Watched a few videos of this mod and decided to give it a try yesterday. I have a tweezer soldering iron which you can close on each side of the smd caps and resistors. This worked quite well but required careful placement as to not heat near by parts. I have a hot air gun that I planned to use on the eight pin IC removal but I was concerned that it might blow off the adjacent tiny parts. I used an exacto knife to score the leads at the package several times. You can press on the cut and snap of the leads. After that the remaining remnants can be easily removed with soldering iron. That tiny capacitor is smaller that I thought but I managed to get it installed. Happy to say that the mod is working. Thank you for the excellent video.

    • @RobertoDenis-ot5ie
      @RobertoDenis-ot5ie Месяц назад

To remove these small smd, I slip a very thin wire under one of the sides (making a loop) and put some upward lifting pressure while heating the pins on that side (not too much or you will pull up the traces). The chip will pop up from that side, then the rest is easy. Doing it this way saves the chip for other uses (or reversing the mod).

Is there any effect on transmitting for the existing frequencies that this radio is capable of transmitting on? The aim for me is to have extended receive but retain full transmission capability. Can you do a video testing power and spurious transmission? Now that you have done the upgrade are there any lessons learnt I.e. any things you would do differently?

At 4:32 you show the removal of the lock nut on the antenna connector. I have two of these radios and that lock nut is below the plastic case (against the chassis), not on the outside. It does not need to be removed since it is inside the case. In fact, it cannot be removed since the hole in the case is smaller than the nut. It is not used to hold the plastic case and the chassis together. This may be a manufacturing mistake but I thought to let everyone know.

Amazing what creative and capable people come up with ... by the way you should have soldered the big resistor-alike looking inductor with shorter leads, which is one of the many reasons why everybody is using SMD technology, avoiding unnecessary cross talk - since it seems to be going towards ground it should be easy to do that.
Thanks for showing this so very well visually and verbally documented process - great work.👍
With all the extended wiring and with that additional capacities does it still operate on UHF without signal degradation?
I also love to tinker with radio related stuff all my life and that is why I smiled when seeing this, turning the cheapest Chinese FM radio into an all-mode HF receiver, though as a serious HF enthusiast you question yourself why not spend a few bucks more and get like e.g. a Malachite SDR or Chinese clone and also have a tiny portable HF receiver with serious performance for a device of that size and it is also capable op listening even up to higher frequencies. I guess here this is more a proof of concept that stuff like this, which was unthinkable 20 years ago, is now possible due to the digital backend, relatively capable processor/controller and most of all some very capable people who created these hacks showing us this new dimension of mods. 🙏
This definitely leads us to realize that there will soon be way more cool stuff to come ... like dedicated handheld transceivers that do all this with high dynamic SDR front-ends while being able to send AND receive from HF to UHF in all modes that will come close to the quality of big and heavy traditional transceivers.

Ultimately we will be seeing cellphones with 'all band' receivers and HF/VHF/UHF all-mode transceivers all together in one package. As in decades past, hams are pushing the technology envelope for new products. It's good to see.

I’m very grateful to everyone who made this project. CC-HF software and full band modification with a si4732 is just the great peace of engineering marvel. I can imagine how many hours, effort and love is used to bring this little Chinese radio to the next level..!
I have one question about calibration. Is it possible to calibrate frequency on SSB permanently? I have to tweak BFO +680 in order to get clean usb signal. Problem is that I have to do this every time I turn radio ON because BFO is resetting when the radio is switched off .

Great video. Does this mod limit the device to only one specific firmware type/version? Also, if you have the instructions, can you post a link to them? I purchased the kit and would like to install it, but have some documentation to go by which is eaiser than following steps in an entire video.

Anyway to modify the power output from 5 watt to 8 watt??
Also would like to know if there are and tx chip modifications..
Wouldn't mind if I could hook up my antenna tuner and use like the yaesu 817..
With the rx mod it is like the kenwood th-f6. .. with about a $300 difference..

Very cool. I love the UV-K5/6. It's a bit of an expensive upgrade though. In my case, that chip board is half the price of what I paid for it. But I think i'll still give it a go. I wish someone would do some work on the firmware for the Quansheng UV-5R plus though because that radio is great. Super awesome video though, thanks.

    Hello Paul,
thank you for the video. I bought that kit and installed it yesterday. Fortunately it's running but the capacitor was a real challange ( I needed 3 tries 😂). vy 73

At 15:17 into the video. Your checking the continuity. I can't tell if your bridging from the top of the board to the main board or somehow you where able to solder from the bottom
of the MOD board to the top of the radio's board. How did you solder the 8 spots from where the 8 pin chip used to be ? Thanks

    Hi Paul
    Great video,
Is 1khz the lowest tuning step in ssb this unit can do , or is there then a fine tune,
    Thanks Dave 2E0DMB

Hello, excellent video, I was waiting for it because I almost have my module at home. On the other hand, I have an IC-706 MKII M, I have not been able to modify it so that it transmits in 11 meters, do you have anything about it?

Is the antenna switch between the original antenna and the new antenna you installed done automatically, based on frequency, or do you need to manually switch them using some sequence of keys from the firmware? Thanks
