Same man, i just had my first game in an 11 side and we lost 7-1 (not all of the goals were my fault, but some were, especially in the first half) and this video has def helped me
There was a video promoting small sided games for kids, and they put adults on a full sized field to scale as if they were 12. The goal was ENORMOUS. A goal is huge for an adult at normal scale, but man, if you are a kid . . . nuts.
Funny you mention that. That's what I was originally planning on filming this day but the field randomly took away all the corner flag which I was going to use for the walls. If they magically return I'll def be filming that one soon.
Go to the post nearest to where the ball is at, stare parallel to the post and look at the ball, position the furthest left or furthest right wall player to be right in front of the ball so the opponent can’t kick the ball straight at you, and since your Wall is covering that side of the goal, position yourself towards the center of the other side which is unguarded. Hope this helped!
@@jacoblehr3064 U have to place the people in the ball correctly, too. If the free kick taker is curling the ball from the middle to the posts, you have to place the talles player on the wall on the inside-most position
When I was younger I always made the mistake of getting sucked off of my post trying to be too aggressive on the cut back balls instead of holding my post. Good video
I like to use a really long kite string, tie it to both posts, loop the center around a stick, and run it out to show keepers how to adjust their positioning as the ball moves around the field. I try to have them be a power step away from the string on both sides. I've not really thought about the reaction time issue though. Thanks for bringing that into the equation.
these videos are so helpful! I played keep for the second time yesterday and knowing where to be helped me a make a few saves I did however dive headfirst into one of the goalposts by accident
Hey I came back to this video and watch it and this was really useful because I did an appointment for a tryout in the la Liga academy and I impressed everyone even the coach with a lower 90 save this is all because of my positioning this really did help thanks a lot
When my kid started playing goalie in the 5th grade I was telling him the same stuff you did but I knew nothing about soccer at the time. Who knew I was teaching him correctly. Haha! One of his coaches was impressed with him and asked if I trained him. I said no. He just doesn't have enough sense to get out of the way. Haha. He got a lot of compliments and people were saying he knew how to position himself and stuff. A teammate's sister who played high school goalie even offered to train him because she saw something in him but he was too shy to train with her.
That kind of relieved me a bit, because I got beaten near post 2 times in the past 4 weeks and thought it was my fault. Maybe the shot was too fast or powerful and that's why the ball went in. Really bothers me how heavily goalkeepers get criticised by people who have never played in such a position. Give us a break!!! Thanks a lot for uploading
Yeah but for crosses and corners, I see keepers get close to the striker that's about to get the ball, and spread their body to try to make a block, when the attacker is clearly getting the header or volley at close distance, so I guess dropping back may not be the only option facing these balls.
When I transitioned from 7 to 11, my nemesis wasn't positioning/dives but corners/centers. Can you provide some insights over there on another vid? Thanks!!
I'm a 6'1 keeper with rly long arms kinda like a 6'5 wingspan so sometimes I feel like I don't have to dive and I can just reach over so my dive is kinda akward but I always make sure I land on my side. But I struggle with landing fully extended how can I get rid of this fear
I try to keep some momentum through the dive to keep moving on impact with the ground. A sudden stop will hurt but a roll or spread after impact helps dissipate the energy much more
I have been watching your videos for quite some time although I have just subscribed recently. I gotta agree with everything you are saying. When I played back in 9th grade I was the best goalkeeper in school and me and my friends would often go and play with other schools in my city but as I got in highschool I lost most of my reflexes cuz I didn’t play as much. I am 19 years old now in university and have just started to play once a week with my friends. I have never joined any training football club or anything and I have learned everything on my own. Just wanna say that all your videos are really helpful regarding new goalkeepers and I just wish I knew about them sooner cuz I would have improved faster haha😂 Thank you for the videos and keep up the great work man🙏. ( Hope Croatia can be finalists in the World Cup yet again 🇦🇱❤️🇭🇷)
Gouliremi we lost 7 - 0 to a great league team, all blame is on me, I kept the line properly, pundits were keeon telling come foreward "penalty area is yours" to get chipped in those times is hard to digest, need good sleep ,Dr Indian🇮🇳
Near post observation is right on! In game theory they would say you have to try to find the optimum of mixed strategies. I do cheat toward the near post as I have more time to save a ball that crosses to the far post as it crosses past my body, but any keeper does that. Another thing about coming out to reduce the angle is if the player gets the shot off while you are moving. If the player has really good control of the ball at the time with it close to his feet, I do not come out.
On the point about cutting down the angle, in that scenario, it just comes down to the goalkeepers decision making and deciding whether to drop back and take a shot, or to charge up for the 1v1
Does it change for futsal keepers I think we have an 8 by 10 goal and the D area is smaller making the shots closer in distance from keeper than in football
I would just argue that, since the near post is closer and you have less time to react, you should be positioning SLIGHTLY more towards the near post, forcing a tougher shot on the far post. But in general everything you say is absolutely right
I beg to differ, put your feet in a 90 degree angle forcing the attackers to the sideline like the defenders do then when the striker suprised and he has made his decision at that time when it's too late for him to change his mind you close that gap the key is reading forcing him to go one way just controlling him which will allow you a head start which will allow you to start before he has actually kicked the ball pay attention to when he hits the ball and how far away he taps it from his feet if he touches is pretty like when he's at speed this is your time. Play with his feet this will help you to mess with his mind only the best players keep composure over the total situation in fact they do the same thing they take control over the situation. as a goalkeeper you have the advantage that you have to pay attention to less factors then the attacker take advantage of his confusion this . Also keep in mind that the attacker is acting and u are reacting this means that you are a bit slower thus your reaction time. You're the best hope is to either predict or take control over the situation. Cruyff said they eat the way they play aggressive and chewing fast as a goalkeeper take that mentality and put it in everything u do. is bestIf you are an attacker then wait for him to commit for example step forward then fake and go the other way. If the cure keeper comes out then just move sideways a bit, if you invest time then it's always a good idea to move sideways a little bit the total surprises if you cop the ball back 5° they never take in acount this and it increases the angle allowing you to let the ball roll a bit further until the angle is the angle is right and thus you have control over the situation basically do what I explained for the goalkeeper but the other way 5:49

6.41 ... better to be far out at 5 or 6 ... yes ist difficullt to be a goalkeeper , but you will save more ..... 3 yard is not good at all ...unless you have alot of legpower to push you away ... i like goalkeepers with fast reaction that stand and save fotballs on the right position - good video otherwise
I don't understand why you wouldn't step out a few feet to close the triangle gap to the posts. I'm not talking yards where they might kick it over your head, but even if you risk the over the head goal, the odds are low for that shot. It is important to note that 99% of the viewers of this video are NOT professionals, so the notion of an amateur threading the ball over the top is slim.

I agree with you
I think that last minute Alan McGregor save last night is one of several saves that prove how vital great positioning is.
100%! If he took even one more step forward before that header I don't think he would have had time to get a hand on that ball.
Can we also get a video on setting up walls based on free kick positions.

Is there any drills you could do to practice positioning with just 2 people, or maybe even just 1? Great vid.

I guess it depends on how much of a chance the keeper has of getting to the ball before anyone else.
