- Time to do some shelf shifting! What's shelf-shifting? Shelf shifting is when you have to move a bunch of books around to maintain your self-imposed ordering system and still have room for new additions. All readers and collectors will face this task eventually...

After more than four decades collecting and reading comicbooks and related pop culture (TV, movies, video games, etc) as of 2022 I am sharing reviews/overviews of my collection. The plan is at least one new video every Monday!

I'm surprised that you'd leave a full shelf empty for Brubaker! He's only releasing around two books a year, and they're all pretty slim, so that shelf could take 10 years to fill 😂

Great idea for a video, Larry. I’m at an age where I’ve decided to not buy more shelves. Instead, when I run out of space, I cull my collection and give away some books to clear shelf space. I’ve reread everything (sometimes several times) by this point that I’ve had for a few years, so I just pick to give away the books that I don’t think I’ll reread yet again. So far, that’s worked well for me. I still create enough space for new stuff and haven’t yet regretted giving anything away.
Thanks for watching! I expect this will happen for me too....eventually. I don't plan to extend past this one room (except for my Tolkien shelf which is by desk in the bedroom). I have a few more places in this room where I can add some more shelves....and then that will be it. Then the culling may have to occur!
I think the easiest answer to this conundrum is simply to continue adding new rooms to your house and making "Indie Shelve Deux" 🤷♂
I'm not sure what I consider Indie these days. I never considered Image or Dark Horse Indie... and as the years have passed, I don't consider even Boom! or IDW or Dynamite or Fantagraphics or Valiant or several others, Indie. Once you get a certain market share and I can find your stuff in Barnes & Nobel, it is hard for me to call it Indie, personally.
The only one way I know to really tell if you're an Indie book is if it doesn't have a barcode on it. That way, you know it was a vanity passion project, or a small print run through an obscure publisher or something kickstarted on your own. That doesn't mean it's the only thing that is an "Indie" book... just a good way to know it is in an Indie book. It was not created for the mass market.

Rick Remender is my favorite! I have every book of his I can get aside of Strange Girl, and some singles I can't find online. His 3 current series are all great and I've collected the singles until current,The Sacrificers, The Holy Roller,Napalm Lullaby and coming out the 29th I'll get Grommets, Lemire is my second favorite, I love his art too, Something about the simpleness of it I think is great, so I prefer when he is the artist as well but haven't disliked a book yet by any of these two, nice job Larry and thanks for the video

I built the shelves into the wall when we built the house.

It's a constant evolution. I've settled on some creator owned shelves as well, but I actually took it a step further and only allow single creator books in that area. So it's become the auteur section! Any publisher is okay, so long as it's a single creator vision (okay, to be fair I'm not counting colourists or letterers). So DWJ's WW: Dead Earth and Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier from DC are in there alongside Charles Burns, Chris Ware, etc. Lemire is in there too - but again only the books he's created on his own (so Black Hammer, Descender, etc. are shelved elsewhere).

I'm always shuffling and it's a pain because I'm running out of room as well. The downfalls of being a comic connoisseur 😂
Then we have to start really deciding on what is good enough to STAY in the collection I guess!

Did you build these shelves? Would love to see a video about the actual shelving you use!
I did....with some help from my Father-In-Law. But it was all my design. I wish I had took some footage/pics of the build process. But it was before I had the channel. I am working on a sequel video though where I built a couple more shelves. I DID take pics and footage this time though!

@@LarrysLibrary A few days ago my shop let me know that I'd ordered the latest Saga issue on Previews. I reminded them that I"d dropped it over a year ago. Since Saga has been on hiatus, yet again, they'd forgotten to take it off. The owner joked with me if I was sure about dropping it, since I continued to read it to annoy friends and acquaintances who adored the series, the same ones who for a couple of years had told me I must read it. Careful what you wish for:)

@@LarrysLibrary BKV, my nemesis, said Saga would be over 100 issues. At this rate, with a 3 and half year hiatus, followed by even more months off (a Saga issue hasn't come out since last year), it will likely finish in 2030. At my shop only 3 people have it on their pull list. And no one asks for the trades. Amazing given that before the 3 year hiatus it was a top seller. Many readers dropped off and didn't come back.
