I'm a retired Upholstery shop owner I did it for 50 plus years. The one thing I always did, was to use a handheld wire brush to remove the glue and old foam rubber padding. Never used a grinder wheel wire brush. It takes a little longer to do it that way but you won't be making un-wanted mistakes.
I just used hand manual one take sum time but better than messing up using grinder
Thanks for the tip! Yeah I should have done that it would’ve turned out better
Did you remove the liner by bending and keep the seats in the truck?
@jimbosammy4255 i never removed any seats when taking a head liner out but the come out through the passenger side.
Very nice! I think you’ve encouraged me to try my hand at fixing my own headliner.
I used your video and my truck came out beautifully!... thank you so much for the excellent instructions and great video.
Just wondering how is it now?
Awesome video! Straight to the point with all the information you need without a buncha blah blah blah, and a plus is you got a southern accent like me! EXCEPT it is impossible to unplug the harness glued to the headliner !
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video!
@@OFFROADNATION606 be honest how long will it take an average guy with ALOT of tools and equipment
@@wildestcowboy2668It’s been a while since I’ve done it. I don’t think it took to long maybe a couple hours I think I let it dry overnight
Should have recorded it all cause that looks really good
Thanks! Yeah I wish I did the video alittle better
Sheesh! I had no idea there were 501 steps during this process. I literally came on here just to see what a headliner was! LOL
I'm a girl...that's my excuse anyway...but I didn't know what the heck my husband was talking about when he told me about him getting a new headliner. But after watching all of these steps, I thank God that we had hail damage and the body shop took care of all of this. Love your accent by the way!
It was definitely a lot of work lol thanks for watching!
Great job with the headliner. You gave me a confidence boost to tackle the one on my silverado
How easy would you say it went?
i have a 4 door silverado 2003 and want to change my headliner.
@@kozmicflush980 did you ever do it
@@coolred6 hey, i did this project finally just a few days ago.
it was hell of a process but easy though, just time consuming especially if you do it alone like i did.
i Had to take out front seats and several trim panels. i followed this video and another video for how to apply the fabric/glue. once i unplugged everything and got the liner free, i got my father to help me actually get the headliner out through the front passenger door, definitely need two people for such a large headliner. I believe if you have single cab or ext cab this job will be SUPER easy but doing it for Crew Cab is very time consuming. took me about 5 hours saved myself $ 400+ though
Good luck.

Excellent video Brother! Thank You for sharing this Excellent CONTENT.
Great tutorial! This will be a big help when I do mine!
FERD FROMODESSA Thanks! Glad to help
almost everyone on youtube needs to watch your how tos and take some notes. thanks for the actual help/ explinations and not turning the camera on yurself and chit chatting about bs haha. perfect videos. subscribed
Thanks I really appreciate that! I know what you mean. I try to just get to the point and be done with it lol
Thank you for sharing your DIY project: I saved it to my playlist. Very nice job on the video and pop-up text for the correct tool. I am trying to resolve the cause of water leaking into my 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck. I tested the sunroof drain tubes with only a cup of water yesterday. I initially tested the drain tubes while the truck was backed into the driveway; the water drained through the front drain tubes only; I did not notice water leaking from any other location. I started the engine, pulled out of the driveway and faced the truck forward; tested the drain tubes; the backseat passenger side did not disperse water; the backseat driver side dispersed water through the drain tubes, the front passenger side dispersed the water down the drain tube and also down the pillar through the dash; the front driver side dispersed water down the drain tube. Test Results 1 - the passenger side of the truck seems to be the problem.
Peter Pa No problem thanks for watching! I’m trying to find a water leak in my truck also! Mine seems to be the driver side
@@OFFROADNATION606 Did you remove the third brake light from the outside in order to replace the headliner? In my first attempt I tried to use a sealant on the third brake light - I missed the mark big time because water still leaks into the truck from the third brake light; thus, I purchased a gasket from a seller on eBay and I also purchased a new third brake from a local auto parts store.
check rear cab vents... they stick open and let water in
Check shark fin...known for leaks
Excellent video you explained every step with every tool that you will need! Thank you.
Great explanation this exactly what I was looking for. Doing mine today!!
U did a good job being the first one, their is no way we don't live close to each other with that accent, I live in Central NC
Thanks! I’m from eastern Kentucky
Thanks for sharing...You did a good job. I do have a question since my headliner has some edges where the fabric is starting to peel back. Would you recommend just using the adhesive on edges where the fabric is beginning to come lose instead of removing the entire headliner? If so, would it be best to spray the adhesive on the headliner instead of the thin fabric itself to reattach. Thanks
Thanks for watching! You could probably try 3m headliner adhesive on the edges It should work ok
I think a wire brush on a battery drill is best for this application, then a regular wire brush or plastic brush to finish off
Use a wire brush for a bbq grill to clean the board works great
Thanks i will have to remember that
It's just the edges on both sides loose for me, I wonder if cleaning the fiberboard and using the spray adhesive will work just to patch it up.
Very good job.. I’ve got to do my mid 90s Chevy… very informative
I've bought everything to do mine. Now a dumbass at work put me on work comp. Now on a to do list, which is put on hold. Thanks hoping my 2 boys will help. Just at a point where it's hard to supervise and not take over. I've done some upholstery by trial. Turned out great, but not walking someone through it. May just wait till I'm healed up.
I understand that. It’s really not a bad job to do. Hope you get better! Thanks for watching!
Looks cool! I need to replace mine. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Nice..pretty easy.. I'm going to do mine in a few weeks. Thank you much for the video buddy👍
Where did you get the material? Also, how did you match the color up? Looks good.
I think I ordered it from Amazon or eBay. The place I got it from just said it was the same factory color. I wish I still had the link to it.
Thanks for this video bud now I’m thinking I can do it myself ….
Very good video. I want to do this on my '06 Silverado but am worried on getting the wrong material or color. Mine is the exact same color as yours. Where did you get it and what color was chosen? Any chance on a link?
Didn’t show the hardest part. How did you get the whole unit out in the first place? I can’t get mine to come out any of the doors without feeling like I’m going to break it
Good video. Now I know why the shops want $200 to do it, lol...
Agreed with the grinder. I used my drill with the wire attachment then finished up with a DA and sticky paper. Yes I learned about digging in and did the same as you with the fiberglass resin. I'm thinking I wanted to try using the expanding foam next time instead of resin. too damn messy.
Use a Crimped Wire Cup Brush instead of the Twisted Wire Cup, it is much more gentle
Well I just took the headliner out of my 2000 Silverado single cab. The big surprise, the backing was NOT fiberglass, but formed foam and it is broke now in 3 pieces.
Great video thank you much for posting I have the same truck and I’m going to try to fix my headliner
Where did you buy the new headliner fabric and what did it cost? Also how is it holding up? Thanks!
I think it was either eBay or Amazon I can’t remember exactly. So far it’s still holding up great! Thanks for watching!
How tf you get it in?
Great video!! Very helpful. I wanted to ask where you got your center console over the jump seat in the middle. It looks pretty nice 👍
allen clark Thanks! glad it helped and I got it from eBay.
Awesome! About to do mine! Thanks bro!
Thank You! It came out beautifully!
Thanks for watching!
Straight die air drill and 3 inch wire wheel works great . Dont spin to fast
ernest morales Thanks I’ll have to try it next time
Great job!... it looks amazing.
Can you go over the orientation of those clips again in detail at the 4:12 mark in another short video? I’ve taken down those brackets they go to and the fell out but I don’t know the correct way they go back. Thanks in advance.😎🤝
bossgoon115 At 4:20 it shows how they snap together I’m thinking they only go on one way but I’m not exactly sure. Hope that helps
Yea it did thanks.😎✌🏽
Looks great!!! I did recall hearing where you got your headliner material? Can you tell us? Thank you in advance.
I think it was either eBay or Amazon I can’t remember exactly. Thanks for watching!
Good video! Thank you. I'm getting ready to take replace the headliner cloth in my 2002 GMC Sierra, 2500HD ("Mi Cabio Blanco"); like your pointers, this will help me a lot...I just wished you had someone video you (& a friend?) putting the thing back in...that will be the tricky part!
“Alright guys” x10000 hetliner
What type of fiberglass patch did you use to repair the spots in the molded fiberglass headliner?
great job is it still holding up
Thanks! Yeah still holding up great so far
It was way easier to slowly work the wiring loose from the headliner than it was fishing the wires through the dash.
I'm gonna take on this project soon. really glad i read your comment as i was thinking the same thing about that wire. Probably just pop them loose rather than feeding it out. Are they easy to pop loose?
my truck is a silverado 03 1500HD crew cab
Did you have to remove your seats to get the headliner out???
Job well done.
Great video my man thanks for sharing
Good job 😮
Nice job
Loved this video!
Pedro Herrera Thanks for watching!
Where did you buy the headliner at? I can't find any online that match the color of the stock one, and this one is the perfect color!
I think it was either eBay or Amazon I can’t remember exactly.
I wish I still had the link to it
Great video. Has the 3M headliner adhesive held up so far?
Thanks! Still holding up great so far
looks good bud. Thanks for the video help
Love the accent homie
how did you get the headliner out of the car brother? I almost broke it trying to pull out of my 04 avalanche..
Great video
Thanks for the video, do you know the part number for the bulb in your dome light
How many yards of material did you use?
I honestly can’t remember it’s been so long since I’ve done it. I think it was either eBay or Amazon where i got it from. I know I had alittle bit left over seems like
3 years later how is this 3m headliner glue working?
so far still holding up great
How do you get your dome light back in
As a matter of fact, yes the overhead grab bar does come off the headliner.... one of my passengers pulled himself up into the back passenger side seat of my extended cab '01 Silverado and ripped the back clip of the handle right out of the ceiling, broke that little loop at the end of the clip and it won't stay in now. Looking for a replacement handle at this very moment. Can't replace the clips, the broken part is actually molded into the handle... When was it ever a good idea to use a plastic two part clip with a retaining ring instead of a nice metal screw....?
Yeah I really don’t like the design. I agree with you I don’t know why they can’t just use a screw it would be a lot better setup.
Who plays this song i have been looking all over the internet but i cant find out who it is ?
Joakim karud luvly on SoundCloud
thank you
Where can I get myself a 64 by 64 piece of cloth to replace the headliner with? Wally here only has 72 x 44s....
I think it was either eBay or Amazon where I got it from I can’t remember exactly
Did it feel kinda flimsy to you? Or hard? Mine was able to bend coming out.
What material did you used that matches so well?
Great work
Thanks
Where did you order the headliner material from
I noticed your center council is updated was that very hard to do?
By which door do you take the headliner outside off ?
How wide was the fabric you used length and with wise? Thanks
I cant remember exactly but I think it was about 60 inches wide but I can’t remember the length. When I bought the fabric it was a little bigger than the headliner to allow me to fold it under.
How did you get it out of the pickup you skipped that
Whiteout_lb7 I opened the front and back door and gently bent the headliner down enough to slide it out. Just be careful not to bend it to much
How has it held up the past 2 years?
So far still holding up great
I'm in the middle of mine and my "cardboard" is so flimsy where I got after the remaining foam that I blended it with a d.a. sander and going to glue over that. It's paper thin lol. I'll report back in a year to update if it's sagging or not
They definitely could’ve made them alittle better lol.
Could’ve shown the reinstall. Those clips on the corners in the front kept bending
How many cans of adhesive did you use
How did you remove it from inside the truck to outside?
I had to open the front door and extended cab door and bend it alittle just be careful not to bend it to much
How much did it cost you with material in glue
I can’t remember exactly but I think around $100
Thanks! This was very helpful.
Scott Holmes Thanks for watching glad it helped!
Where did you buy your new headliner?
Could you use an orbital sander with some fine grit discs on it?
HouseLightweight Not really for sure. I’d say that would work.
It will tear it up
How did you get the headliner out of the truck?
I had to open both doors and bend it alittle just make sure to not bend it to much
the grab handlers just snap into the headliner and not into the metal roof? I am having a problem getting the grab handles in tight as I put them back up.
If I remember right I think they snap in the roof
Great video man, I wanna redue my headliner as well but I want to try and remove the rear roof ac climate control and just utilize the ones in the front roof part of my 2000 Limited, any tips or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks for watching! I’m not really sure on that I’ve not really did anything with rear climate control.
Hows the glue holding up?
ddemier ddemier Honestly really good, so far no sagging anywhere looks just like it did when I put it in, May try to do a review video soon.
@@OFFROADNATION606 I used 3M super 77 and now its sagging on a curvy spot only 3 days after I re- installed it
@@OFFROADNATION606 where did you bought the 3m adhesive for headliner?
Freddy Lopez I actually got it at Walmart
Gotta get a face mask for that adhesive removal. I really doubt you wanna be breathing that in. Good job on the eye wear tho!
RandaL th3VandaL Yes I definitely recommend having one for sure.
Is this an extended cab or crew cab? Will the headliner come out in the crew cab with the pillar in the way?
It’s an extended cab I had to bend mine a little to get it out. I think on the crew cabs there bringing them out the passenger side front from the videos I’ve seen. I’d just make sure to not bend it too much.
Where did you get your center console?
I didn’t know a duramax had a headliner
What armrest/center seat do you have in the front? It doesn't look like the stock one. I hate the stock one in my truck. Yours looks like it is from a newer truck. Does it bolt right in?
It’s from the GM 2012-2017 model jump seat. Requires frame modification, gotta cut and weld the frame to fit.
Where can I find the fabric
How long did it take from start to finish?
Dbgrasshopper33 I let the adhesive sit for a day so all together about 3 days
Matthew Galano I’ll have to try that next time
@Matthew Galano Which adhesive did you use? I'm getting ready to do mine as well and I want to make sure I only have to do it once. I've heard good and bad about some of the 3m stuff so I'm curious to hear from someone who has done it before- Thanks
How’s ya do the console swap
4:11 does anyone know where to get these retainer clips?
Definitely nothing like my 2001
I looking into doing a similar project. Where did you get the headliner material and how did you figure out the correct color. Last question how’s it holding up
Thanks
Philip Azcueta I got it from Amazon and I made sure It was for the 99-06 that way it would be the same gray. It’s holding up great so far
How did you do the console/jump seat?
Snake bite Stever I’m wandering the same, I wander what year it came off of. I like the cup holders up high instead of on the floor
GeorgiaBoy912 2014 or newer I currently have a 15 since my 02 was stolen a month ago and they still haven’t found it
Snake bite Stever Right now it’s just sitting there but you can cut the legs off the old console and weld them to the new console
GeorgiaBoy912 I think it was a 2014 or 15 Silverado. I bought it off eBay it was removed from a police Silverado
Not bad but you should have shown how you did every piece you took off or out instead of telling us how you did it. Even your mistakes so that we wouldn't have to make the same mistakes.
But thanks a lot any. way.
Did you unplug the battery at all?
No I didn’t
How do you get it out?!?
