    The RP genre seems to be full of devs promising FiveM levels of depth when they’ve got the mental capacity of cake frosting.

    • @CrazyBloo
      @CrazyBloo 2 месяца назад +39

      With the existence of FiveM there is no point in making a standalone RP game, it would be much easier as an indie dev to just build off the foundation of GTA instead of trying to make a detailed world, vehicle physics, player controller etc.

      FiveM levels?
      They could be happy if they reach GMod levels honestly.
      It's insane that they want to release "early access games" that somehow have less content in it than some of the gmod servers 10 years ago that did most of the scripts themselves. 100€ for lifetime premium there somehow doesn't sound as bad anymore when these games cost 25.

      I think a lot of new small / solo indie devs think that the way it works is you can have a grandiose vision for a game with no real direction on how to realistically materialize it, and think you can slap together a barely functional skeleton that will get you tens of millions of dollars to then fund your game from the ground up, and no one will say otherwise.
      Not every studio is like the dev from Kenshi, who will fight and scrap for over a decade to make that dream a reality, and will either realize they are way over their head, or it truly was a scam and they just move onto their next cash grab.

    That Earth 2 teaser got me superexcited. I had almost forgotten about that "game".
    As a developer myself, I can't agree with you more about the issues with scoping. I want to add that many beginner developers begin at the wrong end. They blow all of their time, energy and money on fancy looks rather than building infrastructure and game mechanics first. You can always add pretty looks later, and if you get a publisher, they probably would want to change the looks anyway, or at least have some input. And there are many more people that can help making a good game look good, than help making a beautiful game good.

      Earth 2 still seems determined to keep going, they have uploaded quite a bit over the while, I'd love to see Bigfry, Kira and maybe a few others cover it again as I'm not 100% sure what to think of their latest bunch of videos. They seem to have a working in-game basis but it's still all fairly curated and does hardly show proper gameplay interaction other than running, flying, driving or boating around the map. Their skin/cosmetics showcases look awkward, like check out that weird Anubis thing. Going strong on that FOMO at any rate.

    This is exactly why I started going for the modding route back in 2017 instead of game development, I have made multiples short game projects over the years, and I never released them, bcs I knew it was for fun and by looking at all the works I had to do, I knew it was impossible to finish this projects, plus there is soooo much stuff to consider as soon as you go 3D, and if you go multiplayer it's even worst lol.
    Like you said in this video going for a 3D game, requires you to learn texturing (UVs, art style, etc...), 3D modeling (blender, maya, etc...), you need to learn how collisions works, LODs, etc...
    and even more important: "The project structure & Code optimization", the structure of a project is so important, as an example, a singleplayer game is completely different from a multiplayer game structure, you can't just throw "multiplayer" onto a singleplayer game like that, it requires a lot of refactoring, etc... and the way of building the project is really different...
    there is so much stuff to learn that this is an impossible task for one man !
    This is why I started learning reverse engineering (IDA, x64dbg, ...) and C++ back in 2017, started by modding singleplayer games, nowadays I have the skills to create more ambitious modding projects bcs I have learn so many stuff over the years, but even with that, creating a fully 3D multiplayer open world game is an impossible task for one man. A 2D multiplayer game yeah it could be a more realistic approch, but let's be real, no one will buy a 2D game in 2024, at least not from a random guy, and not sure it would be worth the time involved in the project.
    Ppls like the guy in the video should consider going for FiveM/GTA 5 modding first (or others open world games), it's full of resources, the community can help and it also make you learn some technical stuff and how a game works etc... or they should go for a simple 2D game project as you said.

    • @Lenariet
      @Lenariet 2 месяца назад +1

      Dunno about the "no one will buy a 2D game from a single guy in 2024". I mean Stardew Valley and the likes exist. I think it's less about 2D vs. 3D but more about identity, direction, style. Sure, there are these elite gaming "graphics matter the most" people. But they are perhaps not the majority.

    • @K3rhos
      @K3rhos 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Lenariet I mean yeah there is exceptions like always but personally 2D games are not my cup of tea, and that's the case for a lot of ppls.
      I played some 2D games in my life, but what makes me love video games was definitely 3D games and not something else ! So I could understand ppls not wanting to develop a 2D game, bcs there is already so much of them on the market !
      I grew up with the early 3D games like Goldeneye, Half-Life & GTA III, so it's really difficult for me to get appealed by a 2D game when I can just replay these early 3D legends !
      I'm pretty sure if 3D games never existed I would never have been a gamer tbh.

    Some of these indie devs really do have their head in the clouds. Starting off with a smaller title is the way to go. Big successful games usually have hundreds or thousands of devs. The biggest games like CoD have like 3000 people working on it with probably a 100,000 years of combined video game development experience. Successful studios build out their portfolio and experience over a long period of time. A lot of indie devs seem to overlook the fact that knowledge in a studio is "generational". As in people go in and out from working there but the knowledge they impart on the company as a whole is crucial. One or a few people that have been messing around with dev tools for a few years, its just never going to work for a big game in terms of scope.

    I highly recommend if you're going to make a role-play game that involves cops firefighters EMS you start out with a giant City that's going to be the main city of the map and just have that be an enclosed area thats starting out in development have all the core Mechanics for that area working and fine tune any thing that could be going wrong like glitches that you know could break the game and then after you've had that area built up add on another city that's maybe a little bit smaller with a decent way there like maybe an underground tunnel or going through a dense forest that you can go off the road and somewhat Explorer that way you could work on the whole entire map bit by bit and the community would be happier because if you're working on the whole map the entire time and not just one area you're going to have way more problems if you're a small developing team of like three people but you decide to instead go with what I threw out as an idea like working on certain big cities and allowing access down the road as they become better and more playable I feel like that these projects could actually do well but then again we also had that game called identity that was horrible but that game was literally just a cash grab but if you have developers who truly want to make a game I feel like if they do my idea of how to work on it it could go better but I'm not a game developer I have no knowledge on developing games whatsoever this is just what I think could work better

    Needs a lot of work gameplay and functionality-wise.
    Price tag shouldn't be $25.00 considering how empty it is.
    Potential solutions:
    Shouldn't have released it yet.
    Should've did more testing.
    Recommend using a free-to-play modal with optional purchasable content such as cosmetics.
    This would have increased it's popularity, player count, and likelihood people would buy cosmetics.

    I’ve said it a million times, early access KILLS games.. Very few EA games get full releases, even fewer have all the content they promise and of those that actually do release, virtually none maintain a player base. Your game needs to be far enough along to have a decent ‘hook’ for players to enjoy.
    Unless you’re extremely hard up for cash or are literally trying to scam people out of their money, I don’t see the benefit of releasing your game into EA. Develop your game, make sure it’s fun, release into beta or better.

    As soon as you charge money for something it is 100% open to criticism. It's just that simple.

      everything is open to criticism.
      it's just way more likely that most people will judge your product less harshly if it's entirely free for obvious reasons - as soon as you ask for money (especially if you overprice it) or mtx (especially if you overprice those as well) people are more critical automatically - the higher the price, the more functionality and polish it has to deliver.

    I would love to do a kickstarter and create a kickass zombie survival game, one that the community has been waiting for and truly deserves. But I know that I couldn't manage it properly.

    There is too much competition in this space. Even talented well-meaning devs would struggle to make such a game a commercial success. Especially since even Epic have made it so people can make their own games in the Fortnight UE. Even AI will be able to do a decent job of making games like this just from casual text.

    I think the wildest part about this is he was able to get the rights to Andrew Tate’s likeness, including his realistic running and jumping movements!
    (Not exactly sure about the running and jumping being Andrew Tate-like, but I think it’s awesome imagining it is).

    Man, the shadow cabal needs to reconvene on the Earth 2 saga lol. 10 days ago Arya suggested that:
    1. Facebook changed their name to Meta *because* of the success of E2.
    2. Allegedly E2 CEO Shane met with billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk.
    3. Meta's failed metaverse project has developers jumping ship to E2.
    None of his claims are backed by proof, of course, and he claims that they are speculations. But whatever that man is smoking must be some good shit.

      Lol yeah saw some comments where he said some of that. I also jumped through a video of him being on the GDC where he looked at a bunch of mEtAvErSe projects, one being E2, the other StarAtlas and I think the third "Wilder World" or something. In case of E2 and unless I missed something it seemingly was just a screen with some prerecorded in-game video running. Also looked like barely anyone else was there. But I know too little about the GDC to determine if that was normal for this event or an actual proof of lack of interest for this stuff.

    The first thing i was told, when trying to get into game dev, was that you are never going to get your game to be exactly as you thought it would be when you first dreamt it. it will never be EXACTLY as you invisioned it. You must be prepared to change your mindset on the game you're making or you're going to get stuck in this kind of shit. people are going to tell you your ideas are shit. people are not going to like the stuff you put in your game. you need to be ready to let go and cut content that you thought was good. and you need to be ready to quite possibly drop the things that you really wanted in the first place. you might even have to drop the project as a whole before it even gets ahead. That's where you need to be as a dev, you need to be realistic about what you CAN do.
