Ok, This vac is great as part of my tools collection for my projects. What was not great was this video. He was such a whiner. Really he wants a lip so he can pour out the contents.....into the trash. And it does not take exactly 3 gallons of liquid.....really. Whine, whine, whine. The guys in the squadron, had a good laugh on this guy.
I love this vacuum and these are all valid points. I'd like to add two, I wish it were brushless because vacuums are notorious battery hogs, and I wish the battery sat down lower so that you could use the large batteries without them sticking over the top of the unit.
Wouldn’t it be great if Ryobi had a battery shaped adapter where you can plug an extension cord into. It would essentially make all of Ryobi tools a hybrid one.
There is something like that, not Ryobi of course. I'd seen a review of that item, and it was a miserable fail. Granted the kid using the brushed circular saw with a worn and dirty stock blade did not have tremendous saw experience, but it sure appeared to me that it wasn't anything that would work well for the higher power demand tools. Probably best for dimmer lamps, sander, and maybe a multi-tool? But at that point, grabbing a corded version of the same tool is still probably much better. The father and son in the video both had accents if I recall, and it was of course a double corded transformer, with a One+ style socket adapter with a barrel connector. It's on RUclips, but hell if I recall properly what the title was.
I selected this during Ryobi days with an $89 set of 3AH batts. It is essentially a toy....but.... very light and perfect to take to small to medium remote projects-like changing rusted bolts on a toilet tank. Sucked up all residual water in tank and all minor leakage on floor-in seconds. Awesome forplumbing work water removal. For serious portable work with A/C power- get the $99 RIGID box vac. HEPA filter keeps spackle dust from re-entering air. Amazing tool. This is a contractor grade pro vac . Nice video. Very concise. It is what it is...a useful toy.
You have valid points. The tools fall off from the storage. Also my tools won't stay connected when I'm vacuuming they're constantly falling off. The emptying of the container is aggravating because dirt gets stuck in it. And you're correct about the hose it sections itself back and slides around everywhere. Otherwise I love the vac I Keep it in the house and use it to clean up little messes with. I have just recently experienced a problem with it the section is not as strong as it used to be and the air does not blow out of the exhaust. If I remove the filter I have no change to the issue. If I pull the top out of the canister and let it run it does blow exhaust out of the side. I've contacted Ryobi and I am waiting for their response.
Wow! It's funny I found this video today!! I needed more accessories for this to work for me. I received my extra tools accessories yesterday from Amazon. I also bought a 4" rectangular heavy duty brush & 2 straight extension wands and used some heavy duty black #64 rubber bands to hold on the carry handle that now stays up all the time. I got the rubber band idea from the new 6 gallon shop vac, the way it holds the 2 wands on it by those nylon coated bands. For the 2 wands & crevice tool with brush was like $12 more. For the supplied crevice tool accessories, I used rubber bands to wrap around the "Crevice Tools Clips" so they don't fall off as yours did & mine as well & eventually get lost or broken. They are just not that sturdy enough to hold them in place. I am now happy with it, but I had to buy those items separately, but for me it's worth it to have right under my work table. Thanks for the video.
I like this vac, but it is one of the tools that I have complaints about, 1st the tools right from the start is the tools fall out all the time and the clips go with it, I have glued the clips on 3 or 4 times. 2nd the hose, once streched out, will not collapse enough to fit back in the corners and if you can get it in the corners, it is a few inches to long for the end to clip in. The lip is an issue, I have to dump the contents, then when in mid air pull back to try not to get it caught in the lip area. I added small roller bearing wheels to the bottom which I like. I still use it everyday, have a big rubberband around it to hold the hose on and side attachment, but I like it's size and suction power.
at 1st I hated this vacuum! but I bought a 3 piece adapter kit from Home depot & bought an extra hose & cut the end off the hose that fits the vacuum & the small adapter fits in very well & you can any size hose & I give it the Portable Project Wet/Dry Vacuum Ryobi P3240 3👍👍👍 up!!
I have the 6 gallon vacuum and it is great except a bit clumsy when cleaning the stairs in my old house. It is a bit heavy so I will be buying the 3 gallon for that purpose. The problems discussed in the video are minor, in my opinion, and can easily be worked around.
Just bought this and none of five dislikes will bother me. Only thing I dislike is that I found out I can't find replacement filter - all sold out. Did they stop making replacement filter?
If you were to modify the bottom portion of the vac to remove the lip on one corner so pouring out debris would not get trapped under the lip, would you lose suction power. What I’m getting at is, does the lip aid in creating a seal for the vacuum to function properly and modification is highly NOT advised.
This is too small, but it's too big, and the hose doesn't go far enough, even though you can carry with the handle wherever you go, but we don't want it to be too portable and should attach to a wall. Also we don't have the patience to let the attachments break in. Have I got that summed up?
Well, Damn. This portable vacuum has to be picked up and carried around! A battery-powered tool that you can't plug into an outlet! Ryobi does offer a larger dust bucket--it comes with their 6-gallon cordless vacuum. My sedan doesn't have a cargo bed; I'm so disappointed.
I would like if it would take bags. I just got it and I immediately noticed the lip around the base and knew that was a problem. But that wouldn't be if it had a bag.
He's right about the clip holder for the utility nozzle. It's weakly constructed. My first P3240 came with that clip holder fallen off right out of the box. I returned it and ordered a second P3240. The clip holder on my second P3240 was intact, but one of the two tiny plastic pieces that keeps the clip holder in place was already broken off.
(I see there is a “David Ho” who commented... hi Dave. I used to work with a David Ho.) In Home Depot‘s reviews for this vacuum, many people also mentioned the lip in the container as being a nuisance. My solution is to just shake it more. I agree however that the size of the trashcan can make the task of emptying it easier or harder. Milwaukee has a similar two gallon vacuum/blower, and it also has a lip. My guess is, that the lip adds to making the walls sturdier. Also, having a continuous lip makes for a tight seal. But strangely, on the Home Depot reviews for the Milwaukee vacuum I could not find anyone disliking the lip. The hose is kind of short I agree but if you make it much longer then you have the problem of storing it. I use two 1-ft extensions from Milwaukee 0882-20 vacuum. Regarding how much water it holds, I used a measuring bowl and was able to fill The vacuum’s container with 3-1/4 gallons. It may be, however, that the reviewer was only able to suck up just less than 3 gallons due to the shut off feature, presuming that’s the way they did it. To the commenters saying that the reviewer was whining, the text at the very beginning said that his review would look like he was nitpicking. Milwaukee’s similar vacuum, 0880-20, could also use some extensions, due to it also having kind of a short hose. It took a while to figure out how to make it a blower, an interesting solution, but I like Milwaukee’s solution Better, where, like the Ryobi, you disconnect the hose, You then take that same end and push it into an already existing round exhaust port. I may not use the blower function much anyway, because I already have a small Milwaukee dedicated blower tool.
Said it doesn't hold exactly 3gals but didn't tell us how much it holds what is it 2.9 gals? You can't extend the holes?, well that's why it was made lite enough to carry it's a compact vac or better yet put some stuff around it to keep it in place while you extend the hose 6ft it's not hard to adjust things to make it work for you....
I am a Ryobi, Ridigid and Milkwaukee M12 user for a long long time. This is one of the worst review I ever have, when I am shopping around a vacuum for my daughter, he just talk and not experiment on how long it takes for 2ah 4ah or even 6ah. Second, is the the hose length and can accessories available to make it better. Third is weight of the product, does it work for what situation and what kind of user is suitable. If you are on 18V Ryobi platform, it is worth to invest an vacuum that you do not want to hold the whole system in hand, I bought one for my daughter plus my 9ah battery, it is good to run for 20-25 minutes according to my ridigid 9ah plus ridgid vaccum.
If that's the worst, then it seems not too bad. Every vac has their procs and cons. It seems like for the size, it's pretty handy and functional to have around. It is up there for consideration for me. But the answer I was waiting for is... based on these 5 unfavorable things, is this shop vac then a... Do Not Buy... or still a Worth It?
By having a larger lower bucket you will decrease suction power. Likewise having a smaller lower bucket would increase suction power. It’s a trade off.
Just bought one. Used it three times - worked great. Then went to use it again and it wouldn't start. Figured out that if you turn it upside down it would start. Upon taking it apart I discovered that the morons building these units are using a normally open microswitch on the float that is supposed to shut off power when the tank is full. I guess it only worked the first few times due to the switch being jammed down during assembly. So it does the reverse of what it should, turns on the motor only when the tank is full!
IMO, absolutely not on the an A/C plug. That would run up the cost and no longer meet the price point market they are trying to compete in. When I look at this vac, I am ONLY looking for a battery Vac.
Good power Very close to a small corded vac. Eats batteries fast, but, that explains the power. Overall a very good little vac, best cordless option, the little handheld ones are useless.
I used to have the Dewalt 20 volts vac and to empty was the same issue with the lip,,, but not big deal,,, now the corded issue ?? yeah sadly is battery only
I agree with all the complaints except the 3 gallon issue. Surprising the Japanese designers did not spend enough time to test out all the features. We also have their other hand held vac and have had to buy several over the years. Hose is the worst. Ours has cracked already.
Do you guys do battery reviews as well? I have a 40v that the (side mounted) meter says it’s fully charged, but does not run any of my devices. Other batteries do work.
olumsezbey, it could be the contacts of the battery itself. The charger may be able to make a solid connection to the battery contact whereas the tool you are using it on is not.
actually the battery probably has a bad cell in it...... should be able to call ryobi and get a new one. i believe they have something like a 5 year warranty on those. 877-655-5250
I will say the same. Well cord is not that important to me. +1 more thing It could have wheels as well to be used as home vac as well for the wife to use. Shirt stretchy hose causes me to hit my car often :( I use it for car only. I would love to have it half the size as well :)
Could probably get a small piece of PVC and heat it up to "form" and adapter for whatever you have as an extension hose. Honestly I have no experience with this vacuum, I came here to check it out.
""The third thing we dislike about this vacuum."" Do you have a turd in your pocket? Who is we? The worst thing I dislike about my Ryobi vacuum is your review... It is not perfect but I like it.
I've got adaptors for it and it makes life easier useless don't blade the tool just think outside the box go to a fab shop and design a better bottom of the vacuum
I have a 9ah and it was full, I vacuumed my wife Toyota Corolla and when I was done I had 2 bars left. I'm gonna do a full review and run time on it soon. Check out my RUclips channel DIY RAYMOND 🙂👍
Empty it inside the house? No need. It has this "advanced feature" that allows you to carry it outside, to almost anywhere, and empty it out there. You glossed over this, or maybe you just didn't get briefed on it. You need to fire your research team. It's clearly covered on page 137 of the Advanced User Guide, only available internally to Ryobi development team members.
First option. Keeps the tools cheaper, and not every tool needs constant power like a shop tool, but then we can each decide for ourselves. And the cord should be able to optionally route either down or to a side because different tools have different needs. Light wants side, drill wants bottom. And it needs some clip-on weights to not throw balance all out of whack. (And in the tradition of ryobi feature requests, it should have bluetooth speakers, an area light, and a coffee maker too)
Ryobi website can not give you a straight answer this can suck unto 45cfm and the 6 gallon model unto 85cfm and they can't give you a average runtime on batteries with these cordless vacuums makes you not wanna waste your money and there reconditioned products are crap. And Milwaukee has better warranty and they have free Fedex there and back to you if you need Repair work Awesome.
All points he makes in this video are very petty!! Come on, you have to move a portable unit to "reach"? Isn't that what it is designed to do, move to the "dirt?

I got one last night as my free tool, power source inverter

I use the ridgid 9 gallon cordless one with dual batteries and it’s lifetime warranty no issues and has more power too
are there any dust bags you can use with this ?
What portable vacuum would you recommend???
Just bought this and none of five dislikes will bother me. Only thing I dislike is that I found out I can't find replacement filter - all sold out. Did they stop making replacement filter?
They are washable if that helps.

Had to really dig deep to find 5 complaints. The last complaint about the sealing lip issue with emptying contents is beyond weak.

3:54 What's your definition of "run time on this is not great" ??
10 minutes, 30 minutes, 2 hours? Which battery? A 1.5ah battery?
I agree with everything on your list, i have no idea where any of attacments are cause they fell off
The Ryobi P3200 wet/dry vac has a little plug that you could pull out and pour the water out. They should have done that with this one.
(I see there is a “David Ho” who commented... hi Dave. I used to work with a David Ho.)

best value out there! Nice idea, optional larger lower buckets!

I like my Ryobi 3 gallon vac. Had it for over 2 years and no complaints.
Maybe your video is the worst thing about the vac.
Try to measure the actual physical capacity of the bucket without the vac attached. It is 3 gallon. This is the standard of measurement.
I used to have the Dewalt 20 volts vac and to empty was the same issue with the lip,,, but not big deal,,, now the corded issue ?? yeah sadly is battery only

No wetvac actually takes on liquid for the amount it says. It’s always half. I learned that as I was picking up water from a washer machine.
I will say the same. Well cord is not that important to me.
+1 more thing
It could have wheels as well to be used as home vac as well for the wife to use.
Shirt stretchy hose causes me to hit my car often :(
I use it for car only.
I would love to have it half the size as well :)
Haters go into hate. I love mine
You don't like a battery powered device is battery powered? I suppose you complain AC powered devices can't run on a battery pack without the cord.
is there a hose extension available?
Could probably get a small piece of PVC and heat it up to "form" and adapter for whatever you have as an extension hose.
Honestly I have no experience with this vacuum, I came here to check it out.
You can buy a vacuum accessory kit that is just generic for any vacuum that will work...that's what I did. I think I paid like $15 for it.
I just taped a shop vac hose on it
""The third thing we dislike about this vacuum.""
Do you have a turd in your pocket?

I've got adaptors for it and it makes life easier useless don't blade the tool just think outside the box go to a fab shop and design a better bottom of the vacuum
so how long DOES the 4ah battery run it for??!
Exactly what I'd like to know, and came to the comments to ask.
I have a 9ah and it was full, I vacuumed my wife Toyota Corolla and when I was done I had 2 bars left. I'm gonna do a full review and run time on it soon. Check out my RUclips channel DIY RAYMOND 🙂👍

My wife said stop belly aching.
Ryobi needs to make a adapter from battery to plug or make all tools both plug and battery.
Totally agree!
First option. Keeps the tools cheaper, and not every tool needs constant power like a shop tool, but then we can each decide for ourselves.

yes that would be nice...

Ever heard of s garbage bag or a shoping bag wrap it around dump it out pouring stuff out not that hard
best
Waaaaaaaaaa
Man, please.
Some WHINE with this CHEESY review?
What a whiner, don't like it don't buy it
the worst review yet
The problem is you want it to be a corded shop vac....... it's a portable shop vac you can hold it while using it
It says 3 gallon with dry?
This guy seems like he has never worked a day in his life
