Love how people say "college makes you liberal" when in reality it exposes you to a variety of people and causes you to befriend people you would have never met in your local highschool which in turn opens your eyes to other people's struggles and world views. Thus making you exposed to diversity.
Honestly I wonder if it's just maturity and having life experiences without constantly having your parents' opinions in your ear. I grew up in a super super liberal area and since I was in high school, I was surrounded by people with views that lacked nuance (teenagers just don't have that much life experience, no biggie). I never heard conservatives, only liberals, but I only ever heard liberal takes with no nuance or argumentation skill, so I concluded that conservatism must be more correct because when I thought about liberal viewpoints in my head and looked for flaws, I always won. My personal situation was also influenced by liberals using their position in our liberal area to bully me, so I suppose that's something too. Going to college for me was my opportunity to see conservatives being every bit as stupid as the liberals I grew up with. It was also my first time living in a city, my first time seriously calculating how I would get my basic needs met with the qualifications I had, my first time experiencing the world and realizing that just like how I had been compulsively lying to change the implications of my words, my parents and others around me also did that and were giving me a warped perception of the world.
I wouldn't really say I'm a liberal now, but I think I got a massive change in perspective once I could see more than my liberal, hypercompetitive high school in a rich neighborhood. I was used to being the one with less money, the one who worked harder inside and outside of school, the one who suffered more. I was used to being beaten down and I took the perspective of "how can other people complain about such tiny things as pronouns they don't even hear other people use when I'm injured and doctors won't help me and I'm trying so hard but can't make myself do anything I need to and those same people hate me for just existing? I get pushed around every day and I don't make myself a victim, so why should they be treated better?". I think for me at least, I couldn't extend compassion towards others until the constant crushing mistreatment stopped, which was also when I left for college. Seeing someone ask for compassion really hurts when you wish you had it and know nobody will give it to you, and I think it can make you hate the person who's asking because it feels like they think they deserve something that you will never be allowed to have. Once nobody was mistreating me (at least not that consistently) I realized that not suffering was possible for me, too. Immediately I had the mindset shift from "grow up and take it like I do" to "nobody has to take it, and we all have to stop dishing it out". I think going to college is the first escape for a lot of people so it may also coincide with a massive spike in compassion as they realize that compassion is possible, enjoyable, and effective.

Youre not ugly. Not only is beauty subjective, but in the eye of society to be "ugly" you have to: fail to meet eurosentric beauty standards, are not rich enough to follow trends that will deem you "pretty" if you do them, or are simply disabled or have a facial difference that makes you "unattractive" to some.
So to me, youre not ugly. Youre just not close enough to eurocentric, able-bodied, rich beauty standards.
I want to add something specifically about art that I started thinking about, how when artists draw traits that are considered ‘unattractive’, they often automatically assume they’ll look unattractive and it influences how they draw the character. But when they actively reject that bias and just draw the characteristics like… any other feature, they do literally nothing to get in the way of that character looking good. It’s just part of them.
An example is a character in a series I’ve been watching, who has a glass eye and is one of the most elegant and beautiful looking characters in the series (imo of course!) Another character from a different series has a facial scar which affects most of his face and he’s really cute and fun to draw! I love drawing both of them :>
Facial differences, disabilities, scars, none of them are “ugly.” We just make assumptions and frame them that way in our minds because we’re biased. It’s super important to unpack that bias before drawing people with those traits.
@@confusedfrog294 i'm an artist, and drawing different features is literally like my favorite thing about art. there are so many features that some people seem to dislike and i genuinely don't understand it because when you look at the world through the lens of an artist, everything is beautiful, everything is art.
i love drawing aquiline and crooked noses, burn scars, eyebags, crow's feet, vitiligo, freckles, moles, different shapes for every feature; that's what makes it fun, beautiful, unique, and interesting.
if every face looked the same, that would be a really boring world to live in.

As an addition to the tiktok about facial differences, another thing i think is important is not to assume that their life is inherently tragic or sad just because they have a facial difference. About a week ago i met up with some family friends and there was a little girl with a facial difference and later my little sister was like "poor her" like... whats so sad about it? I didnt ask because it wasn't my business but from what I saw, it seemed that she could see and hear just fine (and even if she couldnt, there's nothing inherently sad or wrong with being blind or deaf) so there was really nothing for her to be sad about. The only thing i can think of thats pitiable for her is the ableism she'll probably have to face throughout life, but thats not because of her facial difference, its because of society.
(Also, i am not a person with a facial difference, this is just my understanding as someone whos working on unlearning ableism. Feel free to correct me if im wrong on anything)

Creative Writing Prompt: Hey. Been a minute, huh. I was cleaning out my apartment a few days ago when a jumping spider wandered inside. He’s been hanging out on my ceiling, pretty wary but not as skittish as you’d expect. I’ll update you if we become friends.
I have a character at a magic school who casts a spell to attune to a familiar. She was only planning to test the spell out-not actually link herself to something-but she bonded to a spider in the room below her. She enjoyed the little guy, until she recommended he build his web somewhere less than safe. He slipped off the wall and landed in plain sight of the resident. He was promptly crushed.
The girl was witness to the animal’s last moments, its overwhelming fear, its desperation to survive, the pain of being crushed. The spider passed thinking it was finally safe in the dark, not realizing its vision had just given out.
The girl couldn’t stomach meat from that point on.
Tell me about a friendship with an animal. It doesn’t have to end as badly as that one
A child tramples over the undergrowth as they run like they never have before. Men, armed men, chase after her on foot. another tf2 hc we have is that medic has extreme trauma from his mother (shitty, drunkard mom who, when medic was 9 to 11, went around and banged the neighbors in their apartment and did so While Medic Was Trying To Sleep) and thus, when meeting Heavy's mother, gets extremely nervous and masks just about every disorder, disability, and general fucked up part of his brain he has, at least until Heavy reassures him that his mom may be hard-spoken, but she isnt abusive, and she means well. then medic unmasks to a fair degree and talks a lot more.

It’s definitely a me problem. It’s definitely on me for “not being able” to wear a mask because I’m more scared of my mom’s ridicule than the thought of being the cause of other people’s avoidable disabilities or even deaths.

Well if you can I’d put ice on your shoulder so it doesn’t swell and it probably help with any bruising do the same with your back. And definitely try not to pick up anything too heavy cause that will probably hurt like hell. And try not to sleep on your back too much. And that’s all I can really think of. I hope you heal quickly

man I love art. I'm so thankful for our 2nd grade morning teacher letting the class draw cause it's made us a much happier person. yeah we went on an art hiatus for a while but now that we're out of that and that pit of depression, we're so much happier. art basically saved our life and saved us from su1c1de multiple times because we knew we could pick up a pen or pencil or marker and draw those feelings out. art's amazing, it's a beautiful tool of life and I cannot imagine where we would be had our creativity been stunted by the 2nd grade onward. this feels so sad but im just happy cause i remembered a tip for drawing myself that is just Use round shapes. im made of ovals and circles and im very shapey. strange how this all came from That but nyeh lmao - 🥧
we're eternally thankful for our dad letting us have the freedom to draw too, without that we would have never drawn him a birthday gift and sent it to him. we would've never made him a fursona had he forced us to Not draw. art is so beautiful, it can say so many things about a person. like, a piece of art about 305's ending can represent the grief someone may feel about a loved one, a piece about me and Sam just being happy and gay can represent someone showing their happiness through us as characters.

I don't want to have a sleepover with my ex tomorrow, it's not like they're objectively awful or anything, they've never hit or harmed me in anyway, but while we were dating they kept venting constantly to me and showing their wounds, along with being very touchy when i didn't want touch at times, i was more like a personal therapist than anything else to them, while i understand depression, i just wasn't really cut out for handling them, they do need support yes, but I'm probably not the best option to constantly depend on, no matter how many years we knew each other. my day would be great until no warning scar showing and venting. I don't hate them, i just think we need to seperate completely. You shouldn't dread getting calls from someone or having them around, especially if they're supposed to be your friend after your breakup. I don't think my mom quite understands why i don't want to be around them that much anymore, it's very distressing for me to be around them. I know i have communication issues so some of this is likely my fault..but i think..that regardless you should ask before doing literally anything? I don't want to be rude, but as soon as I'm old enough i might as well just become a forest cryptid and only show up when i want to show up
At our last hangout [exes currently at the time of the hangout] i wanted a hug, as in just a friendly way of saying goodbye since we usually did that, and we did hug.. however they kissed me on the top of the head when leaving and it messed me up for hours afterwards where i was on the brink of crying on and off- in general i am uncomfy and not looking forward to this sleepover and their upcoming birthday party.
