  • In this video I discuss two ways that our culture can help us deceive ourselves about our independence from God and the privacy of our inner life. We'll look at two passages of Scripture to help rid ourselves of these two false beliefs.

Thanks, Dr. B. As I thought about what you said, it reminded me of when I was a new Christian. For the first few years of my life in Christ, I still lived autonomously; He was my Savior, but I didn't submit to Him as my Lord. The Holy Spirit showed me through Scripture that I must submit my life wholly to Christ. That was a turning point. I realized what He meant by submitting my life to Him. Since then, Christ is not only my Savior, but Lord of my life. That means that any thought, behavior, word, action, interaction, etc., must be done His way, not mine. That is what I strive to do. As a sinful person, saved by grace, I still sin, but I don't want to in most cases. In those cases where I do intentionally sin, I depend on God to change my heart and mind.
As you said, all of creation is dependent for its continued existence and continued on God. We belong to Him, and we do not belong to ourselves.

Great video, Frank Turek demostrates that we are all sinful by speaking about a ticker tape. He says that if we think that we are not sinful, then to ask ourselves if we want a ticker tape of our thoughts running across our foreheads. I am sure I am not the only one, who would NOT be alright with that. Yet, God does have access to that. He knows our inmost thoughts and has since the creation. I am so glad that even with that. He willed, from all eternity that Jesus would still come and pay the price for those sins. He knows us so intimately and still provided a way out for us. What a majestic God we serve.

Good day Dr. Bridges, a brother from South Africa here. Thank you for your message, I appreciate it a lot. Especially with regards to the notion of privacy, that is something that has really opened up some stuff for me. I never really thought about it that way, even though it seems so obvious. It is difficult to process that stuff if you want to keep it internal... The anger, disbelief and frustration. But God knows it anyway so it just shows our own foolish exercise in futility if we don't want to speak to Him in the open about it. Just wanted to say thank you and this has given me some things to seriously think about.
P.S. send my regards to Dr. Richard Howe at the seminary! "From a fellow Hebdomad" (He'll know what it will mean 😄)

When I think of human "autonomy," I'm always led to the Reformed view (or presuppositionalist view) that we are not autonomous, including relating to free will. I like what you are saying here, as it doesn't go so far as to say that God is also responsible for the choices we make. I absolutely agree that God can see everything, knows everything, and we can hide nothing from Him; but I also fall into the camp that God allows us some "autonomy" relating to free will (though perhaps "autonomy" isn't the right word).

100% agree. We have freedom to choose (God is not deterministic). I guess I meant it more as "our dependence on God implies obligations in our actions" that is, we can't just do whatever we want autonomously. But you're right, as I was editing it struck me that I hadn't been clear in that distinction. Thanks for watching/commenting.

      Good afternoon. Greetings from Holland.
After a life of serving HasHem (God) in all various way, thinking, seeking and walking in faith, the big questions stayed the same. Seeking answers. We simply don't get them. And I know now why. I had all thinkable functions, from exorcist, healings, preachings and so on. Half a centery. Bathing in a bath of miracles. I can't help it, it just happened. Was given. But, when I got an experience conform Near Death Experiencers, all the big why's went away. A dimension só full of Light and unexpressable Love opened. All questions vanised.
RUclips: Present: 'Beverly Brodsky Near Death Experience' shows how it goes. After 1976 I serged almost 7000 NDE's. Interviewed people and it chanced my personal life complete. It is now non- theological. This is the chanced in which Paul wrote 1 Corintians 13 after his NDE. (When he was stoned to death) [not Acts 9] RUclips has thousands upon thousands NDE stories. Interesting. Non religious. Just truth that filled theological emptyness.
After NDE study we understand the words of Jesus so much better. God is so much bigger than all gospels ever written.
      Shalom to you!
