I love all the small details that add to the intense emotions such as shortly before the clip starts Filo is hugging Naofumis side while crying because of (what i asume is) her seeing Raphtalia by the bones and senseing the how sad it makes Raphtalia
XD No joke, I really want Naofumi and company to go back to those business days of old. They made more good that way then all the other "Heroes" seeking glory. But I guess the "game of thrones" means that will not happen until Myne, Aultcray and the Church... *are repaid their debts.* 🗡
The character development of this anime is so good it's crazy. Deals with real issues at points and the stigma that follows them. It tones down the glory of being a "hero" in a video game because every action is shown to have consequence - which Naofumi, Rapthalia and Filo has to clean up (later on with Melty as well). Rapthalia is such a sweet girl, yet strong. She has the femininity of a woman, while still being a strong person. Nearly every other anime, game and movie make the big mistake of sacrificing femininity in favor of strength.. or exaggerates both to make for an unbalanced character.
This was far and away more comprehensive than anything I expected to find in the comments and my day is better for it, thank you and bravo. It's not saying much considering how little anime I've watched, but I don't believe I have ever seen character development handled so realistically, so well.
Episode 4: Raphtalia saves Naofumi from his despair. Episode 15: Naofumi does the same for her. Both episodes with the same music and the same vibe. Also with this episode the flag in the meal Naofumi bought for her makes it even stronger, he really gave her a much stronger push up and hope than he ever could imagine with that little action. Beautiful episode, one of my favourites.
This was an important bit of development for Naofumi too. In episode 12, he thinks to himself about how he loves travelling, which is the first time in the series he said he liked something. And this is the first time he openly tells Raphtalia how much what she did means to him and how he would be lost without her. It just shows that he's slowly but surely changing for the better. And people say he has a one-track mind. Ridiculous.
Speaking as someone who isn't always the best when it comes to emotional scenes, I NEED to give it up for Shield Hero. This entire episode hit me in feels from beginning to end and I couldn't turn away from it once. Raph and Naofumi's relationship is one of the purest I've ever seen in anime and it just warms/eases my heart knowing that these two have each other to lean on whenever they need to.
I believe this scene makes a great counterpart to the one where Raphtalia herself supports Naofumi (as seen at 0:26). Interesting to see how both of them have just switched roles. This might be the reason I personally enjoyed episode 4 and 15 the most.
If you see the scene of Raphtalia comforting Naofumi after the rigged duel in the LN, it's actually a pretty good/subtle role reversal of when they first met (the anime sorta captures this, but it focuses more on Naofumi's despair and rage while the LN played up his paranoia and loneliness). Raphtalia looked at Naofumi and his anger-filled eyes and was convinced that he would be what finally ended her life only to be blown away by him giving a crap about her and actually saving and giving new purpose to her life instead. - Skip to episode 4 where Naofumi and his sanity are hanging by a thread because he keeps getting screwed, beaten down, and gas lit at every turn. When Raphtalia goes to comfort him, she almost has to wrestle him just to get him to hear her because the dude is 100% convinced that she only wants to hurt him like everyone else. - Don't get me wrong. I think the scene is just about perfect in either medium and you walk away feeling the weight it carries no matter what. The LN really captures the fragile state Naofumi is in and you feel it because you see events through his eyes. The anime communicates much the same, but gives added weight to Raphtalia defending him by removing the filter of watching it through Naofumi's eyes and REALLY getting across how pissed she is at Spear and Whore
She believed in him at episode 4 and now he is cheering up her like she had for him back then. This is so beautiful. I love the development of their relationship 😍
i'm so glad they did this episode ( since it was pretty much explained in the first volume of the light novel) all that we missed was a flash back of when naofumi bought raphtalia the kid's meal for the first time and that she saw the little flag, that flag gave her hope again. Best girl raphtalia

She sang kinda low, the music is lower than the other sounds and they talk over it, so it was hard to exactly hear what she said. Raph and Noell are pretty good (even if I do get annoyed with the Tsundere bit the latter puts on all the time). they both had it rough in life and know what it's like not to have anyone to care about/watch out for them. It makes it all the more meaningful when they meet just one person (like Raph) or even a whole group (like Noell) who have their back and how they just can't begin to express how much that means to them.

det porlar än / det pårlar regn (Not 100% sure which it is, first one makes most sense though)
water trickles / it pours rain
under din bro
under your bridge
och jag kan höra
and I can hear
hur syrsan spelar
how the crickets play

the dampness of the night

window glass
luften klar och ren
the air is clear and clean
och där var vi
and there were we
Ett annat liv
Another life
en bortglömd stad
a forgotten city
som ingen minns
that no one remembers
nu utan jag
except for me
i rött och guld
in red and gold
står lönnens blad och vindarna tar tag
the maple leaves stands and the winds takes a hold of
i varje träd
(in) every tree
finns sången kvar
does the song remain
och jag kan känna
and I can feel
hur skogen gråter
how the forest cries
Morgonljus strilar ner
Morning light softly shines
genom tårarna
through the tears
och här står vi
and here we stand
Tunga steg
Heavy steps
blev till luft
turned into air
en hand grep tag i min
a hand grabbed mine
och där var du
and there were you
nära allt mörkt i min kropp
close to all the darkness in my body
blev silverljus
turned into silver light
