The problem with Vivek's arguement is that he completely under-estimates the sheer love of curiosity which is the bed rock of excellence. GDP economics, cheeper solutions, more consumerism etc. isn't probably a solution to the real problems facing our society. True that there is a fetish to publish among academicians, but it is more of a "systemic" problem because the funding agencies are overplaying the carrot and stick arguement. One can find a similar example is tv journalism which went from being a dynamic and creative profession to something that is more of a theatrics, because TRP ratings are the be all and end all for them.
