    Hi, i'm a seaman, I used to work on cargo ships and tug boats. I personaly do a few things differetly, but you made a really good video and you covering the basics👍 i'll just suggest that is also good to know how to tie a loop in the middle of the line. My personal favourite is the alpine butterfly. Is strong quite easy to tie and for me the most important, is very easy to untie.

      Hey Samo thanks for the comment, and yes I agree that's a really useful knot as well.

    I would add the taut line hitch to the list of basic knots boaters should know. I use a taut line hitch to secure the fenders to the boat railings which allows you to easily adjust the height of the fenders along the side when you dock at various ramps of differing heights. Good short video on knots basics! Thanks.

    Also good to note that it’s very important to match your diameter line to clear size, I think it’s 1/16” to one inch of cleat. Now that being said a small vessel is going to typically have 4 1/2” cleats vs a typical 12 or 16” dock cleat in this case wrapping a few wraps around the larger cleat with the smaller diameter line then continue with the typical hitch, this will give surface tension to the larger cleat with small line, personally I wouldn’t thread through the eye of the cleat simply because not all cleats have them and if you have a long line could just take up time but most important thing to keep in mind is to keep learning from others and to be open minded, thinking you have the end all be all knot could get you in trouble. Thanks for the video, love your property btw!

    2:58 this works way better if you do an extra wrap around the anchor point, before tying the half-hitches

      There's a few variations to the cleat hitch, I've been tying this one for 30 years without a failure. Been through some pretty intense storms too. Thanks for watching!

    Okay, guys, if you're tying a small boat up on pretty flat water, I suppose these are fine. But, for bigger boats, more weather, bigger water:
    The Cleat Hitch - Don't tie it this way. Don't go through the middle. Just make 1 turn around the far horn, then the near horn, then start your figure 8s. If the line is really slippery, braided, you may need more than the 2 wraps we always see (remember, Ashley was using tarred hemp; it didn't stretch, and it didn't slip much). If you use a locking hitch at all, only use it on the last turn.
    The locking turn is meant to tame the free end, *not* to take up strain that made its way 'round the cleat. You'll not be able to untie it w/out a knife, in that case. Avoid locking hitches deeper down.
    His "Double Half Hitch" - I would make a full turn (go 'round the piling or the bull rail 1 and 1/2 times); at the point you can just hold the turns in your other hand, keep the boat secure, as you tie your 2 Half Hitches on the standing part.
    Using 2 Bowlines as a Bend - I generally wouldn't do this, and certainly not if I were leaving the boat. It is impressive how quickly a line can saw through another line. Unless the bend will see constant tension, I'd pick something else. For dock lines, the Double Sheet Bend is great. I'm also partial to the Zeppelin Bend.

      Hey Kurt thanks for the feedback. A really common sight around these parts is dock cleats with missing horns. The first thing the rope touches will bear the most load. As the boat rides up and down in the waves it tugs hard on the cleat at the first point of contact. Since the middle hole is the strongest part of the cleat that's the best place to start. Of course if you're docking at a location meant for larger boats the cleats are more heavy duty and you can start around the horn, but the most secure option is to always go through the middle hole first, IMHO of course!

    • @JohnFavstar
      @JohnFavstar  2 года назад +1

      Attaching to a loop I would just use a series of half-hitches. Just repeat the half-hitch as demonstrated in the video, repeat 3 or 4 and you'll be good to go!

    What happened to the reef knot sometimes known as the square knot? Traditionally used to join two ends of ropes together. Otherwise excellent job in your descriptions. Waita go Favstar!

    • @kurtschmidt5746

      Reef Knot should never be used to bend (join) 2 different lines. Ever.
      For boating, see the Sheet Bend and the Zeppelin Bend. If climbing, or ascending the mast, I'd consdier the Figure 8 Bend, or the Fisherman's Knot. Ask a climber.

    Always put a half hitch on top of the clove hitch as the clove can and will work loose.

    • @Themuskychannel
      @Themuskychannel 3 года назад +3

      Search “a perfect clear hitch” first one to pop up by Maryland school of sailing. Yes it’s a 10min video on a cleat hitch but it’s the most simplistic, fastest way to do it. And I get it, being a novice boater it’s hard to have confidence in knots you have never used before so by default we go to when in doubt one more knot, this is a great video though thanks for taking the time to show! :)
