    The sound wich you hear at 2:04 is the synchonisation to the grid, this happens via a automated device wich is detecting the grid and generator frequency and the phase position, when the phase positions are equal then the grid contactor gets closed. The contactor needs time to close, because of that the controler will trigger the closing a bit to early wich makes the wiing sound. The critical thing is, if you miss the point to synchonise you have to slow down the turbine, thats more difficult as to start. The typical synchronisation point is 1530 - 1545 RPM at Generator at 50 Hz grid frequenzy. After synchronisation the generator will run at 1550 RPM.

      Isn't it a dc generator, then why it needs to be synchronized? I thought that some inverters do the job.

      @@el9551 Only some brands use variable speed dc gens. (Enercon).

    One of the better videos of this type. You can see the increase in shaft speed between the rotor and the generator via the gearbox, and then an outside shot for good measure. We can even see the brake disc and caliper. Good Job.

    Even when knowing that the reducer has a gearing ratio of 1:60-1:100, it's still surprising to see how fast can the 24rpm of the blades make the generator shaft turn.

    is there a safety feature that will quickly bring the blades to neutral or heavy pitch if the gearbox would break, the winds suddenly pick up, or the hydraulic motor would fail to operate?

      The pitch system is the main brake. If anything goes wrong or the wind increases over capacity the blades will pitch to 90 degrees under battery power (running position is around 0 degrees). Air resistance will slow the rotor down dramatically and then the hydraulic brake will do the rest. The hydraulic brake is similar to what a car has as a braking system.
      Edit: Some turbines are hydraulic pitch instead of battery (electric) pitch. They move the blades via hydraulic ram.

    I love the sound when get switched to full load. Only issue they should have wait for a nother couple of seconds to allow the output to speed up to working speed then switch the load on.

    I'm not sure I like the idea of the brake being on the alternator side of the transmission. If the transmission fails, the ONLY chance you have of controlling rotor speed, is to pitch the blades.(feather them into the wind) If the transmission failure caused damage to the pitch actuator, you've got a run-away on your hands!

      I think the same. there should be a way to put the gearbox in neutral (like a car) to stop from generating power and also lock the blades from the blade side. We already saw in case of tornado the disc braking system is useless

      its an active stall wind turbine, so it only has movable tips. there is likely 0% of a chance that a fail will damage the actuator (Which automatically puts out the tips in case of a pressure loss). If its a hard damaged like this, there is a high chance of everything falling apart in general.

    Wind turbines are torque monsters (look at shaft dia at 3:28). They produce massive torque at low speed and hence a speed multiplier gear box is used to run a practical alternators. If we have to couple wind turbines directly to alternator, the anternator will have huge diameter with so many poles, making it impractical.
    0:13 = Disc brakes to stop the turbines when the wind speed it too high.

      Ja, grundsätzlich schon, aber die Sicherheitsvorkehrungen bei "Gästen" sind recht hoch, daher muss man da etwas Zeit mit bringen. Zudem solltest du nicht unbedingt über 120kg wiegen, wenigstens etwas Sportlich sein, weder Raumangst noch Höhenangst haben oder gerne mal Reisekrank werden, wobei dazu gibt es Vomex, je nachdem auf welchen Typ Anlage man ist. Da gibt es nämlich unglaublich viele Unterschiede.

      Kannste machen, bringt aber nur, dass die Stromversorgung bei dem Wind nicht wegfaellt.
      Die kWh wird damit teurer (bisschen mehr Produktion, viel mehr Investition).

      It is the brake that keeps the turbine on a constant speed.. And if it goes faster than the normal and this brake can't keep it, it activates the emergency brake and stops the turbine :)

      No, that's not true. The DISK BRAKE is for stopping the turbine. At this (older) turbine there is a asynchronous generator, wich run at CONSTANT speed by the 50-Hz-GRID!

      Based on the input and output spinning in the same direction it is a 2-stage; the small blade rotor diameter and the small generator it is likely 1:60-1:80 at the highest.

    Over engineered piece of crap meant to break and maintain Just because the horizontal axis worked on old wooden wind mills won't necessarily work on modern ones High speed rotating components ,breaking system all those moving parts mean lots of maintenance and work The worst of all is the gearbox

      As long as the wind speed isn't above safe limits, it's perfectly OK to be up there. Once the wind exceeds a certain speed, then, OSHA will not allow occupancy of the nacelle. That wind speed varies from site to site, so I can't give you an actual wind speed. (usually 30 MPH or less)

    Is the rotor always on the same gear ratio? when wind speed goes up, how does the frequentie stay 50 Hz.
    And how can you increase the power output on the same frequentie? (Bigger ampere? so coils of generator closer to rotor?)

      @@dickievanleijen1545 The generator has a variable electromagnetic field. If the wind increases, the rotor speed increases, the RPM increases - so the control increases the generator field strength which makes it convert more mechanical into electrical energy. As a result, the load on the rotor increases as well and it slows down. So higher wind speeds result in higher power output at the same RPM.
