Hiked it when I was 12,only my brother, and my cousin ,and uncle.Back in 1961 never needed permits, and only the hermit of Kalalau ,a Dr.Wheatley lived there in the big cave on the beach. Then on the way out,us kids ran from Kalalau all the way to first valley,Hanakapiai.
Just came across (and watched your video). Brought back many memories for me. I and and 8 others trekked this trail back in June of 1972. Courtesy of Uncle Sam. I was stationed at Schofield Barracks at the time. Assigned to the 25th Infantry Division 3rd Battalion 13th Field Artillery. In 1971 we took military rafts further north. See and stayed places (few at that time) did. I do have pictures of Napali and our trip. I remember staying at an isolated beach and seeing a worn rock with (I believe) the 6 names of others who were there in June of 1922. If anyone would confirm this. It would be appreciated. I am now 68 years old and love to share my memories of Hawaii. Thank you for the memories and letting me add this comment for your viewers. If you ever have a chance to go there and do the hike........do "NOT' pass up the chance. Beautiful. Pat S.P.S. I was born and raised in Wisconsin.
My husband and I just got our permits and are going in September. Crawler’s Ledge has me freaked out a bit, but after seeing your video, I am thinking I CAN do it! Praying for good weather❤️
Thanks for posting this It brought back great memories. I lived on Kauai for 12 years and hiked the trail many times. Well worth hiking up into the valley while you are out there, Watching the part at Crawlers Ledge with that music was scarier than actually doing it!
You can definitely pass Crawlers Edge! Remember, take your time and attempt the hike during good weather. It's now been one year since our hike of a lifetime and we are SO HAPPY we shared this experience together. So Go!
My husband and I were going to do this many years ago in our late 30's but the trail was closed due the rains. Can't do this now...too old but thank for it because it would have been a great experience that I would have never known if it wasn't for you.
Nice video. Just got back from Kauai and was traveling with a group of people who hate hiking so I did the first 4 miles to the waterfall. I really wanted to keep going but I couldn't go any further without a permit. I want to go back next year and do the whole thing. Thanks again for the post, it makes me miss Kauai even more :(
Hello Aaron, I'm happy you enjoyed our adventure. I would definitely encourage you to make the trip! Let me know if you need any advice. Take Care, Tope
❤️Love❤️love❤️love❤️ this video!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Would love to hike to the Kalalau Valley as you have done! The first time we tried to hike the Kalalau Trail it was too rainy and slippery so we had to turn back. Fortunately on our second attempt it was sunny. We only hiked the first 2 miles and it was stunningly beautiful!!! We wish we had gone further to Hanakapi’ai Beach. We loved the other hikes we did on Kauai too! Kauai is such an amazing place. Would love to do the entire trip next time we visit. I have been apprehensive about going through Crawler’s Ledge after I saw a picture of a woman holding on to a rope and barely any trail! So this video was really helpful to see what Crawler’s Ledge is actually like. All the best!!!
I would love to go to that beach! It's a true paradise! but i think it is a very, very dangerous hike I could never attempt it plus i have a huge fear of heights .. Maybe i can get there by boat? I am so happy you all made it safe and are having a time people dream about! You all are Super Incredible!!!
I’ve hiked the entire trail in the pounding rain to where the entire trail was a slush mud river-ish muck. It’s another story how I got past the raging hanakapi’i 🌧 . When I got to the valley the rain stopped and the sun burst out to greet me! ☀️
C'est LaVie how long did it take to walk the crawlers edge???? This video wasn’t so bad but other videos have my heart pounding just by watching. Going in December 😧
Silver LALA I can’t exactly remember how long it took for crawlers ledge. It’s been awhile. However, I’ve hiked it 9 times by myself and never remember it being that bad. It’s just if you have a heavy backpack and it’s really windy don’t rush. I never wore hiking boots. I use tabis. Those are reef walkers sold at Longs drug store in Lihue. They aren’t pretty but easier to grip over the slippery root places and you can walk through the streams with them. It’s a better grip than stiff hiking boots. I cut out an insert from my running shoes to put in them for more support. You’ll be fine as long as you’re not afraid of heights and take it slow. It’s not all that bad unless pouring rain and windy. If the weather makes that area feel unsafe just use good judgment ...but don’t panic. Hundreds of people safely hike that trail. That ledge is not a very long area. You’ll LOVE this adventure!!!! God Bless ❤️ 🌴 ☀️ 🌊
What a great video. Love this aspect from Start to Finish. Loved seeing my beloved fave place, Kauai...airport and all. Glad all went great for you all! Your packs looked a little big, but I guess you all could handle them well. Did you have enough items or could do without anything? Happy 40th Patty!....are those girls sisters? You guys have some cute ladies!.......Take care...share more!
Thank you for watching our Kauai adventure. Our REI 45 Liter backpacks were the perfect size for our two-night camping trip. The girls are best friends and will be happy to hear about your sweet comment. All the best, Todd
Thanks so much for the video! I am doing this hike with my partner next month and he knows I do not like hikes. Most videos, pictures, and articles I read about Crawler's Edge makes my anxiety skyrocket. However, after watching your video, it really helped ease it (for the most part...still a bit anxious). It doesn't look as narrow as my crazy mind makes it out to be. I also really appreciate your use of a "regular" video camera vs a GoPro. The GoPros make it seem way scarier, steeper, and narrower. I am very careful and now have more confidence in doing that part of the hike. Quick question - some say there is a part about a mile after Crawler's Edge that was also a bit treacherous, like it was loose red clay/soil. What was your experience?
Did you do it yet? Crawlers ledge used to freak me out too but I realized there's plenty of just as sketch spots that don't SEEM sketch so in a way crawlers is one of the least sketchy since you have awareness of it. Hanakapiai crossing to space rock is always my least fave and my friend fell of space rock once with me right there so his backpack caught him. Be aware take care :D
if you don't know that streams not only depend on the rain, but also can build up a small dam upstream, and this dam break down and you will be flushed by water in 5 seconds.
Hello Eli, thank you for watching our video. Walking a slow and steady pace you should be able to complete Crawlers Ledge in 10 minutes (each way). Let me know if you have any other questions. Aloha
Thanks for posting. Haven't seen the whole video so please forgive me if I am asking what might seem like an obvious question. Did you go both directions in the same day? Also, what time of year is this?
Trail is currently CLOSED due to flooding. "Closures will likely be for an extended period of time, as damage assessments and repairs must be completed."
Loved your video. Had everyone in my family watch too. We're excited to be hiking the "Kal-al-al-al" trail next Wednesday. To remember this family trip, I'd like to get everyone a matching necklace. You guys apparently did something similar too. I looked all over the internet, and can't find anything that looks like the ones you guys got. Where did you get them? Hopefully somewhere on Kauai? Let me know. And thanks again for the great inspirational video!
Hello Bill, Thank you for watching our video. You and your family will absolutely all the challenges and rewards the Kalalau Trail offers. Let me know I can answer any questions. Here is a link to the company that created our custom necklace. www.myintent.org/ All the best, Todd
Thanks, Todd! We are totally going to get four of these. We loved our trip to Kauai and hiking the Kalal-la-la-la trail. We searched the island's jewelry stores for two weeks focused on finding that exact necklace and were disappointed when we couldn't find them. My girls will be so excited when I send it to them. Thanks again for the great video.
Late reply but.....There is no official check in station but at times there is a DLNR official at the trailhead stopping anyone with overnight gear and checking for permits. Occasionally DLNR goes into the valley and cites anyone back there without a permit. There have been issues with people living back there and trashing the place. They've hauled out tons of trash that gets left behind.
Bro thx for saying that at the end of crawlers ledge, im going and I keep trippin on that ledge. I feel better now. If you and wifee did it, I can do it.
@@iGolfValueGuide Were you using any special lens? From about 12:30 to 13:10, after completing crawlers Ledge the first time, it almost looks like you're getting some kind o 3D affect
Nice video! Thank you! I enjoyed this trail too! Almost fell off the cliff like 3 times, hiked it half of the trail at night. Check out my Hawaii video on my channel
I cannot believe that I did it. Should I have seen the video before it would be impossible for me to do it. When I was there on the cliff there was no way to stop and go back.
It felt like you were talking to me when you said "U CAN DO IT" Thank you!!!

Also doing this for my 40th. I can't wait!
Why am I nervous just watching this from home? My legs are wobbling!
Not alone, my palms were sweaty!!
Great job! Very inspiring. My daughter and I want to do this but we weren't sure about Crawlers trail. You've convinced us we can do it. Thanks!
Glad to hear you and your daughter are going to hike the Kalalau Trail. Let me know if you have any uestions. All the best!

Great video - just in Kauai - that hike is way too much for me - but loved the great videos. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for watching. :)
I'm really enjoying your video!
nicely done - good job in the video production.
Good job making the hike safely!
Loved your video!!! I hiked about 4 miles but never all the way. When I go back I will try ta make it farther.

Incredible footage! Thanks for sharing, I thought Patty was your wife.
When in the year did you guys do this? Not sure when is the driest month. Looks amazing!
That’s a really treacherous hike when the trail is wet . Some parts scared the heck out of me.
Im writing a song about the hike, thx bro.

Total time for this hike? Round trip ? If anyone know..

Put together a slideshow from the pictures I had from June 1972. "Kalalau Trail Kauai 1972" RUclips channel germandog 9172
When I did it, the fog was so thick we couldn't see the water. We had maybe 10' visibility and that's being generous.

wow, I just got dizzy from watching on min 11, the views though!
Noticed you couldn’t keep the camera off Patti, I don’t blame you. She is quite delicious.
what month of the year was this?? thanks for the video!
Thank you for watching! February 2017
February 2017, it's been one year and our group definitely misses Kalalau.
What shoes are the ladies wearing?
What’s the site for the permit??
what resort were you staying at? looks nice!
Grand Hyatt in Poipu
we kayaked in. I was too scared to hike.
I will do this trail in a wheelchair next week
Showdown wow!!! I want to see that video. U r amazing
Oh no! I hope you didn’t do it?! Are you ok?
I didn't see a boat. How did the surfer get out there?
Travel's All I Got - I believe the old surfing board was left behind for visitors to use.
Kalalau Beach had one old surfboard which was used by anyone at the campsites.
