    I am gonna be honest, I have been listening to this group since their Queendom era and these are the things that I noticed -
    When I was not much aware of pop, the only girl group name I heard was Blackpink and Twice. I was not much interested in Kpop at that moment, but when I heard Red Velvet, I was drowned in their music. I was like WTF......how is this group not at the top? why does everyone not know about this group just like BP and Twice? I wish that I had known them much before.
    I still don't understand why this group is not at the top. It's not just the title track, but their b-sides also sound better than most groups' title tracks. This group is just out of this world and still unrecognized. This group literally has everything, vocals, visuals, choreo, best MV's, literally everything. I don't want to hurt anyone but personally, I feel Red Velvet's music, vocals, MV's, and b-sides, are far better than any other group.
    I just wish these girls get the exposure they deserve.

    Red Velvet is HUGE. They hold/break streaming records, album selling records, they have tons of brand deals (especially Irene), they act, etc. But like Oslem said, they don't seem big bc they are not promoted as much on the Western scene. SM is terrible at promoting them in general. In terms of Queendom, not that that's a bad song but I think that Luvies were expecting more from them after Psycho. So after Joy and Wendy's solos and then Feel My Rhythm came out, it seems like "ah yes, here's red velvet."

    red velvet are HUGE huge but honestly if sm had invested more in red velvet promotions they would be more popular internationally right now. that doesn't mean they're not recognized tho like red velvet are known for their harmony and discography, wendy as best kpop vocalist seulgi best all-rounder within kpop in general. so many of their title tracks get labelled as soty by even non-fans. they can be more popular of course but they are in a really good position. they're counted among the top ggs of 3rd gen with bp and twice tho not as known as them but they're def not far behind. speaking from my personal bias they should be the even more popular like the music is god tier.

  • @codename-pi
    @codename-pi 2 года назад +338

    Long story short about RV's position in the industry is that SM always tend to give them the short end of the stick, eversince their debut. 2014 was so messy for SM and they had to rush RV debut, and then SM probably didn't expect RV to be doing this well in the industry. Because, contrary to the global promotions of other SM groups you might have heard, RV (and EXO) is the one that's doing the best globally, despite little to zero promotions.
    But also, RV's versatile image makes it easier for SM to throw any concept at them, and then they still managed to pull it off excellently. I'd say out of the more popular groups, RV is definitely the most versatile and unexpected, and that is their strong point.
    Also, they are very popular as B-side queens, both in Korea and internationally, as their B-sides are as good as, or even better than their titles sometimes. (Hopefully you guys could check out their B-sides later on ;))

    • @xheralt
      @xheralt 2 года назад +1

      No SM group ever got the shorter end of the stick than f(x). A lot of initial resistance to RV, even among SM stans, was because of the perception that RV's debut was taking (already inadequate) resources away from f(x)! I never subscribed to that, because I liked both groups.

    I'm a reveluv so I might be a little biased. The thing with Red Velvet is that they always had stable hits (since debut, actually). They are very very famous in Korea, even with the General Public. They're known as Summer Queens in Korea, for example, i think after Power Up. Red Flavor was and is a summer anthem until now. They were invited to perform in North Korea for a diplomacy event before. Every song they release charts well and for a long time, too. Incuding b-sides. They're huge in Asia! (China, Japan, Philippines, among others).
    They're acknowledged as one of the biggest girl groups. It's true that they are not much promoted internationally - compared with other famous girl groups. SM Entertainment is the one to be blamed for that. Haha. (Just look at the amount of promo compared to others HAHA. They have less than 5 dance practice videos!) Too many missed opportunities, especially with pushing them to the Western Market. Bad Boy and Psycho are their biggest Western hits, they had sold out concert tours in US in just a few minutes, SM did not ride the wave. -_-
    They are music critics' favorites though, top tier discography. They were named by Billboard as the "best idol group alive" before, and on their 8th year they are still continuously breaking records so that's a feat that not many idol groups achieve.
    About Queendom and Feel My Rhythm. I feel like with Queendom, a lot were underwhelmed maybe because it felt safe. With FMR, it felt very Red Velvet, iykwim. Oh and another factor for a relatively smaller but solid fandom might be because of their concept switches - which is ironically what luvies love most and take pride in. (Oops that's a long read, sorry. So thankful I've stumbled upon your reaction videos!! I'm a new subscriber. Hihi)

    Red Velvet generally has a lot of casual listeners internationally and domestically. In Korea, they're considered as a group that's among the general public's picks, in a sense that most of their releases chart well.
    Most of what builds up a strong core fanbase revolves around the availability of contents (particularly those outside of music). They're not as big internationally compared to groups like Blackpink or Twice because of the lack of available and accessible contents.
    For example, their reality show, Level Up Project, is only available on obscure platforms that are region-locked so people outside Korea can't watch it, and I believe (cmiiw) that even Koreans can't watch these shows without downloading the relatively unknown apps (Oksusu/Wavve). Also, they only really started uploading additional promotional contents from 2020, so if you scroll down their group's YT channel, you'll notice that they only really used it to upload video teasers for music videos before. Even when it comes to basic promotional things like dance practice videos or jacket photoshoot behind vlogs, you'll notice the terrible lack of content prior to 2020. Since their debut in 2014, the group has had less than 5 dance practice videos - we always joke about how SM only uploads their dance practice when they move to a different building, the level of digital promotions were handled that badly by SM.
    A lot of people listen to their music casually, but it's difficult for people to actually join the fandom because there's nothing to watch if they ever get curious about the group. Despite this, they're still one of SM's most successful groups internationally.

      The casual rotating fandom is also due to the different concepts each cb and not sticking to a genre or a theme like BP or twice for that matter. Even among the fandom, the divide is seen every cb.

I was still new to kpop, and this was my stereotypical interpretation of what I thought all kpop was (super bright and colourful, a little weird and quirky), and at the time I didn’t think I would like that concept. But RV kinda challenged my expectations and opened me up to it. It is definitely a mood song though. Put it on a work out playlist or summertime playlist and you’ll have a blast. Red Velvet is #1 if you rank them in vocals, visuals, concepts, choreo, weaponry…. We have come across so many KPop reactors who claim to be KPop experts with 50+ Black Pink and Twice MVs, but no Red Velvet reactions 🤣. After reacting to them, they always say “why am I so late in discovering Red Velvet”. At least many see the extraordinary performances that they have been missing but some still can’t get over the fact that their favorite group is not the only one with talent. Many are very young toxic fans.
    Red Velvet came in with a disadvantage by having to follow the Korean favorite, Girls Generation. The public did not like anyone to come is as their replacement. Another reason for the mixed reviews were due to their very diverse concepts. If they heard a Red bubbly concept and did not care for it, they never really got a second chance. Only after following their diverse discography for a while, you start appreciating everything they do. Imagine you came across them right when they came down with, Power Up, you probably would not have shown them much interest on the following release.

    To address Esosa’s thoughts about Red Velvet’s international recognition: before I was into kpop, I actually heard about Red Velvet before I even heard about Blackpink, sometime around 2017-2018ish (around the same time I heard about Twice). They’ve collabed with some Western artists like Ellie Goulding and John Legend. I didn’t check out their music at the time, but when I started getting into kpop, I distinctly remembered hearing about them. They’ve even toured in the West as well. I think Twice and BP get more views and hype, but RV is still well appreciated.

    In terms of international, you are right Red Velvet might not be more recognized compared to BLACKPINK and TWICE non-kpop fan wise.
    BUT…I believe Red Velvet songs are the kind of songs international fans will love as experimental as it is. Songs like Ice Cream Cake, DUMB DUMB, Russian Roulette, Red Flavor, Peek-A-Boo, Bad Boy, and Psycho are songs that are highly recognized and popular..even trending/viral at those times of releases. They just forget it’s RED VELVET who sings/performs those songs. Then when they realize those songs are from RED VELVET, they’ll be like oh we should start listening to them more.
    Red Velvet has done an US tour and it was successful and made new fans. They got a good amount of exposure social media wise with doing interviews in English and some RUclips exposure too. Maybe not in the same level like other groups who go on talk shows and perform. I think it’s more of a SM media/management problem tbh. I do agree they need more international activities because they can definitely be even more popular. But alas.. it’s a SM thing. They are focused on other things and feel that other groups are more set for the US market than Red Velvet. Which is such a shame… SM should put even more effort for Red Velvet.

  • @goodmorningcrystal
    @goodmorningcrystal 2 года назад +19

    Red Velvet always try something new. They constantly have a different concept. They are willing to experiment with sometimes fantastic reception and other times not so much but they exude versatility and fearlessness. Groups like BP and Twice stay loyal to their sound. And fans have grown to really love that. BP with their dance/hip-hop/pop style and twice with their colourful and bright/sweet tunes that just make you happy. And people like to know what they are getting into so I feel it makes both of those groups seem to have more stability within the music and their fans. Nothing wrong with either way people just like consistency. All groups are incredibly talented and deserve vast recognition.
    I hope that made sense. Sorry for the poorly constructed essay.

    they really are the top 3 girl groups in korea and i understand what you say when you talked about how it doesn’t look like it. the big difference is that SM doesn’t really promote them as they should outside korea you know? i think they could get bigger and bigger internationally with a push from their company. although i don’t think people would be so open to their constant change of concepts. here we have a pretty good example, bad boy did so well internationally then we got power up right after it and people hate it because they expected red velvet to keep doing the same sound and mature concept as bad boy. while the general audience didn’t enjoy power up, in korea it’s definitely one of their biggest hits so this duality can be hard to people understand but i personally love and it’s what makes me obsessed with their discography… it’s the unknown of what will come next that makes me so excited every time!!!

    SM is so stupid for not promoting them in the US. They gave them the velvet side which is heavily R&B (the 90's early 2000s type) and Bad Boy English Version went viral at KCON NY in 2018 but SM missed the gold chance to push them. No logic other than they never planned them to succeed much. Jokes on SM, Red Velvet is still their most streamed act on global Spotify and their US kpop fanbase is strong

    ok first thank you so much for making these videos, it's been really cool to watch and reminding me why i love this group so much
    second, I understand what you mean!! red velvet is a very very famous group in korea, it's insane how much they sell and are acclaimed
    internationally they are acclaimed musically very strong, mainly because of the vocals and their different concepts, even with the lack of publicity from SM they manage to get very good tops on the charts
    The lack of publicity outside of Korea is all SM's fault, they are very well liked abroad by critics, billboard always writes very well about them and has already called them "the best idol group alive". Unfortunately SM is more focused on promoting their boy groups out there, missing the chance to grow even more with red velvet.

    I have always though RV got a little less attention in the 3rd gen wave coming up outside of Korea (with the bubbly concepts being the rage), even though they had momentum with all the early releases, as stated above they are god tier within Korea with the traditional beauty visuals (Irene got an ovation from the crowd in North Korea just for breathing into a mic), vocals, and original Kpop sound on the red side. The Velvet side really started to pick them up in the states (for me anyway, over you tube), all the way through Psycho, and then Wendys accident really put them on hold. I think that year long hiatus really killed their upward trajectory outside Korea and now they get kind of lost in the new generation groups with all the talent out there now. Easily a top 3 group for me as well. Just my opinion from the outside :)

  • @trouvaille1558
    @trouvaille1558 2 года назад +2

    lol actually among those relatively bigger groups internationally, digitally and domestically red velvet clears in ease, they're literally called digimons (digital monsters) by koreans because their audience are literally the general public + their fans. so to answer your question objectively, red velvet was and still on the top 3 with bp and twice. popularity wise they come after them as they have little to zero western promotions, while musically they're much more critically acclaimed.

  • @ajsymm

  • @ambergaming6767

    i completely agree with esosa that like red velvet not being as popular as twice and blackpink are internationally is so weird and confusing. you'll hear general kpop fans and even some locals/normies raving or even just acknowledging the existence of these two groups but never actually knowing rv exists. and i'm pretty sure sm's lack of international, especially western, marketing is to blame. blackpink took the world by storm and that's thanks to their western-friendly concept. as for twice, they had a sort of "western debut" by releasing the english track "the feels". but for red velvet, their marketing is quite simply non-existent. i'm of the opinion that with how insanely talented they are individually but especially as a whole unit, they should be recognized globally and be even more popular than blackpink is, but unfortunately it's not the reality. sm's treatment of girl groups in comparison to boy groups (just think about the marketing for superm compared to got the beat) is unfair and red velvet should be at the top

    Red velvet was crowned as the Best Girl Group Alive by the Billboard but unfortunately SM's been lacking in promoting the girls worldwide despite their god tier discography. Honestly, RV is the only kpop group that i stan. They have this versatility and flexibility that whatever genre or concept u throw at them, they can pull it off more than expected. They don't compromise with just a girl crush nor cutesy concept. They're more than "idols". The artistry in their music and concepts are very intellectual and at the same time very enjoying and interesting. For me, they are the concept, they are the genre.

  • @josefjorelle
    @josefjorelle 2 года назад +14

    SM doesn't have the same global marketing reach, especially in the US compared to JYP and YG but in Korea they're god-tier. Plus, SM doesn't produce a "global mainstream" type of music for RV. Perhaps the English version of Bad Boy and RBB? But other than nothing comes on top my mind.
    If you're going to do B-sides, here are some of my recommendations: Look, Kingdom Come, LP, Ladies Night, Sunny Side Up, Taste, Future (Not really a B-side because it's an OST but it's fucking bop), and Close To Me by Ellie Goulding - Red Velvet Remix.
    Are you also going to dedicate an episode to RV's live performances? Because that would be dope.

    I can't believe it's already Day 4! Feels like there's still dozens of days left of content. These were all great choices (as if there are bad ones). Kind of with Esosa's point, it's kind of shocking when you go back to the M/Vs and some have such "low" views ex: Wildside has only 10M. They definitely have songs in the 9 digit views but compared to BP and Twice, it's not close. Not that it really matters to me but going back to Day One when Yeri was dubbed a "better promoter than their company", from my very small knowledge, SM is not the best in terms of promoting comebacks and their artists. Again, I could be wrong and feel free to correct but that's just what I've heard in some comments. Last point, when I'm trying to explain to someone why Red Velvet is my favorite, I will sometimes respond with "Even their screams are in tune." and reference RBB.

    Red velvet’s fandom Reveluvs is a bit weak internationally compared to Blinks and Onces, I think some of the reasons are lack of international promotions and how experimental their music is. Some of their songs take a while to warm up to, like Zimzalabim.
    Also promotions are centered around the title tracks and red velvet are b side queens, once you check out their full album, you can never go back. I listen to their other tracks more often than their titles.
    Red Velvet is definitely a top 3 girl group in the 3rd generation of kpop, they are highly respected in Korea and their music production and vocals is always highly complimented.
    I know some people who didn’t like RBB because of the whistle notes (can’t believe the lack of taste).
    It is disappointing that SM doesn’t promote them more in the West, they even have collab projects with artists like John Legend and Ellie Goulding.
    In conclusion, bully tf out of SM ent.

    The reason RV is not as huge outside Korea like the other two groups comes down to one reason: SM Entertainment, their company.
    Bad Boy was a huge success, even abroad, yet they never truly explored that. They are one of (if not) their best selling artist in the US, but they keep promoting others despite even getting western companies interested in promoting them abroad.
    To me, it looks like SM wanted RV to be their local favorite (and they are, Korea's general public adores them all) and once they achieved that, they didn't care about promoting them outside, which sucks because: LOOK. AT. THEM. 💗💛💙💚💜

Two of my three favorite RV songs in this batch (Psycho is the 3rd as you knew it was) and they were at the top in Korea during this time. They were invited to perform in North Korea on a peace mission. One thing I dislike about their videos is the excessive queer-baiting the company does with members (SM knows about the ships and keeps having members making eyes and almost kiss in the m/vs, etc.) Meanwhile Gaycatcher and others put nothing like that in their videos but earn nicknames like Gaycatcher from their real selves. It's a huge difference.

    So Red Velvet and Twice are TECHNICALLY both 3rd generation. RV Dropped right at the beginning of 3rd gen (2014) whereas Twice dropped in towards the end (2016? I believe?) So there's definitely a younger crowd and generational difference. Twice has that more bubbly, upbeat vibe whereas Red Velvet is a little bit more R&B, experimental. RV Tho only girl group to perform in NORTH KOREA. That's why they're ranked as nations ambassador group (by netizens) whereas Twice is like "nations girl group" kind of like SNSD was, because they're fandom grew up with them. Or that's at least part of how I understand it. Comparatively if you check out MelOn, and other charts, Red Velvet charts consistently higher or on par with BP, Twice. Red Velvet is a touch less internationally known, Twice and Blackpink are definitely more international, but also check the amount of awards RV won for Psycho WHEN THEY NEVER PROMOTED IT due to Wendy's injuries (Good job SBS..), check out their Spotify streams they've ranked over Twice and Blackpink for Spotify streams pretty consistently especially with Psycho/Queendom/Feel My Rhythm.

    About why RV isn't well known globally, I think SM never thought of promoting RV to the Western market since they felt RV is enough to dominate the Asian market at that point. SM always focus on Asian market incl. Japan and China that they feel that they don't even need to have a representative business partner in the West. Since BTS and BP era that proved how big the Western market can be, then SM form a partnership with Warner Music for AESPA. Red Velvet already a senior for (even) most of the 3rd generation group (passing the 8th years and into the 9th years already) so I think SM would rather promote the 4th generation to the Western market now in 2022. If only at SM already promoted RV in a global scale in the Bad Boy era, I think history would be written differently. And yet here we are now, even me as a late 50 years old guy still loving RV song (especially their Velvet side) and their solo (especially Wendy) in 2022 more than other younger group. I don't care much about the dancing etc. (how old you can be to rely on dancing anyway), it's about the music and the vocals and the latest RV Feel My Rhythm made me loved them more. They are truly unique.

    around 16:25 regarding top girl groups- YES! the top three girl groups have been Blackpink, Twice, and Red Velvet for some time now. I would say if you would have to add competition (at least between 3rd generation girl groups) you would have to add in mamamoo to make the top four. Outside of them all being from the Big 3 Companies- Blackpink gained popularity straight from their debut. Twice from their first comeback. And red velvet was popular at debut but was still labeled as SMs 'failed group' (but that happens with every new group they put out so I don't think it meant much) And then red velvet really gained traction with Dumb Dumb!
    I would say the only reason Red Velvet doesn't seem too popular to you is that reveluvs are a very vocal fanbase- its hard to find them on Twitter or other sites planning streaming songs, projects, comeback plans, etc like other fandoms. And along with their timidness there's less voting with them as well-meaning not a collection of awards like some other groups but they still win a lot. BUT regardless Red Velvet are extremely critically popular and had a collection of big awards.
