    Love the older equipment, much better built than the disposable junk that’s manufactured today. I would have replaced that bearing with a new quality replacement. That bearing is probably a standard off the shelf sealed ball bearing that’s readily available. I’m glad to see others repairing the older equipment rather than throwing them away, great job love your channel.

    Thanks. That helped me get mine going again. I did a carb rebuild and when it fired up the engine was great but head not spinning. Somehow in the process managed to get the drive shaft disconnected from head I think since the tube was a bit loose and had moved - this helped me get it going again.

    Hi I have tried innumerable times to get my line trimmer to work to no avail. In actual fact I just gave up and bought an electric 240 volt unit for $50 but on reflection it is still sitting in the box and have decided I am not going to let that motor get the better of me so now when I look at this video I am more determined and have started to pull the whole unit apart. Will keep you informed !

    Remember something you said about checking the spark arrestor screen in the muffler? I opened the muffler to check it out, and Voila!!! The spark arrestor is missing... Now I have to buy one and maybe that's the reason why the trimmer bogged down and turns off when moving the lever to run...

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  4 года назад

      not having a spark arrestor won't make it bog down going from choke to no choke

    Brilliant repair 😁 even this old Echo's trimmer head is smoother than my new chinese trimmer 😐🤣 high quality ball bearing in the head are really important while trimming ... poor quality ones tend to stop faster when you stop reving up 😡 and that's annoying

    Problem is once bearings are pitted even though you’ve managed to break it loose they’re still not going to roll smoothly. When he spun that I could hear the bearing rumble even in the video. This means two things one it’s going to fail permanently soon and two even though it’s running it’s going to be losing a lot of power in that bearing. Echo is a major brand I am surprised even though it’s older you seem to think you can’t get parts I didn’t know they were poor that way.

    • @HomeGaragechannel

    LOVE THIS - THANK YOU - YOU MADE IT LOOK EASY. My Echo 9yrs old, is spinning, but the throttle won't engage it to 'cut'. It keeps spinning, but no power when I squeeze the throttle. So, from what I watched, I am guess it is the middle long thing not engaging. Oh well, no time, so just purchased a Stihl FS 56 RC.

    Great video and i had the same experience with a friends echo trimmer but a newer model the head would spin then stop so i lubed the drive cable first and though that was it but it stopped completely . i tool the front part off and the bearing was froze so i soaked it with penetrating oil and checked for a new part which was 35 dollars because you couldnt just buy the bearing the bearing loosened up and gave the trimmer back and no problems .

      In the long term, the bearing has no lubrication anymore (either what lead to seizing, or dissolved by the oil). The part catalog shows what size of bearing goes in each place, e.g. 6001 and 6900 for the sealed ones on either end of the drive shaft. They require a heat gun and retaining ring pliers to remove, but can be had for cheap. If the seal is removable, they can be cleaned and re-greased.
      PDF Manual & Catalog finder (give your specific model to make sure):
      www.echo-usa.com/Support-Help/Technical-Documents
      E.g., Parts Catalog for SRM-225 in PDF form:

With motor stopped, and I turn the trimmer head by hand, the motor turns over too. Could this be caused by clutch not disengaging? And could you recommend a DIY fix? ... thx, tww
