I am Japanese. It's from Osaka. Only MAY and SATSUKI can see TOTORO. This movie was released in the 1980s, but the subtitle was Fairies Only Children Can See. Director Hayao Miyazaki made this film with the hope of encouraging children to respect nature. This movie was made because when you grow up, your mind becomes dirty and you lose the innocence you had when you were a child, and you take nature for granted and don't pay attention to nature, or you easily destroy nature. I've heard of it before. I'm sorry for the weird English because I use Google Translate.😄
Nice to see someone starting a reaction channel. From the Studio Ghibli vault, I would also recommend Kiki's Delivery Service. That one is also very sweet and a similar kind of slice of like anime film, while Princess Mononoke is quite epic.
For answering to your questions, the mom is in the hospital because she has tuberculosis (it's inspired by Miyazaki's mother who had it too). About the age, Satsuki is 10 and Mei is 4. Also, it's very common in Japan to take a bath with the family because it's a way to economise water : they wash themselves before taking a bath because that's not for washing themselves but for detend
@@SamuelPulkkinen-jp8ev me, I'm french but I didn't do it when I was a little girl. But I took my bath with my little sister and the girls of my parents' friends
There is a dub of this movie. I grew up watching this and it's one of my favorite Studio Ghibli films. Howl's Moving Castle is #1 for me And yes, they are birth sisters. And all the family stuff, including the bath scene and letting kids walk and run freely is the norm for Japan. Glad you enjoyed this one. As a fellow anime lover and cat person, consider me subscribed
Its not stated but the mother is probably in a tuberculosis ward. TB was once highly prevalent in Japan (still a problem, but at a lower rate) and Miyazaki's mother had it when he was a boy.
Back in January I took the train to London to watch the then-new stage adaptation of _My Neighbour Totoro_ that the Royal Shakespeare Company put on (and are doing again later on this year) at the Barbican Theatre. That, too, was really enjoyable and the puppets in it were mind-boggling. The executive producer of that production is none other than Joe Hisaishi, who composed the music for the original film (and yes, the stage adaptation does use music from this film version). Oh, and Ghibli is pronounced "jib-lee" (ジブリ - "jiburi"). There have indeed been English-language dubs of this. _Grave of the Fireflies_ is connected by it also being a Studio Ghibli production, but the director of that was the other Ghibli founding member: Isao Takahata (who sadly died in 2018).
Lovely reaction and start of your channel! Your cat also seems really sweet! When it comes to Ghibli I don't think there's a single "bad/wrong" choice regarding their catalogue as it's all splendid! In different ways, to different degrees, but all of their films are a true testament of love and mastery of craft! The animation is always stunning, the scores stirring, the stories deeply human, heartfelt, meaningful, hopeful and touching. Since you've seen a few already and mentioned others you mean (and totally should) watch, I'd also highly recommend "Whisper of the Heart", "Laputa - Castle in the Sky", "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", "The Wind Rises", and "From Up on Poppy Hill". Oh, and absolutely keep with the japanese audio for all of them! The voice actors are spectacular and I don't feel any of the dubs really capture the true spirit of the characters and the narrative and do them justice as the originals do. I subscribed and wish you all the best of luck with your channel! Cheerio!
I've had numerous opportunities to watch this movie from the past until now, and it's interesting how my perspective while watching it has changed between when I was little and now as a parent. btw, how about watching an anime film "Your Name" (2016)? I think people will discover your channel, and you'll have 10K+ views with it sooner or later. They will watch this video too.
Glad to see you're enjoying Studio Ghibli. They're all so good. You will love Kiki's Delivery Service. Its one of my favorites. I love all their movies. And yes, I react the same way every time food shows up in their movies. Always looks so good. I love your channel and reactions. Can't wait to see more from you.
the movies are usually not related. but grave of the fireflies and totoro were originally screened right after in one show, as they were both not that long.
Totoro is set in the 1950s. The movie was released as a double-feature with Grave of the Fireflies. The two movies are not directly related. Watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, a post-apocalyptic film with an environmental message. This is the movie that directly led to the founding of Studio Ghibli. Also highly recommended: Castle in the Sky -- Laputa which has a great steam-punk aesthetic. For the Halloween season I recommend Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000).
Hi I just discovered your channel I love your good vibes and it’s always a pleasure to rediscover my childhood movies through the eyes of someone new☺️ Send you lot of love!
This does have a dub, there's one from I think Fox(I heard it's Fox but it's also called Streamline) that I grew up with & is sadly not in circulation anymore(so you have to either get lucky finding a physical copy or pirate) & then there's the Disney dub that came out when the copyright for the first dub expired

I'm from Finland and our parents definitely bathed with us when we were really young, especially so in the sauna.

The black scoot balls are the same thing from Spirited Away. In Spirited Away they were given legs because they were given a job to carry the coal.

Omg your cat has the same name as the cat in another one of my childhood favorites: Milo and Otis
17:18 It's both, the shrine steps go up the tree-covered hill to the super big Goshinboku tree
Every time I think of this movie, I smile
Oh and for the pronunciation, the Japanese katakana is "Ji-Bu-Ri" so it's a soft g sound, even tho in the original Italian it would be a hard g sound.
Correct.

The English dub was produced by Disney with real-life sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning as Satsuki and Mei.
トトロを見てくれて、ありがとう。
Ghibli character designs are often repeated but not connected, the stories stand alone. The other lesser known films are worth your time
泣かない人もいるんだね。
君はまだ若すぎる。
Guess this is one of those fantasy movies, where kids are safe to be kids.
