When I was a Naval reserve. I was told to use a bowline if I ever got into trouble. I had to learn to use my left hand and then my right hand to do a bowline knot. It does not slip and could save your life if you got injured in the water and a single line was chucked to you.

Jon always makes these things look really easy! These techniques need loads and loads of practice!

Very informative, but, do I need super slow motion from your video to show the technique as a newbie?
    ?

Hi Jon, always love your videos. I've seen dozens of knot videos, but this one really brings home the application and use of them. Well done. Paul

A round turn and two half hitches is a super knot...totally secure and can be tied really quickly.

I'm sure I'll get shot down here but I've always felt that a bowline is best when using a towing bridle. It allows the tow rope to traverse the bridle meaning there is always some force exerted on both end of the bridle. Using a sheet bend means there is only ever force on both ends when the towing line is pulling dead centre astern. Sheet bend is great if you need to extend the towing line.

As a novice I have watched a few videos on boats putting out fenders, they always seem to be secured to the outer handrails at the top of the rail, this makes me think that there is a lot of upper stress on the the lines with potential to damage the rails, would it not be better to tie fenders at the base on the vertical rails that support the horizontals?

That's how you should do it on the verticle poles at the base way stronger

One of the worst videos in this (excellent) series - yes, the focus is on the use of the knots, but the process of tieing them is shown wayyy too fast and not from enough angles by Jon.
