Hi Dominic. I love my Forest Pansey, but I've found it doesn't tolerate the sun very well in the northeast San Fernando valley (my yard, at any rate). My first one died, so I keep our second one potted and move it around for Sun or shade as the year progresses. We also have a Hearts of Gold that does very well. By late summer it will also have some sunburnt leaves, ut not to the same extent as the Forest Pansey. The Hearts of Gold has beautiful bright lime-green leaves. There's a local caterpillar that loves the tree; it develops into a butterfly of the same color as the leaves it feasted on. I don't mind sacrificing a few leaves for that beautiful butterfly. I have about 4 types of RedBud trees. The only thing I regret, is having the tree near the entry way. During bloom season, the kids would track falling flowers into the house. Other than that, I love them. Heart A Flame, Flame Thrower, and Carolina Sweetheart I would recommend, although many others are out there ... Golden Falls and Rising Sun.

It only performed moderately well last season ( not a lot of blooms in springs, slow to no growth). Just found a canker on trunk to boot!!! There’s life and green when scraping trunk. Thought it was fairly established but I will deep water every 3-4 days until I see growth. Suggestions please…I want to save this glorious tree.

Awesome thanks!!! 🙏🏼 It’s actually a fairly low maintenance tree. Just a little bit of selective pruning in the cooler months and that’s about it. It could benefit from a small amount of even count fertilizer in early Spring but even that is not totally necessary. You got a great tree 🌳

Yes that’s correct! After that two weeks you can taper back to 3-4x per week for then next few weeks, then 2x per week for another few weeks. Then once it’s established, just one deep watering a week should be adequate. But also depends on soil type, climate and other factors.

So far, he has a DEAD CACTUS where I will suggest this in a large pot. 😳 Going for zone 9, arborvitae pancake, Dwarf hinoki cypress, loropetalum, blue fescue for ground-cover, podocarpus and a gardenia near front door. What do you think? All planter beds except for tree. 🤞🏼😊
Typically, these trees have a fairly non-invasive root system. However if it may be a concern, there are root barrier products that can help contain the root system.
Hi, I have two brand new young Forrest Pansies that have tiny branches near the bottom of the tree. Do I prune those off? Also, do all these trees form a curve at the very top of the young tree. Should that be staked? Thank you.
From what you’re describing, yes I would prune off the small branches at the bottom to maintain the structure of the tree as desired. And if the tender branches at the top are flopping over a bit, then staking will definitely help with directing an upright growth. Hope this helps!
Hello! I just ordered mine from Lowe’s and I had it in the pot for maybe a week and the leaves are already wilting! I’m very frustrated bc I’ve bought two from Lowe’s. One red bud doesn’t have its leaves yet (they were growing but dropped in the middle of April, and it looks like it’s trying to regrow them back) and now my new forest pansy is wilting its leaves in the pot!!
Gotcha. Yeah it should be fine. They are very resilient. If it’s still in the pot from the nursery just give it a good thorough saturation every 3 days (assuming it’s in a 15 gallon container?) Also sometimes after transport, a tree can defoliate due to shock or wind if it’s not covered… say hanging out of the back of a pickup truck. But I think you will notice new growth over the next couple weeks.. I hope!

It is available in Ontario nurseries from time to time. Forest Pansy is significantly less hardy than the species, which has naturalized in my Ottawa garden. There are other purple selections, and I saw Flame Thrower last spring which is absolutely amazing for the diversity of foliage colours.
Not sure if I have the same redbud. No wonder how pretty it looks, it’s annoyingly invasive and I would not ever want this again in my yard, once I get rid of it. I have so many baby trees growing I can prob start a nursery of just redbuds. It grows from in between the bushes. 😢
Yes!… to a degree. Every so often when deer get super hungry they tend to nibble on things that are labeled deer resistant. But this one is pretty good.

Is this tree the same as western red bud? Also, can it be grown in a pot or planter?
Yes it’s the same genus and species! Just a red leaf cultivar. It could work in a pot with well-drained soil.

There's a northern strain developed by the University of Minnesota that is much more hardy. Not sure where you can find it though.
