OMG The man is simply showing that you can build An airplane for RC for very little money. He is giving a lot of potential RC pilots hope that you can get into the RC hobby for very little money. And I for one am glad he did. Thank You.
Carbon fiber tube runs $4.50 to $5.50 for a 36" tube. On the aileron control rods. You can polish the wire before bending, then coat them with Vaseline put them in place and build a dam out of clay at either end then fill the groove and wire rod with epoxy. After the epoxy sets the control rod will break free and the resulting epoxy bearing is slop free. Do this all the time for Q500's.
Great looking plane! I'm fairly new to RC planes and building, however I'm very excited about making future planes. Already acquiring the tools and equipment. This plane looks awesome! Thanks for sharing!
This is a guy who has an idea...and goes with it! my favorite part is when his wife is cooking or something, and he's talking about the plane. Great video!
built this. what i did for wing mounting is ran two wooden dowels through the fuse and used rubber bands to mount the wing. I actually made two wings for this, one with and one without dyhedral. that you so much for this tutorial.
This is great,, I use to use this on balsa planes as well many years ago,, it works great as a built up wing covering too. Dries tight just like silk-span. you can also tint it with water-base paint mixed in the glue and water
I'm an old Rc builder from balsa days, had a piper cub kit and built it and monitored it , futaba radio. In the Air Force, early 70's so low budget but build it and had great times. I want to try what your doing.
great job on that wing. Getting a one piece wing sanded like that isn't as easy as you made it look! I cut a "negative" guide out of a piece of 1/8" plywood and dragged that across a wing to make sure the shape was uniform. Good flyer!
Thank you sir, it is perhaps the most to the point and no nonsense video of a project that I have viewed to this day. My compliments. I'm an AE and love RC planes. keep well and keep posting.
+david mimms yep, but theres no way he would have got 2 million views calling it "how to build a plane for under $60" I can build a dollar tree foam plane this size for $3 no electronics.
Great job. I was looking for ideas about the motor mounts on foam....really great video. I have been using painters paper over glue. I’m going to use the method you discussed. This vid has many good ideas that I’m going to incorporate. Thanks again.
That's a really nice build from scratch!!! Looks as good as some of the kits you can buy for way more than $10. I imagine that price didn't include the motor, but still... great!!! Theres a product you might try that is basically exactly what you made with the elmers type white glue. It's called Mod Podge or Hodge Podge. A waterbase sealer, glue & finish all in one. You can make thin coats or very thick almost clear plastic like coats that you can sand to your own preference. Comes in different types like flat, glossy or super glossy. I use this stuff on all my arts and crafts. Plus it won't eat the foam and the more coats you give the stronger it gets. Any arts supply or craft shop should have it. Couldn't find your flight video but I'm sure it flies well. Try that stuff out and happy flying,N8knox
Its perfectly clear and a great video on how to build this nice airplane,he has taken the trouble to show you how to build it so stop whinging ! nicely built and some clever tips for other models too, cannot find any flight video ?
I just got everything I could need motor, battery(lipo)/ charger(lipo) esc(30A), 3 servos, radio/ receiver, and hardware. All less than 250$. It has gotten much more affordable. then 10$ for foam. It is indeed priceless in the end
If you use rubber bands for wing hold downs you won't tear your fuselage up on a cartwheel type landing. (for beginners). I use #64's bought in office supply store with two 1/4" dowels through the fuselage epoxied in, one near leading edge and one just under trailing edge. Screw down looks neater if you have perfected your landings. Great build!
Pretty large wings! Very interesting. I might do this to design my passenger plane, an all-new concept with a split v fuselage and delta wings and diagonal vertical stabilizers! (It probably won't work, though...
Wood glue like Gorilla from Walmart or Titebond 3 from Home Depot / Lowes is waterproof and PVA water based just like Elmers white. It waterproofs paper and kills 2 birds with 1 stone. So no need for heavy paint for water resistance. Maybe just wing marker patterns for distance orientation.
Sanding, melting etc with that foam in the house is dangerous to breath that in. You can't exhale it. You need to do that outside. Edit:. Also of you skip all the steps you did, it's no longer a How To Make video.... It shows you know how to make one. A lot of us have never built a plane yet, that's why we landed here.
Cool -Super Job! For those whinning about the tools you can buy a cheapo woodcarving set for 2 dollars , a good Exacto is less than 20.00. You can make a resitance wire cuter for next to nothing. I would also like some more instructions on how to make it fly , R/C electronics etc.
Very nice! I just watched the build video and had to come find the video of it flying. I'm very impressed by the job you did on it and how great the finished product looks. Excellent!
Thank you for knowledge... You have just enlighten my mind and also saved me hundreds of dollars...wow!! with your technique... The possibilities are endless....better than what's I was looking for
Awesome! At college we work with the blue foam to make models for projects. A nice trick for example to make sure the wing (or any shape) has the same shape over the entire wing is to take a small left over piece of cardboard or wood and cut the side profile of the wing in it. Now you can place this template over the wing and check how much you will need to sand in different areas to make it the same over the entire wing. Not really saying yours isnt or anything, just thought it was a nice trick
If you made it for such price, I wonder how do they sell us for like 200$ and for nothing amazing at all. Then they probably just put some foam in a mould and comes the airplane all together that probably just needs a little of sanding and that's all (since we still have to glue at home). ps: Very nice work
Wow thats just fantastic job.Anyone can try and make a copy for less than a couple of beers and if they muck up no problem. Good idea to reduce in size just to make static model using your idea Really impressed. Thanks for taking the time to shoot the video . guess there is at least 146 people who are just jealous of your talent . Cheers Paul.
Chris Wilds The Video I was watching that led me to this one was some guy putting an old 7200 RPM HDD motor into one of these. It was better than the standard motor that came with his from a hobby shop, and it was free! So you could do this all parts for $10 or under, just looks like it's a lengthy process.
Workin Alday People used to do that with old CD Rom motors before RC electrics were widely available. The difficulty is matching the battery and speed controller to the motor's specs.
I talking about cutting a small 1/2 by 1" strips from the 2 liter plastic bottles for hinges. Back in the day I made a ton of those big foam planes you can buy at Walmart for 5 bucks RC. Back then I could convert one over to RC in less than ten minutes. If I tore off a wing just replace it or stuff 1/4 dial rods and tape and toothpicks to fix. Those planes I made don't compare to the looks of what you have. Great video
Love the attention to detail on this build! If you wanted to make a faster build time, you can leave the stepped wings. A KF airfoil works very well for lift.
Change the name of the video to "Look what I can do" cause there is nothing informational at all about this video. How bout a list of materials and steps for completion?
Good build man. But now in 2015 you can use dollar tree foam it cost less and is lighter than the blue foam. And takes a lot less time to build. You did a awesome job with the blue foam.
Harlan H. mote But his foam wing is solid, dense, and strong as hell. Foamboard from dollar tree isnt as stiff or strong. Maybe a hot wire cutting with MDF or hardboard aileron templates could improve the build process.
The plane's fuselage is made and sanded magnificienty. I main wing look flat and a bit of diehedral would have given it more scale looks. Overall a very good job !
That's a pitty, you made such a great video, writing a list of the 4 or 5 components you used to build this plane would be just perfect for anybody looking to build theyr first RC plane, specialy for people on a low budget. I'm far from wanting to criticise you, this is just a GREAT video, it got me thinking that my dream of having and RC plane is still posible. Thanks so much for posting it.
First I will say this: I really enjoyed this video. Some super great advise and I will be using some of these features on my next build. Next I will say this: NOT INCLUDING THE ELECTRONICS.. This plane is NOT a $10 plane. Carbon fiber rods, dowell rods, glue, paper, foam, wires for push pull rods, wheels. Not including the $80 worth of electronics, this plane would cost much more than $10 to build.
Excellent video. May I add a suggestion: A good way to get rid of the rough surface left by cutting and sanding is to lay a piece of good quality wax paper over the rough surface, then use a hot-iron at about 140 degrees F without a sock and smooth out the foam surface through the wax paper. The wax will not harm the iron and it's not hot enough to ignite it. Works TERRIFIC.
we use the glue water mixture in theatre to size the flats. use muslin instead of the paper. it will be indestructible. the muslin shrinks for a very tight fit. you can get it at walmart. less than a dollar a yard.
Right in front of the papers you will find white glue for about $2. You probably will spend a little bit more than $30 buying all these stuff ( just for the ar) + your electrical parts ( servos, motor, battery, radio control, control speed, receiver, etc). Of course if you are already into the hobby, you probably will have some of these parts. . I am taking some ideas from this guy to build my own FA/18 70mm with a duct fan which is going to be inside the fuselage.
Gosh... didn't see that before... was that Mrs. "When are you going to clear out of my kitchen"? I hate when that happens... Very instructional video! Thanks!
next time please make complete video and split into parts please.. Too good.. Waiting for more.. Only question is how are we sure if the model is aerodynamic in shape and well balanced while creating?
I really like what you did with the plane! it looks really good, but if I were you, i maybe would have cut some copper wire and put them in the foam before and after the opening to the components to strap some elastics instead of screws, because if it breaks, it can be fixed a little easier but really good plane!
Very true, but some airframes can cost $1-300 or more, and those are the parts that you're most likely to wreck in a crash. Unless you are being really crazy you probably won't harm any electronics in a crash. Expect props to break on a pusher, though. With this fellow's method, you can recover from a lot of "learning experiences" really cheap.
The styrofoam costs $10.50 at lowes> it is 4x8' 1/2 width. I did check prices last week. You also will need a bag or maybe two of DU-BRO NYLON HINGES, if you type that on ebay, you will find them. they cost about $4 each bag. I believe they come 6 hinges per bag. 3M SUPER 77 SPRAY ADHESIVE , it costs about $12 at lowes. The paper he mentioned to cover the plane cost about $3 at lowes also. You can find them by the tapes and paints section.
Great little video and exactly what RUclips should be! Ignore your detractors! Love the woman making what look like Rice Crispy Treats in the background!
Hi its June 7th 2016 just come across your video think its great ,i build with foam and broom sticks etc.its apity that you did not show the complete build from foam sheet cutting out all parts and showing build bit by bit perhaps you may do this at some stage (or maybe you have already done this it would be realy interesting for would -be builders on a budjet) as said great job ill look out for your future builds , regards Terry. UK,
Super job. I built a $ 2 plane from dollar store stock poster board. Still flying and love it just because I did it myself. Yes it cost $ 10.00 to build the plane. , have either a crashed project or spares that you use to build a new one. Can't bill me for the new parts ( I explain to my wife) so the plane costs me the materials to build it. Of course figure in the hours and it is prohibitive. How much does it cost to wax your car if you already have the car and the wax.
loving the way this thing looks and the price above all else. just wondering if you or the peanut gallery knows where to find plans for something like this. and please foamies that are flat ?
OMG The man is simply showing that you can build An airplane for RC for very little money. He is giving a lot of potential RC pilots hope that you can get into the RC hobby for very little money. And I for one am glad he did. Thank You.

Hey man😍😍 Your video is my nostalgia, I watched exactly 10 years ago then now✨

i think he means 11 bucks for the frame no electronics
Ya it cost $10 for a cheap servo from China and the motor looks like $20 or more... Maybe he should say "under $50" hobby grade style...
+Pretzil295 yeah what about the battery, the speed control, reciver and controller? haha thats around 80$ just in that
+david mimms yes the frame is the airplane
mmk
+david mimms yep, but theres no way he would have got 2 million views calling it "how to build a plane for under $60" I can build a dollar tree foam plane this size for $3 no electronics.
I don't care how much the plane cost...just the work you put into it is amazing...well done!
I lost track when the fresh homemade donuts showed up.
Right? Lol 😂🙌🏻🍩🍩🍩🍩
Great job. I was looking for ideas about the motor mounts on foam....really great video. I have been using painters paper over glue. I’m going to use the method you discussed. This vid has many good ideas that I’m going to incorporate. Thanks again.

could you provide some dimensions?
Very nice. The plane looks as good as many retail models.
Great vid! But forget the plane, I want a homemade donut! Wow, lucky man.
Even better, a flying donut.
I love cheap fun DIY projects! Very nice workmanship man! I am going to try this myself.
Will it be possible for your to share the structure blueprints of the plane?
I've been thinking of building a plane out of inilating foam for a long time now, that's a great plane you got there and thanks for the fantastic tips
Pretty large wings! Very interesting. I might do this to design my passenger plane, an all-new concept with a split v fuselage and delta wings and diagonal vertical stabilizers! (It probably won't work, though...
good luck..i support you
Thecrazeecow good luck
yeah nice low wing loading for slow stall speeds.
Mounting my wings, I have had good luck with just pegs and rubber bands. Yours is a little more elegant.
+Anton Nym did you finish it? is it easy as it seems to be?
Very nice home built plane. Clever way to secure the wings too. Looks nice and sturdy. Well done mate.
I hope by now you have a 3D printer so you can make custom cowling, wheel pants and so forth!
Pro tip : you can watch movies on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Johnathan Kaison Yup, I've been watching on flixzone for years myself :)
Thanks for posting this. I won't be building one from scratch, but you gave me some great ideas for repairing my current plane.
wait a minute, my ADD just kicked in, but is that someone cooking fresh doughnuts in the background at around 6:30 ?
lawl
I crave doughnuts now lol

They are filming 2 vids at a time :D Cooking doughnuts while making a plane and making a plane while cooking doughnuts
good job man. The idea about the sheets of foam is great. I can think of so many projects that I can apply that too. Thanks.
donuts........oooh... great vid by the way

I want some donuts now.
Cool vid, but what's even cooler is those home-made doughnuts! Dang dude, you have the best of both worlds!!
You may have built the ACTUAL plane for $10 but all the other things cost extra...Like the MOTOR?

How is it under ten with motors and servos and things
Dalkson good question... THExxxTINMAN... care to enlighten us?
Caleb Teague its 10 dollars to build the body the foam glue paper with electronics it will be more expensive.
Are you really that stupid?
You stupid?
Love the attention to detail on this build! If you wanted to make a faster build time, you can leave the stepped wings. A KF airfoil works very well for lift.

your motor is $25
This is awesome. I have no clue how you came up with this process but the plane looks really good.
One of the coolest videos I've ever seen on this subject. Thanks!
The plane's fuselage is made and sanded magnificienty. I main wing look flat and a bit of diehedral would have given it more scale looks. Overall a very good job !
That is a great looking model. Excellent job. Thanks for the inspiration
Not bad at all. It even gives me an idea. I was thinking about making an RC airboat. I may be able to adapt your techniques to build it.
Pretty sweet DIY man. Nice looking plane
That's a pitty, you made such a great video, writing a list of the 4 or 5 components you used to build this plane would be just perfect for anybody looking to build theyr first RC plane, specialy for people on a low budget. Great vid that is a very nice plane. No one has that kind of skill except u I bet without your vid my plane was a mess
Very good engineering I like this!! very inspiring !!
I really like your motor mount design.
This is awesome! Great job on the details and explanation and use of materials.
Fantastic video! Very well spoken, and totally understandable to an flying newb like me.
Works TERRIFIC.
well i have to admit mate i am genuinely amazed! that is some ace work brother, pat yourself on the back.
The 'thing' for the flaps is called a servomotor and for the remote control it is just a receiver on the same frequency as your remote :)
we use the glue water mixture in theatre to size the flats. use muslin instead of the paper. it will be indestructible. the muslin shrinks for a very tight fit. you can get it at walmart. less than a dollar a yard.

Nice job, now I have a project lol. I have two other foamies that I LOVE! can't wait to do this.
awesome ,and affordable too
Great job. You know me and every body else on youtube are going to have to try this. Too cool.

I notice those too they look good
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm thinking of using this for my 13 yr old scout's project. Thanks....

thanks for the video iv been wanting to build a little plane like that for a wile now but could not find out what to use....
THExxxTINMAN,
What glue did you use to laminate the fuselage? Great video. Nice looking plane. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
