WOW! This is so refreshing to see and hear! I attended UMass in the early 80's and studied jazz and gospel with Dr. Boyer. He was an outstanding teacher and had a great influence on me. I played bass in his vocal jazz ensemble for 4 years and he was truly one of a kind. He always greeted me with his big toothy smile and I firm handshake every time we met. He is sorely missed.

I was a student of Dr. Boyer's at UMASS/Amherst, in his famed "Vocal Jazz & African-American Music" program. While we were known to most on campus as "the vocal jazz ensemble," Dr. Boyer was sure to reinforce for us the truth of Gospel Music an its significance in the American musical continuum. What is remarkable to me is how truly timeless he is... after all these years, having left this earth yet his voice and his message still resonates for us all...

Who would have ever thought that both of us became teachers after our early years as gospel singers? And, what is more interesting, both of us have doctorates in our fields. I was an original member of the Bradford Specials and "Too Close To Heaven" recording. The Boyer Brothers will always remain in the memories of my youth.

Totally captivated listening to Dr. Boyer. I stumbled across him on a IG clip and went hunting because I had to hear more! So here I am! What a brilliant and charismatic educator!!

It's great to see all these former UMass students here. I attended UMass as a music major beginning in 1975 and I remember Dr. Boyer well. I never admitted to anyone that his singing brought me to tears, so I would hide my eyes. He had so much influence on me.

I knew Dr. Boyer, he was a really great guy. It's so nice to hear him speak again, and about the music that was his greatest passion. I wish I could remember the name of the Quartet he sang with near the end of his life, I would like to try and find them on RUclips. Thank you for sharing this video, so that we can still hear and see him.

Yes Funkyfly, he had many, many stories and sometimes our classes on gospel music were just that, all stories. He had the power to draw people in toward him like a magnet and he completely captured the listener with everything he said both in the classroom and casually.

...even more surprising to me...his impact on my life has influenced my sense of art, of history, and of Gospel music, as I have now been in ministry for over 20 years...
