  • In this video we will carefully inspect a really nice 1965 Blackface Fender Super Reverb and perform the necessary repairs to ensure great tone and reliability. Afterwards, we will perform a lengthy audio test to verify the success of the repairs. In addition, we will visit Ollie in her new home, open a great gift package, paint a zombie-resistant fence, and get a visit from Jack himself.
    The Part 2 video is a detailed circuit comparison of Blackface and Silverface Super Reverbs, including the evolution of the circuit and how to get BF tone from a SF circuit.....and save a fortune.

      Watch the sneak peek of footage from The Beatles: Get Back that director Peter Jackson just put up yesterday. Nothing but SF Fenders in the studio for the Let It Be tracks. The Beatles mostly used single coil guitars throughout most of their career. As a general rule, single coils tend to produce more highs than humbuckers, and BF Fender amps have more highs than their SF counterparts. As a result, in my humble opinion, Teles & Strats tend to sound better through SF amps while Les Paul type guitars sound better through BF amps. The Beatles seemed to recognize this too. ruclips.net/video/UocEGvQ10OE/видео.html

      @@wildbillhackett I don't think it's true that BF Fender amps have more highs than their SF counterparts, although the SF definitely have more lows (too much!). If anything, the "snubber" caps that CBS sprinkled on the power tubes of 40-50 & 80-100 watt amps reduced highs slightly. The silverfaces in Let It Be were '68 drip edge models, which were transitional between blackface and later silverface.

    Doug, in the middle to late 60s Fender came out with a copy of the Super Reverb that included four 10-inch JBL speakers. One came into the local shop where I was taking guitar lessons and a legendary guitarist by the name of Skeets McWilliams sat down and played it . At some point he stopped playing and just decided to test. Got-o-mighty that thing would get loud and maintain its clarity and cleanliness at all volumes. It was amazing

    • @UncleDoug

      I've heard of some early Fender amps with JBL speakers, Jim. Perhaps they were an extra-cost option. That must have been quite a day for you as a lad.....I see that you still remember it over 55 years later.

    • @pneumatic00
      @pneumatic00 3 года назад

      That may or may not have been a copy; there were folks who replaced the 4x 10" spkrs in a Super with JBLs. I don't know if the factory ever produced JBL-equipped Supers. Holy cow, those were heavy amps. That was a pricy upgrade. Supers were $500 all day long and the speakers were $125 each.

    • @jimsuber6784
      @jimsuber6784 3 года назад

      @@pneumatic00 I remember at the time they cost $430.00 here. I do remember laughing at the price w/JBLs. Of course, at $80.00 a week, my dad got a chuckle out of the 430.00. The shop carried another brand of amp, speaker with head, called Standel. I seem to remember it cost the same thing.

    I had a thought Doug, about that extra resistor in the AA270 bias supply. A cap by itself to me is like a tank or a well storing the energy, some waves will still flow across it. However chuck in a resistor and all of a sudden we have an RC filter sending the ripple to ground. I'm loving the respect you're showing these beautiful old amplifiers. All the best from NZ

    After whining n moaning bout the excessive weight with my twin with JBL d120s I slurped up a new Super Reverb from a failed store in Midland, began complaining shortly that it , too was a heavy beast! Why I didn’t at least keep the amp n make it into a head, I’ll never know! Awsome amp! Great job by Jack n Ollie on demo! Merry Christmas!

    My first proper guitar amp back in 1980 was a $25 bone stock but cigarette burns across the entire front edge, April 1965 Fender Bandmaster head. I absolutely loved that amp! The tone was so rich and thick , and the Tremolo was very useable. After 20-30 great tube amps I can still hear the specialness of my Bandmaster. Basically the tone that got me I can hear on this Cat Power song- (RUclips video)- *Cat Power - "Cross Bones Style"* which is a Twin Reverb as you can see her play in the video. Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) has used a Fender Twin for years. Always a good Fender tone regardless of the guitar she's playing.
    I once had a Silver face Twin Reverb that the previous owner added a single transistor preamp buffer to the Tremolo ch. input. Sounded great!

    Wonderful video Uncle Doug, there is definitely better tone in the BF amps and your explanation of why this is true is very interesting and useful. Right now my BF SR amp’s output or volume goes down when I turn up the intensity of the tremolo.....hopefully with your videos on tremolo circuits I will find the cause.
    Rgds

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  3 года назад

      Thanks so much, Alvaro. The 50K RA Intensity pot is a fixed load in the circuit (i.e. the resistance to ground does not change when the pot is adjusted), so this should not be happening. I wonder if your photoresistor is faulty (i.e. too low resistance to ground) ?

    Well done as usual, Uncle. I really enjoy the contrast of Fender circuits! This very necessary comparator will not only educate the masses, but gives most of your viewership an advantage while pricing Fender vintage amplifiers. This unselfish act is an affirmation of your generous nature. I am floored by this attribute. I wish more hosts were as forthcoming with all matter of fact regarding tube amplifiers. Please remain safe. Enjoy the usual December festivities with your family members. I'm very ready to say goodbye to 2020. This past year has been a modern-day trail of tears for the entire world. While we have addressed every Fender amp model made prior to 1976, and have discussed ultralinear circuits in general, I don't believe we have ever gone into detail on Fender ultralinear circuits, AJ. I'll keep it in mind for the future.
