    Its a vatting of ex-bourbon and ex-Madeira casks that have matured (respectively) a minimum of 14 years. Richard Seale is on record saying that he did not want to mention the Madeira because people would automatically assume it is a finish.

      @WhiskyLock  7 месяцев назад +3

      Thanks for the info. I was worried that the madeira had been dropped when I couldn't find any mention of it on my box or label but you can certainly still taste it and I love it! Slightly disappointing that Foursquare are deliberately only giving us half of the details... not sure why they couldn't have stated it exactly as you just did 🤷‍♂️

    Thanks for sharing your rum enthusiasm, Shane! I just enjoyed an interesting rum tasting with some weird, gruesome, nice and totally delicious drams. Besides the really good Pusser's Deptford Dockyard Reserve the highlight for me was a Foursquare 13 year Single Cask IB by Anam na H-Alba at 63.9%. It had a really complex, rich spectrum of glue, lovage, estragon, bourbon cask, coconut, wine gums, spice (sold out, but was somewhat less than your 14 - top price for which is € 63 in Germany). It sure gives an alternative nose and palate to Scotch. Not always for me, but lots of fun once in a while!

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  7 месяцев назад +1

      Rum really has a very diverse set of flavour profiles. I always think of Scotch as being quite diverse compared to spirits like Brandy and Bourbon but when you look at the difference between something like a navy rum and a clairin there's often little resemblance! And yes those funk bombs and fruit bombs are a lot of fun when you're in that mood 🙂

    Thanks for reviewing this one Shane! Doorly's 14 is already on my "to buy" list. I like Madeira casks for maturing too. Madeira adds different flavours but is light enough to not overwhelm the spirit. Cheers!

    I e-mailed them about using madeira in 12yo and they confirmed that. And I definitely can taste it.
    This is probably the same situation with the 14yo.

    • @andypike1234
      @andypike1234 7 месяцев назад +2

      About higher abv. I had a bottle of Foursquare 12 (2008) in 60% and for me it was undrinkable. Just too strong. I could enjoy whiskies that were even stronger but from whatever reason this was just too much. Maybe it wouldn´t be for you but I think that 48% is the magical number here.
      I used that Foursquare mainly as a blender for 12yo when I wanted to spice it up a little.
      I´m from Slovakia and I can buy samples of Foursquares from Czech republic. Maybe check around Britain for some websites which offer samples.

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  7 месяцев назад +2

      I've had that experience too with some rums. But then others, including some unaged overproofs, have been fine. It's very odd and counterintuitive to me and my experience with whisky. I do think that 48% is the magic number with rum as you say. It generally has that perfect balance of value for money and intensity that you get from most whisky at 46%.

    Great review mate and really good tasting notes. It's a top quality rum indeed. Regarding pricing in the UK, £75 seems to be the norm on a lot of online sites, however if you are willing to hunt around I can see that you can still pick this up for under £60 on 1 site and around £65 or less on a few sites. Possibly older batches but for sure the quality will be the same 🥃

    Great review. I agree with all that youy say. Having recently opened a bottle of Foursquare 12 I'm here to say that you're not missing anything if you get the Doorly's 14 instead. Unfortunately, the price has crept up as you say. It was £60 not that long ago and I'll lose interest if it goes any higher. WT

      No wrong choice really. I think you'd love both. RL Seales = superb bourbon matured rum. Doorly's 14 = ultra juicy and fruity rum. If both sound good to you then sure you can save some money with the Seales. Both is also a good choice if they're both on offer and you can afford it though. They're entirely different after all 👍

    Hi Shane... love the channel. Perhaps a stupid question here - but as a scotch enthusiast who is keen to spend a little on something 'rum' to sip and wrap my head around, would you recommend this versus the Hampden 8 year? My favourite bottles at present vary from Craigellachie 13, Gel Garioch 12 and Laphroaig Cask strength depending on the mood. I know the Doorly's and the Hampden seem very different... but as someone who enjoys a little moreish 'dirt' do you think the Hampden is a little too far for a first rum dive for me, versus the Doorlys which appears a little more approachable.?

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks Joseph! There are no stupid questions in spirits... only stupid prices 😂
      Unless you really want to get something funky then I'd go with Doorlys 14. They're both great but I really, really like Doorlys 14 and I can't really imagine anyone not getting along with it.
      Also, Hampden 8 isn't even THAT funky in the grand scheme of things. So while it's a good introduction to Jamaican funk and a good rum, if you're really after an eccentric rum then maybe look at independent bottlings of Worthy Park and Long Pond with a high ester count. They're very good and cheaper than high ester Hampden.
      But yes, as an early introduction to quality rum I don't think you can go wrong with Doorlys 14. Cheers 🥃

    Hey Shane! This one is expensive here in Greece but the 12 Year old is in a fair price. What’s your opinion on Doorly’s 12 year old? Have you tried it? Is it worth a purchase?

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi! The 12 is a fine rum, as is Doorlys XO. Sadly you don't get the full intensity of flavour from either that you get from the 14yo but they are very enjoyable and will give you a good idea if the 14 is something you'd like.
      Just be aware that some very old stock of the XO and 12 may be 40%. Try to at least get the newer 43%. Cheers 🥃
