I found this excellent: the grip is a part I still work on after 50 years: we had zero coaching back in the late 60s. I have found for example you cannot have a controlled easy follow thru with a faulty grip_ in my mind the grip when correct allows the cue on line and thru the cueball, any tightening excessive looseness or grab during the shot will pull the cue off line. The grip is very closely alloyed to pressure on each shot and will vary with fluctuating mindsets. This can be helped by initially striking more into the center of the cueball which simply reduces pressure on the shot. As confidence then dictates- the beginner can then by small degrees begin adding side and spin with increasing confidence. You are the champ coach Steve< I watch all your stuff here in Australia.
Another brilliant video Steve. What I love about this video is that you mentioned in detail all the don'ts along with the situations in which they may occur. I just realised that I subconsciously have a tendency of leaving that gap between the cue stick and the palm of my hand and twisting the wrist whilst potting the black at an angle. Thanks for pointing it out. As always, Love from India.
When I have time off the twist at the end is my first cock up to correct. Normally find the issue at the end of the session like always. Great content, covers all the issues a grip can have.
WOW! Undoubtedly the greatest video coaching clip that I've ever seen, on basic errors with the grip. As usual, extremely professionally, yet simply explained & demonstrated by Steve. Please keep them coming. Thanks 👌 😊
Another excellent video! I start recording myself recently. What I discover about my grip especially with power shots is that i'm holding the cue so tight and squeezing at the same time as Steve described here. I should be more relaxed and focused on my pause and controlled and relaxed delivery. Thanks again Steve. You're amazing! 💯
Yep. I had a lot of bad habits when I first started. I wish we had these instructional videos when I first started playing. Much easier to learn the game if you're set on the right path from the beginning.
Great video again Steve. Only wish i knew this information about the grip 30+ yrs ago. Especially the squeeze on impact ( or not to squeeze on impact specifically) its quite a difficult habit to break especially when using power. Thats why its essential i believe that any young budding snooker players get quality coaching as soon as possible to address bad habits before they take hold 👍
This is compelling for me to use the analogy of when people are in the gym for example and lifting weights. Some are fixated to think of going for the heaviest and 'rushing' for repetitions in presume of gaining instant results. That's what I perceive with those overly gripping the cue. It's all about control and the range of movement.
Do you just hold the cue with middle finger and then just keep ring finger and little finger relaxed during backswing..? Is there trigger finger at all and what index finger does?
As always Steve ;) you put a video up of exactly the thing I am concentrating on it this very time. I spoke with my coach just on Monday and he pointed out that I have a problem similar to #2 on your list (holding too loose) but in my case it was opening the hand too much, letting the 3 fingers go off the cue. So I will be correcting that now. Thanks for all the videos and keep them coming! My request if I may would be on psychology - how to keep the level of play against weaker opponents. Something I noticed I am struggling with. I play much better when facing a stronger opponent.
I recently changed my grip to be much looser, I imagine as if I'm "throwing" the cue forward, my cue action improved maybe 20-30% but I wonder if this is the correct way of cueing.
I had an issue that my wrist was starting off twisted rather than twisting when I strike. I put it down to the grain of the wood of my cue in that I would grip the cue in a certain way (i.e. with the flat part of the butt pointing upwards) but when getting down on the shot the chevrons on the cue didnt quite line up and I was subconsciously turning my wrist to line them up rather than changing the grip on the cue. I think I have sorted it now though.
As you know Steve i was dangling the cue in my fingers which was definitely effecting my ability to screw the white. I went straight into my club after our session and this small adjustment plus my distance away from the shot is quickly turning me into a potting machine 😏😎
Yeah, a little bit too loose for you. Great to hear things have immediately felt better though and you're playing well. I think the spike in improvement is big at first following some good guidance 😃
Im the Guy with the gorilla grip. Thank You for explaining this with great detail. I would like to learn about the table cloth. I know all types of felt have a different consistency but how can someone easily understand the pace of a table? if you can do a video of explaining the cloth and pace that would be awesome. Thanks!
Barton i am only 14 yrs old I just started playing snooker I am practising a lot first I learned how to cue straight back swing stance and loose grip is it good btw my cue is John parris unique
Very interesting video it really helped, is it a must to open my grip and close it in the delivery in every single shot or only when I need a power shot?
I have a problem is that my arm is not straight and when I move the cue forward and backward it does not come straight with me and I try to compensate for that through the fist. Solve this problem please and sorry for the translation
Hi Steve, love your videos and my game has improved since I’ve been watching them. Could you please do a video on a soft stun/screw shot when I try to play it I seem to de acceleration on the shot.
Nice work Steve as usual I'm facing a problem in girp .. I address properly nice features open my fingers to relax the cue but when I hit through the shot automatically only two middle fingers work and then everything goes wrong ... Need some help
Funny, because I never really paid attention to my grip. I know I don't twist, nor do I place my thumb on top of the cue, but I don't think I relax my fingers at the back when I'm drawing the cue back.
I'm a squeezer sometimes, but only if I go low on the shots and want to generate a lot of backspin. I do it subconsciously, because of fear of miscueing on powerful draw shots. Oddly enough on top spin shots I almost never do this
When I am strike in the queue my queue isn’t going straight and I’m not getting backspin but sometimes I am and I’m doing my leg position right but it’s not working for me so what can I do
Hi Mr Barton.I am residing in Pakistan.I do watch your videos regularly hate to miss any video.and find it very helpful.I have a major problem I do everything right but when I actually diliever the cue automatically grip gets tighter please help me in this regard thanks in advance (Nazim Ali)
Dear sir please let me know that when you get down the shot what do you look at object ball or cue ball? Your answer would be helpful to improve my skills.
@@jason147h6 you can of course add a bit of pressure, but the very, very common amateur mistake is to add lots of extra grip pressure. I think when people talk about adding pressure, the y confuse adding a little bit, with what most club players do, which is to squeeze the hell out the Cue. They are two different things.
Thanks for the reply Steve. I find anything that needs some power has me choking the cue which in turn produces a decel. For me its a real hard habit to break. Can feel my grip coming on before hitting my chest😠

This is a good video. Ive tried a firmer grip Steve and its really helped. I think its been too loose before.
Just what I needed 🚀

100% correct.

Thanks for this helpful video about GRIP. STEVE is the best snooker-coach 💪👍

Yes, I think it's very hard to avoid the 'squeeze' problem on (near) maximum power shots... Especially so when there's pressure on the shot too!
Thank you Steve.. I’m following your guide’s religiously going forward.

Thanks Steve have been waiting such a video for a while
I have learned many tips to improve my skills from you sir.
Common problems with lots of players indeed, another great video!
This guy is fantastic. Should have more subscribers
Yeah I do several of these on occasion. Good advice.
Thanks for the video, cheers from Brazil.😀
Do you just hold the cue with middle finger and then just keep ring finger and little finger relaxed during backswing..? Is there trigger finger at all and what index finger does?
Thanks Steve, this was very well explained, cheers Terence
Yup as expected, definitely what I was needing 😍😍
Very glad I found you. I’m now a new subscriber. Great content.
Cheers Richard 👍

just going to the club thanks i will keep that in mind
hi Steve, i constantly squeeze the cue on the follow through.Any tips for not doing it? If i hold it too loose the cue comes out my hand :(
I have a problem is that my arm is not straight and when I move the cue forward and backward it does not come straight with me and I try to compensate for that through the fist. Solve this problem please and sorry for the translation

My cue twists slightly on my follow through but I don't feel like I'm twisting my wrist. What else could cause this?
I used to play with someone who would grip his cue with 2 fingers !! So light was his grip , he never got much power into his shots.
Great video, thank you. Ps. Keep up the great work.
Thanks!
Just top top class
How much do you charge for correcting the stance ,Grip and some basics ...

As always sir ❤️
Muy bien.
The loose grip paves greater flexibility in your shots.
Doesn't Ronnie recommend the squeeze?
Can someone recommend me a decent snooker cue?
What would we do with out Steve,he's a great man
Mr.Barton I need your consultation about a few things about gripping I’ve already sent you a video on your Instagram could you check it for me plz

I Love 💕 you sar am from Pakistan
I am still at the beginning of the video. I hopefully, I would say the same
It would be more beneficial if you would describe the proper grip.
I have done in lots of other videos 👍
