Fernando Pessoa is my favorite poet and writer of all time. A few years ago when I was studying it for school, I almost cried reading him (I'm Portuguese). And believe me when I tell you that in Portuguese, his writing is even more beautiful and touching. Aw, I love him. He only published 1 book while he was alive and only got recognition after his death. He was a very complex person and it translates beautifully to his writing. He is most well known for creating "heteronyms" where he writes like he is other people. And he's amazing at that. My favorite one is Álvaro de Campos.
'The Book of Disquiet' has no beginning; has no end. It is in the air and around us. It's me, and it's you. It's everything, but it's also nothing. And precisely because it is also nothing, it is everything. What a beautiful edition, my god!!! 😭❤ PS: 'Blindness' is REALLY impressive! The "Taken" reference! Hahahha Liam Neeson would be proud 😂
I love the way you talk about books, I've never seen anyone talk about books the way that you do, I think it's really beautiful ❤ have a good day cutie :)
"She says 'hey it's me that girl from 5 years ago that you totally remember right' and he's like 'do you have a concussion?'" lmao you're the best 😂 Also I'm looking at that edition of The Book of Disquiet like 👀
Oooh The Martian is such a great book! I'm really not a huge fan of sci-fi, but I really enjoyed that one. Prepare to laugh out loud. The protagonist is delightfully witty.
Love how you're gettin into portuguese language literature. José Saramago, Fernando Pessoa and Machado de Assis are authors whose works are a world of their own! ''Essay on Blindness" is quite a tough ride, his prose style will leave you breathless, and the themes are not light. Extremely worth reading. Much love from Brazil :)
I read "Blidness" as a pre-teen and it scared the hell out of me. Re-read it a couple years ago and got spooked again - and was surprised that my parents, who had already read, it, were like "sure, kid, go read it, have fun" lmao. I hope you enjoy it!
I really really really love The Book of Disquiet, I really hope you like it. It's something I would love to collect different editions of because there's so many different versions of it. No-one's quite decided on what the "definitive" version should be. It was literally locked in a trunk for decades before they discovered it.
How I wish we had a bookstore or even a thrift book store where I live and didn't have to rely on the online services where it's taking a week to deliver one book😫 Also Emma you just made my TBR go longer than it already was with 119 books.
Start with _The Martian_ by Andy Weir! His 2nd book, _Artemis_ is also good but his brand new one _Project Hail Mary_ is really great! Be prepared for some science with your reading though!
BTW... I read the Kindle version of _Project Hail Mary_ but I've heard, because of plot, the audio version was really done well and is possibly even better than reading it in print!
omg its so crazy to me there is not one but TWO (2!!!) books by portuguese authors!!! we have such underrated works (underrated as in, by the public) and it makes me so happy to see a foreign booktuber talking about some of them (and a famous one at that!) 💗🧚🏻💚
The Martian was one of my favorite books i’ve read this year! Sometimes the science stuff is hard to follow but the humor and the voice made it impossible to put down for me, highly highly recommend
That «El fantasma de la ópera» is really fancy! Alianza is a really nice editorial house but also a really expensive one! I'm so glad that you now have it in your collection 💞
"The Book of Disquiet" is my ultimate favorite book! it's seriously the most beautiful thing in the world i'm Portuguese so I guess I'm biased but I'm sure you'll love It
Agree! I did think though that Artemis did have a little bit of a "men writing women" voice to it that made it so awkward to listen to as a woman at times.
ha ha, you mention John Le Carre's book about a guy who is a second secretary in the British Embassy. Before my husband and I were married, he was a THIRD secretary at the American Consulate in Dusseldorf, so hearing you mention that title brought back memories!
Here's the time stamps bcz I love Emma ♡(I'll complete them later lol) 1:38 snow and rose 2:58 girl in translation 4:30 the almanac of the dead 5:49 an in curable case of love 7:30 the brain that changes itself 8:45 calendar of wisdom 11:15 a small town in Germany
hey, I don't know if this will help, but you can find a lot of old books (written in the last century or earlier) on google books for free or only a couple of cents.
i just bought 4 books on Thriftbooks for just under $20. So far only 2 of them have arrived and they’re in rlly good condition. Maybe check it out if ur looking for a more affordable alternative. And it’s better for the environment lol
Used books are a wonder, depending on where you live and what’s open at the moment. Thrift stores can vary wildly in content and availability. Also, library sales. When it was open the University of Toronto library used to have weekly sales and the Vancouver Public Library has a huge annual sale (or did, anyways). Also remaindered books. I got a lot of books for $1 each at a table in the back room of a book store at a local mall when I was young.
The Martian is one of my favourite books, the comedy and almost mundane astronaut comfyness made it one of my most enjoyable reads, big recommend to read first. 21st century sci-fi with astronauts is a niche that needs more love. Artemis is completely different than the martian though for sure. Excited to see what you think :D
I was so excited when I saw Cleopatra-A Life!! It was one of my favourite books of 2020 and I can't wait for you to read it. And it's actually non fiction and tells her life from her Birth to death. A lot of her life is unclear for us now and there are some conflicting records but the author mentions that and explains what could've been true. Also for a non fiction the prose is just gorgeous!
I am so happy to see someone picking up Girl in Translation! I read that book for the first time as a teenager and have revisited it several times, there is just something so compelling about it 💌 The way language, otherness and belonging is explored in it has stuck with me
i recommend carefulness with the book of disquiet, it really packs a bunch of pessimism and hopelessnes, it is gorgeous, but gorgeous like watching dead flowers.
I just read “a pair of tickets” (one of the stories from The Joy Luck Club) and wrote an essay on it. Haven’t read the other women’s stories, but I love Amy’s writing and ability to make you understand and feel each character.
Definitely read The Martian before Artemis, most people found Artemis to be a significant let down after The Martian. Also, if you enjoy that work by Leslie Marmon Silko, her novel Ceremony is excellent, and a look into the PTSD and psyche of an indigenous veteran of World War 2, as well as things like the legacy of nuclearism (the nuclear industry heavily exploited indigenous laborers for uranium mining).
I have that same Book of Disquiet and yes it is gorgeous. It's so good to just dip into. Lord Dunsany is great too, if you like those check out his King of Elfland's Daughter, and Lud in the Mist by Hope Mirrlees.
Thank you so much for the manga recommendations Emmie. I'm wanting to read more manga and graphic novels this year. So far I've read Sheets, The Girl Who Married A Skull And Other African Stories and Stargazing. I'm really looking forward to Library Wars.📚❣

Every volume of Kitchen Princess has 2-4 recipes. Ready yourself for the volume 5 or 6? I forgot, it's been a while since the last time I finished reading the whole manga series. Somewhere in volume 4-6 is a bit or it's really heart breaking. So yeah. I also think you'd also like Fruits Basket, Akatsuki No Yona, Yumeiro Patissiere, and Detective P.I.
Aaah so happy you're reading Pessoa and Saramago ! They're two of my favourite Portuguese authors ! (Btw, in Portuguese, the "J" sounds like "Je" so it's José Saramago not Rosé Saramago 😁). Can't wait for your opinion on those 🥰
I always liked the fairytale Snow and Rose is based on! Their names in the German Grimm fairytales are Schneeweißchen and Rosenrot, which mean Little Snow White and As Red As A Rose :)
26:27 Samuel Beckett is a brilliant writer! I studied and wrote a thesis on Waiting for Godot and each time I re-read it, it was funnier than the last :D I need to delve into more of his works. I hope you like his trilogy :)

About the author of The Brain That Changes Itself: Developmental psychologist Diana Divecha (of Yale University) criticizes Doidge and The Brains Way of Healing for promoting unsupported ideas about neuroplasticity and for promoting discredited auditory treatments for autism. She says that "Doidge relies mainly upon near-miraculous anecdotes of recovery to support his claims", and that he cites outdated psychoanalysts. She argues that Doidge's mechanisms of change in his book are "vague" and do not meet scientific standards, writing: "Most of the treatments he describes rely on the brain's capacity to rewire and reorganize, activating “dormant” areas here, quieting “noise” there, building new connections through repeated micro-practices, sometimes in combination with traditional rehab. That terminology is too nonspecific to convince me."
ohh I live in the town that A Small Town in Germany is set in! I haven't read it, but the title is funny to me bc Bonn really does feel like quite a small town although it was actually the capital of Germany at the time the book was written xD
Snow and Rose was such an endearing, heartwarming little story, both the illustrations and the words. Although it takes place in several seasons, I read it in winter and that seemed to fit well. Maybe I'll reread it in another season and see if that changes the story. ;)
