I know im late but Grit is the kind of CO who gets stronger t he longer a game drags giben hed likely get critical mass in,arties and rockets at some point
Unit repairing is an integral part of Advance Wars, what I assume Mangs does believe is that it only should be done if absolutely neccessary or if it's important for a given strategy, some players seem to overuse this mechanic which results in units being taken out of position and eat income unnecessarily
@@k-berry8771 Yes, there are many situations where repairs are definitely worth it. Mangs worded it poorly in his past videos that you should never ever repair your units, and he's cursed to correct and clarify it to people again and again.
While Grit should always try to maximize the longevity of his infantry so they can protect the indirects, I notice that it's even more important on this map, with only three bases for production. If you lose too many infantry, you're both capped on how quickly you can replace them--and doing so prevents you from deploying other needed units.
while it was interesting to finally see a grit player, I feel like he played really poorly (not trying to be mean, just see it as is).. again I would REALLY love to see YOU play grit and utalize his playstyle to the best of your abilities. same as you did with sensei, which was SO cool to see.
Taking 2 HP off a recon (800 G) and losing 4-6 HP off your infantry sounds like a good trade but infantry are worth more than their 1000 G price would suggest. Throw away too many like this and you'll be in a bad position
I don't have a lick of tactical skill (I can't even get past the tutorial section of really easy strategy games), so I really appreciate your commentary and explanations! I went looking for Advance Wars videos in the hopes of learning at least a bit about tactics, and I'm glad I found your channel! Your outline of the various plays on both sides is helping me to grasp what's going on, and is making me think about what I would do in various situations; I find this much more productive than any other attempt to study tactics I've tried. Happily subscribed :)
It's interesting just how valuable Unit Count is, not just total money on the field. Especially in Fog of War, the map presence that having more units gives you lets you scout the enemy easier and block or trap their units in return. I wonder if it's ever worthwhile to retreat Infantry to heal on cities. Maybe in a situation where you are very limited on bases compared to your income?
At higher levels in awbw, this is a fairly common move. Of course this doesn't mean heal up every inf, and there cna be cases when it will screw you over such as delaying your tank timings, but in general repairs are viewed favorably if it doesn't disrupt key builds.
Each unit is another target that must be taken down, it doesn't matter if a unit deals 50 or 200 damage, they still have to spend an entire turn to dish it out. So if the unit deals like 8 to infantry, any infantry is as good of a meat shield as any regardless of HP Let's say you have a neo tank, but the path is blocked by 3 infantry. That's at LEAST 3 turns your neotank was out of service, and it only costed the enemy 3000. It's why retreating to heal is not as valuable, there's no point in removing a unit for 1 or more turns just to save up a small amount when they could be providing value by just taking up space
Max undeniably has the edge on this maps where you have to build your army from the ground. Grit really is scary in campaign since he has predeployed indirects on hiding places.
@@JackfrostAtreidesOmegaXZero As Mengs said, moving indirects is the real hassle, they're slow and cannot attack while they get in position. So having units pre-deployed is a big boon

Long time watcher, first comment. Can't say there was much of a chance of Grit pulling through this one, he doesn't have enough choke points to really shine and Max is Max just capable of steamrolling whatever barrier grit could attempt. Would like to see some more matches with that Drake player.

If anything the 25-day limit may nerf him more than the map, but that didn't come into effect because he got absolutely crushed
@@kingarthur3236 i wish i could see it, I'm a casual tactics guy always playing campaigns. In my uninformed opinion this match seems skewed given the co's. i thought a handicap for the opposition would be interesting.
He valued your recon a higher threat not only due to the visibility it gave, but the fact it could rip his artillery apart if he let it run free. That and the damage he'd taken from his infantry was probably what you've had done to him anyway if given the chance. In his mind, he was making the decision of when he was taking the damage rather than leaving it up to you Mangs.
I don't disagree with his early game decision to attack recon with infantry but throughout the match, he pretty much just yolo'ed all his infantry. Because of that, I doubt he was even thinking that strategically about that first play, it seems like he just yolo's his stuff in general.
10:50 Attacking the Recon with the infantry from the forest, I get. It'll keep it from one-shotting healthy infantry, and the forest gives some cover from the counter attack. It's on a shoal too, so you get a good value attack. I don't even mind revealing the artillery. It's not like your opponent isn't expecting artillery. Attacking it from the shoal, though? That was a mistake. He should've kept it one space back on the plain. With every other infantry in that area in place, the recon still wouldn't have been able to hit the artillery. Then, mangs would be forced to either a) hit one of the infantry, at which point the artillery could just blast it away, maybe leaving it with 1 HP if it was sat on the city or forest, or b) retreat the recon, which allows Grit to keep his healthy infantry and reposition his artillery. Maybe not the best course of action, but with a recon in the area and only the artillery as an answer, there's not much you can do. Yeah, a stealthy approach would've been better, and looking at the rest of the match, that was something he definitely had problems with.
Max and grit is likes a brain vs brawn Max: the agressive guy who can destroy everything in his path without strategie Grit: the guy who outsmart the brute guy for example grit can hides his artilery in places where the brute won't expect like forest and take out max tanks with his indirects Sometimes brain wins agains't brawn but sometimes you can get the opposite
Mangs needs to play on larger maps. Just a few squares wider and/or taller can change how certain COs function. Fuel cost becomes a concern, units spread out and the player has to micromanage smaller battlegroups more, and players are much more likely to infiltrate small attack forces behind enemy lines. If you play on small maps all the time you're making the games more predictable and less challenging.
Even on huge maps I very very rarely find myself thinking "oh I'm running low on fuel right no", and even if I somehow am, I'm gonna have APCs around cause they'll be transporting Infantry all over the place, so no, fuel isn't a concern.
I'm not a fog fan but I played on this map and I thought it was a very good, well-balanced map. There are a lot of fog maps that I feel are way too gimmicky or weighted to favor COs like Grit, Sonja, or Lash, but this one's pretty generally good. Even if you don't play with fog, this is a good map to help balance out Grit. He's still strong, especially because there are no airports, but not overwhelmingly so.
This video has inspired me to play this match up against my friends. None of us are very good at advance wars, so I'm sure it will be interesting! Another excellent video, mangs!
These 2 CO's counter each other out pretty well when played at an even Skill level. Ive beaten Grit 3 times with Olaf so far. His range is annoying to Deal with but manegeable. Nice vid. Keep em rolling Mangs
grit can win 13000 to 18000 the point of the grit is no longer economy, it is building up that critical mass of range units, because you could just product infantry on 2 factory and 1 arty on the last one. and you would still be saving money for your rocket
My other hobby is wargaming. Max vs Grit is like NATO vs the Warsaw Pact: The first has higher quality units. The second emphasizes a ton of artillery and walls of SAMs.
So in that first recon attack on the shores I assumed your opponent was trying to box you away from the artillery. This would allow the artillery to still operate in the north (otherwise you could have circled the infantry). But then he combined his infantry in the north, moved the arty south and kept attacking with inf. No idea.
Maxtillery spam to the front line would be a bigger flex than neotanks. It basically says "I'm already winning far enough that I can just buy this and still win"
YES, this is what i been hopping for you to do also, just in general, more advance wars by web castings, i honestly could just binge watch all these episodes many times over
I legit only clicked thumbs up because Mangs finally used "shoot *at"* instead of "shoot *on".* It's as if he's learning how to English! ... If only just that one time.
@@rosheafan "Fire on"?? Really? I've heard "fire at x", but never "fire on x". (I mean, "open fire on x", sure, but not "fire on x" unless there was an actual fire.)
Congratulations on calling him unique and not just a bone head for that beginning artillery play, it looks incredibly bad and not the move that should've been made. Hahaha, you're too polite man.
10:00 well, 2 hp on a recon, thats.. 4000, 400*2, so 800 lost while 5 hp on a infantry thats .. 1000, 100*5, so 500 lost so it was definetly worth shooting the recon with the infantry (atleast if you only consider raw money cost)
Except Recon get most of their value from vision, which is unaffected by damage. Meanwhile, the infantry get significant value from being able to capture cities, which is crippled by damage. None of the high HP recon/infantry trades were good for the infantry.
Infantry is your economy, it is like a worker in an RTS. You can't keep it protected, but you def. can't treat it as disposable either. At least until you get enough caps
@@theblackantonio i wouldn't say unplayable, i would say "Without the upper hand" down to a more fair play. Because he can still use his artillery for zoning, which with his higher range he is honestly better at it. Might have some downs obviously, but also some ups. Would say it's decent.
It could be interesting to do those videos with the people you played with, that way instead of saying "I don't why he did this, it was pretty weird" you could ask the player and have him explaining why he did some of his plays, having two point of views would be rad
I think it is sad that the dual strike of max and grit doesnt goes to 133.7% synergy . And to answer your question I do it Kanbei style: " if you archers got ambushed and don't use Bushido they are unoathfull " "If your samurai cant use a bow they will end their hunt hungry. Use Bushido"
"How about that? Muscle really does win a match!" "Well I'll be dipped in tar. I coulda sworn that my artillery woulda made you back down." "What? You think I'd retreat at the sight of an exposed unit? I may not be good at utilizing them but I know that you don't let your enemy see indirect units!" "It may be a one-dimensional strategy but whoowee is it hard to stop those tanks when they get rollin'!" "Who's calling who one-dimensional?!"

I would love to see a match with Javier. I'm currently completing a Dual Strike safe file, and I love the guy. Granted, it's only single player and I do use skills, but he seems indestructible.
I think both Max and Grit are equally powerful in the hands of an experienced player. But if two newbies were to play this match up, I think the Max player would have the edge as it should be clear that you will have to be aggressive early on. But the right player on Grit will have a chance to try and prevent this
I'd argue that a newbie Grit player would have the advantage because it's a lot easier to hide in forests and snipe than it is to keep track of where threats are.
@@TheFinalChapters Yeah thats true, then it will come down to who has the better scouting or stealth. Either way, I think most Max vs Grit match ups should be entertaining and balanced in terms of power
What I think he thought by damaging that recon and putting that artillery there was to discourage you from pushing, as in, "ok so either you leave us alone or your recon is dead next turn"
I've played as, and against a handful of Grits so far. The biggest Issue I have, and see, is the balance of indirects to directs. I make to many directs which makes it easy for my opponent to break me, and my opponents make to many indirects, and a good recon or two, is enough to break through them. Do you have any general advice for balancing the two as Grit?
As soon as you said it was 25 day limit I knew there was NO way Grit would be able to win that. It should be around 35 for a fairer matchup. Grit is so high in the tier list because he outlives most of the COs if the game keeps going, but he is mediocre for a low day limit like that.
@@kentknightofcaelin4537 He was a bad Grit player and he would have lost either way. But if he was a good Grit player he would have lost because of that short limit, since it's much harder for Grit to grab properties in the middle even if his economy is smashing yours because of the profit from indirects
I would play this match up all the time when I was a kid because me and my dad would play together. He would main Max and I would main Grit and I hardly ever won, mainly because I was a stupid kid and not an adult but my dad would always go easy on me. With the remake coming out I can't wait to play may dad again and see how good I am now with more experience.
Always nice to see a hero Max take down villain Grit. Even if I spent half the battle screaming at the Grit player "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" xD
You've often lowkey called a lot of past opponents bad but I always felt like that was often kinda unfair. Most of your past opponents were pretty good, maybe it's just because I actually play grit but I feel like this guy played awfully. So in that first recon attack on the shores I assumed your opponent was trying to box you away from the artillery. This would allow the artillery to still operate in the north (otherwise you could have circled the infantry). But then he combined his infantry in the north, moved the arty south and kept attacking with inf. No idea.
Your analogy was almost spot on.
Just think of the mouse as the one with the mouse traps.
Disappointed that we don’t get to see Maxtillery
Yeah we needed that to counter the Grit medium tank
Maxtillery spam to the front line would be a bigger flex than neotanks. It basically says "I'm already winning far enough that I can just buy this and still win"
@@zeroyuki92 for sure 😂
Didn't surrender until the very end, i guess you can say he had...
A lot of grit
Would love to see you play this again as the grit player!
These themed matches are so good. Please do more
YES, this is what i been hopping for you to do
also, just in general, more advance wars by web castings, i honestly could just binge watch all these episodes many times over
Lateness has evolved
Not only streams, but also videos
At this point I've heard Mangs explain an exception to the "don't ever repair rule" more often than pointing out "this is why you don't repair"
It's a rule of thumb, most of implementing it correctly is about learning the exceptions.
Nice! Love some Advance Wars commentary in the background while I play Fire Emblem
cat and mouse works, although Tom and Jerry wouldve been more precise
Thanks Mangs for making love again a game from childhood
Congratulations on calling him unique and not just a bone head for that beginning artillery play, it looks incredibly bad and not the move that should've been made. Hahaha, you're too polite man.
Cat vs Mouse, but mouse has a gun
0:06
Max: RIGHT INTO MY DIRECT HIT!
0:11
Grit: indirect lovers son!
10:00 well, 2 hp on a recon, thats.. 4000, 400*2, so 800 lost
while 5 hp on a infantry thats .. 1000, 100*5, so 500 lost
so it was definetly worth shooting the recon with the infantry
(atleast if you only consider raw money cost)
Except Recon get most of their value from vision, which is unaffected by damage.
Meanwhile, the infantry get significant value from being able to capture cities, which is crippled by damage.
None of the high HP recon/infantry trades were good for the infantry.
Infantry is your economy, it is like a worker in an RTS.
You can't keep it protected, but you def. can't treat it as disposable either. At least until you get enough caps
Ive played AV thru all the titles. But I'm learning so much! Thanks for your content boss! One of these days Ill get the gumption to challenge ya!
I'd say grit would win on the majority of maps if two equally skilled players played them, but it is a close match
FoW works in Grit's favour quite a lot, I'd say. A well placed Rocket and/or Missile can be a massive headache for his opponent to deal with.
Well playing without FoW let's you not scout for enemies so they are easier targets so to me it's fair game
Grit is completely unplayable without fog.
@@theblackantonio i wouldn't say unplayable, i would say "Without the upper hand" down to a more fair play.
Because he can still use his artillery for zoning, which with his higher range he is honestly better at it.
Might have some downs obviously, but also some ups.
Would say it's decent.
@@merlin9845 barely playable on maps which favor indirects. However he also loses to tank rushes, fast copters etc.
It could be interesting to do those videos with the people you played with, that way instead of saying "I don't why he did this, it was pretty weird" you could ask the player and have him explaining why he did some of his plays, having two point of views would be rad
As a Gauge player when Days of Ruin was online, this game reminds me of my early games vs Tabitha.
don't tell me you recklessly throw your infantries into enemy units too...
Ah, Grit, the embodyment of the maginot line…
Good thing there's no Belgium on Wars World.
Seems like a player who was used to playing as a different CO and gave Grit a shot for fun.
I think it is sad that the dual strike of max and grit doesnt goes to 133.7% synergy .
And to answer your question I do it Kanbei style:
" if you archers got ambushed and don't use Bushido they are unoathfull "
"If your samurai cant use a bow they will end their hunt hungry. Use Bushido"
"How about that? Muscle really does win a match!"
"Well I'll be dipped in tar. I coulda sworn that my artillery woulda made you back down."
"What? You think I'd retreat at the sight of an exposed unit? I may not be good at utilizing them but I know that you don't let your enemy see indirect units!"
"It may be a one-dimensional strategy but whoowee is it hard to stop those tanks when they get rollin'!"
"Who's calling who one-dimensional?!"
wait wait wait! There's a channel about advance wars?!?!?! There's still an audience for advance wars?!?!?! Dude this is one of my go-to games back in the GBA days! How did I just discover this channel now?!?!?!?
Max and Grit argue over who gets Nell 2021 colorized.
Love these replays
Mad lad attacked a mech on a mountain with a tank.
I would love to see a match with Javier. I'm currently completing a Dual Strike safe file, and I love the guy. Granted, it's only single player and I do use skills, but he seems indestructible.
Grit is a high capped CO.If noob players use Grit, they just gonna get destroyed
10:31 The opponent literally lives up to his username.
It would be fun to watch you go up against Max with Grit to see how it's done if you cannot find any good Grit players to challenge you.
What I think he thought by damaging that recon and putting that artillery there was to discourage you from pushing, as in, "ok so either you leave us alone or your recon is dead next turn"
0:18 oh so Tom and Jerry basically
Holy . I did not know that we could play advance war online !
Realistically, what would he have done with a 35 day limit? His HQ woul've been captured regardless.
@@kentknightofcaelin4537 He was a bad Grit player and he would have lost either way. But if he was a good Grit player he would have lost because of that short limit, since it's much harder for Grit to grab properties in the middle even if his economy is smashing yours because of the profit from indirects
Max: THESE guns ain't for show *kissed biceps"
I say keep the AW content rolling
I would play this match up all the time when I was a kid because me and my dad would play together. He would main Max and I would main Grit and I hardly ever won, mainly because I was a stupid kid and not an adult but my dad would always go easy on me. With the remake coming out I can't wait to play may dad again and see how good I am now with more experience.
Always nice to see a hero Max take down villain Grit. Even if I spent half the battle screaming at the Grit player "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" xD
Are we not talking about the fact that the man's name is literally Aggressively Cringe
Correct that was my name
Next video, Grit vs Max! Show us the other side!
Tom and Jerry cartoon colorized.
18:00 the technical term you're looking for is "overlapping fields of fire"
I always hate going against a decent Grit player.
I love these videos!!
Dude really named himself Aggressively Cringe
You've often lowkey called a lot of past opponents bad but I always felt like that was often kinda unfair. Most of your past opponents were pretty good, maybe it's just because I actually play grit but I feel like this guy played awfully. There's so many mistakes in the early game he basically screwed up and made it unwinnable off the start.
In terms of commanders used it was a pretty balanced match
