him was accurate of him being a old man and Nosferatu was a rat, bat ugly evil vampire who cared about no body the movie was excellent, the makeup, actors, and effects will give you nightmares and the ship he attacked could've made it a 3 hour movie
I wanted to like this film more than any other this decade so far. Unfortunately, every scene made me painfully aware that I was watching a film. None of it really grabbed me and I struggle to believe most of the actors bought into the material themselves. I'm also so done with sexual abuse being used as character motivation and female characters being deified through victimization. The popcorn bucket (that now sits on my coffee table repurposed as an organizer) is unfortunately the best thing about this film. Kinda ironic: The most ungimmicky filmmaker alive today's biggest film to date (already a phrase that should send a shiver down the spine of every film fanatic) really only justifies its own existence by its gimmick.
You make some great points! Especially about the sexual abuse. That is something to think about. Thank you for your comments. Great stuff that you pointed out!
